A question on Dungy and Super Bowls

OK Colts Fans.  Here is a question.  We won one Super Bowl in the Dungy era (7 years).  Some fans believe we should have won more, some believe that is average.  So, here is my question.  Would you give up that one Super Bowl win for an opportunity to win more.  If you give up that win and don't win 2, you will end up with zero.  Or you can stay where we are with the one win.

Fortunately, this is only a hypothetical situation.  I will take the 1 Super Bowl, which is more than we had when he came here.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

The whole one Super bowl thing

is crap. Total crap. If anyone is bitching and moaning about only winning one Super Bowl, they just need to remove their head from their ass. Winning just one is a colossal feat these days. The only team to win more than one recently had to cheat to do so.

Yeah, there’s many many fans around the NFL that would ecstatic with one superbowl win. I’m one.

you have such a retarded way of saying things.

Let me list some things that this team has apparently had according to this very blog:

The greatest QB in the game today and perhaps of all time , a defense that has finished in the top 10 on more thann one occasion, and has been on of the better in the league, and one of the best head coaches of all time.

If you just leave it at that and don’t factor in that based on pay the Colts feel: They have the best TE in the game, some of the best WRs in the game, one of the best safeties in the game, and the best pass rushing DE in the game, is it really unreasonable or loopy, or even crap to think that this team should have, at some point in time, had a little better success in the playoffs? Not necessarily super bowl wins, but better success against wild card teams?

You’re turning a blindeye to half the equation and just doing a completely imbalanced look at reality.

To answer the original question: Hell no, not the way you phrased it. Give up the one to have a chance to win more? They have a chance to win another one every year. Now if you said, ‘would you give up 2006 if you were guaranteed to be in the super bowl 3 more times before Manning retires?’ then i would say yes, because the Colts, other than this year (and that was unusual circumstances) generally own the NFC. Its getting through the AFC that has been the problem.

to further my point

Why do Colts fans keep comparing the Colts to Detroit? Is that your expectation level? You’re witnessing something special with Manning, once in a lifetime sort of things. You should have higher hopes and dreams. Leave the wishes of a one win season for Lions fans.

This is sports we’re talking about. Hope, dreams, fantasies, why aren’t you out there hoping, wishing, comparing your team to the greatest of all time? Are you happy that your team has one more Super Bowl than the worst team in the history of the world, or would you rather have your team reach for the stars in this once in a lifetime circumstance and try to be mentioned as the greatest.

I’m a buckeyes fan – I don’t expect championships every year. Heck, I would just like them to beat out of conference opponents at this point. But in college, the turnover is way too great to have something consistent.

I’m a Cubs fan – I’d give my left testi (the right one got lost in a freak snow cone accident) to have one world series win. When you’re a constant loser, one year of greatness is all you ask.

I’m a Penguins fan – The team was on the verge of sale and moving to southern ontario, last years run was almost enough to quench my thirst. But with the best young players in the game, I would expect one championship before its all said and done. Thats how hockey works, imo, though, an individual should and can take over games if he has to.

I’m a Bulls fan – Hey, I was 10 when Jordan started doing great things, I was impressionable. But I’ve stuck with them through the shit storms, too. Now I just want them to make the playoffs. (Playoffs?)

I think I’ve covered all the sports. Whats my point? I’m not a front runner. I don’t just cheer teams that win all the time. I love my teams. The Colts are unique – They have hall of famers on their roster, they HAVE GREATNESS. I don’t expect from the Colts what I would from the Cubs or the the Bulls or some other team that has done nothing but be mediocre for a long time. From Greatness I expect Greatness. Do you think Manning goes home at the end of a non-super bowl season and goes, ‘atleast I’m not the LIons?’ Hell freakin no. He wants more, and so do I. I’ll want it all until Manning retires, at which point I’ll be happy to be there.

I'm a Cal fan

I look at winning with skepticism and disbelief, like: “We’re ahead 100-14 with 3 minutes left… we might just pull it out!”

And I’m scared that my basketball team is in the Top 25 right now… pretty sure that dooms us to failure.

So when I see our Colts continually on the brink I really really really want to see them earn another ring.

P.S. Is the general feeling that it wasn’t “our” Colts who won SB V, or do people agree that this is the same team, just a different location? Because there have been a lot of mentions of only having one ring, when in fact the Colts have 2.

P.P.S. Thanks for the visual with that snow cone comment – will be a long time before I can get that one out of my mind.

Eh

Irsay took the entire team, staff, and everything associated with Baltimore. They only left a stadium and locker rooms. The Indianapolis Colts are the exact same thing as what the Titans would be if they were called the Tennessee Oilers. I do realize that’d be a dumb name though. And if you’re an original Baltimore Colts fan, I’m not intending to offend you, but if a city came and told me they were taking my team, I’d do the exact same thing.

I agree 100 %

I too think it’s okay to expect bigger things, before Manning retires. This is why we are “chokers” and teams like titans isn’t. This is also the reason LT and the Chargers might be labeled chokers in a future not too far away.

Answer

Only if I know what I do now so I can

Send a tip about spygate years early.
Convince Nick Harper to stay at a hotel the night before the 2005 wildcard game.
Kidnap Gilbert Gardner before the 2006 season.
Bubble wrap the DL in mid to late 2007.
Send some bad seafood to Scifres the night before the 08 wildcard game.

big risk in doing that

Polian would probably faint at the site of such a thing and could possibly hit his head and we would lose the GM. Maybe we should just send him Simon’s stats as a Colt

Pretty sure we still have the opportunity to win more,

just remember what Dungy always said, “Next man up.”

We can still win Super Bowls

Elway didn’t win any Super Bowls till the last 2 years of his career. We can still win several more with Manning. But we are not going to win 2 until we win 1. We have indeed won 1, and I will take that as a starting point.

The thing I don’t understand is how this reputation with Dungy has carried forward even AFTER he won a Super Bowl. It is very hard to create a winning culture in any organization and Dungy has taken 2 teams in the league from nowhere to Super Bowl Champs (yes, he did have a hand in Tampa winning a Super Bowl). Remember, we had the best record in the league only once, so by that stat we should only have one 1 Super Bowl. It is great to have lofty expectations, but those expectations should be tempered by perspective. You don’t make wholesale changes when you are one step from the top. Maybe, the system needs tweaked, but it doesn’t needed to be torn apart and started from scratch like some people are suggesting.

We should have won more

But the playoffs are the playoffs for a reason. Crazy stuff happens all the time. Am I dissapointed? Sure, but am I pissed? No. It’s not Peyton’s fault about tipped passes last year, it’s not his fault what happened this year, and it’s not his fault we couldn’t stop Jerome Bettis and short yardage in Pittsburgh in 05. And last I checked, Manning’s not Vanderjagt and didn’t shank a kick after being the highest paid kicker, biggest smack talker on the entire team, and went out with dyed hair and diamond earrings.

But being pissed off means that our best years are behind us when in fact I think we’ve just now reached the summer of our team. Pre 2005 our defense, to put it nicely, blew monkey balls. (Sorry monkey lovers, but I just can’t think of a better way to put this). So in 2005 we had the best record, almost came back in an epic way and still could’ve gone to OT. 2006 we won it. 2007 tipped passes killed us and we missed a FG and yes, we outplayed them and should’ve won but we didn’t. And this year, injuries, decline of our best receiver, and everything else that went into the game we just lost it.

I’m leaving work so I’ll elaborate later. You get this gist, I’ll sum it up. There might be more talk about monkeys though, be warned.

In 2007 Kenton Keith, no pass rush, and a still injured rusty Marvin cost the Colts the game.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

I still don't get how Keith was so awful catching the ball

I remember them saying it was his receiving skills that got him noticed by the Colts Canadian scout.

A question that has puzzled mankind for ages.

even more confusing

when you listen to how the CFL people talk about him like he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, and, if you can believe it, the CFL probably relies on the back catching more passes than the NFL.
