Fun Game: Pick the new coach

So, Caldwell is our new coach, and we're all going to support him 'cuz he has the respect of Irsay, Polian, Dungy, Manning & Co. However, there are a lot of good coaches out there this year and the Colts would have been one of the most desirable teams for a coach that wanted to win. Shannahan, Spagnuolo, Rex Ryan, Mularkay, and some I'm probably forgetting. If we weren't going to keep this all in the family, who would you have been most psyched about the Colts hiring?

Spagnuolo

Perhaps he could keep the offense intact while bettering the defense. The Giants run a 4-3 and lost Strahan and Osi (not even trying to spell his last name) and still did pretty good this season. Imagine him getting Freeney and Mathis to work with, along with Brock, Howard, etc.

Spangnuolo was my choice too

at first I thought Shannahan, but we really need some work on our defense and Denver’s D was a mess.

Note: I should have included Cowher, Billick, and Holmgren.

I originally liked Spagnuolo, too

But wonder if that would be the best thing for our D. Would he be able to coach a T2 (i.e., are the fundamentals truly just fundamentals)? Would it matter?

I feel like we might benefit more from Cowher or Ryan, who come from traditional running teams… seems that we have the pass thing down, but need to boost both sides of the run game (without tipping the scales away from pass if that makes sense).

Spagnuolo is overrated in my opinion.

Rex Ryan is completely full of himself.

Shanahan would be a good choice but he doesn’t know jack about defense so even though he wouldn’t be directly impacting the defense as a head coach, he still has no idea how to pick a good defensive coordinator.

I don’t know anything about Mularkey.

I don’t think Leslie Frazier has done enough to deserve a head coaching position just yet.

I’m not really that fond of Bill Cowher either. His philosophies are the complete opposite of what the Colts are built around.

And since I’m tired of trying to think of anyone else, my choice if Brian Billick. I can’t believe this guy is still on the market. He has such a great offensive mind, and not to mention his roots lead back to one of the guys who mentored Dungy, that being Dennis Green. He’s easily the best coaching candidate out there, and I can’t help but laugh when I see people like Mangina and that McDaniels guy getting felated left and right. Oh well.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Frazier is a Dungy guy

For me, that’s enough. I can’t wait for second branches to come from Dungy trees. Too bad Ron Rivera didn’t get a head coaching job when he was with the Bears. Ah well.

Dungy guy or not, he thinks he’s smart enough to have Peyton Manning’s calls “figured out.” Which is utterly ridiculous in itself.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Nolan

Nolan’s head is filled with so much football knowledge it’s insane. And he’s a class act. He got screwed over pretty good in SF. They had some players, Vernon Davis, who essentially castrated him and he lost the respect of the team because of it. He was done wrong, but I’d love him as a coach. Nice guys don’t succeed everywhere, but Indy is the place for them to blossom.

Or Billick, he’s awesome. And a fiery leader that still respects his team.

Or maybe even…drum roll, come on, someone do it, HARBAUGH! That’d be amazing. If he was at the same level as his brother, woo, think about THAT. I mean if Peyton gets the wind knocked out of him, he’s still got enough in the tank to sub in for a few plays too and pull out some old school Cinderella stuff.

Billick

It would be interesting to see the Colts w/Billick at the helm. I remember reading somewhere that he and Dungy were friends and always joked with each other about how they ended up coaching teams that were great on the opposite side of the ball as was their specialty. Billick’s an offense guy but he wound up with the Ravens D, and Dungy’s a defense guy but he gets Manning and Co.

And I like his style

He’s smart, well spoken, and treats his players well from what I’ve heard. (I’m sure someone will say he doesn’t, but whatever) But he also has fire on the sidelines, but not in an obnoxious Jon Gruden/Coughlin way. Anyone else roll their eyes when they pan to those guys after something goes against their team? They almost seem like they’re acting. It’s so overplayed it’s stupid.

Besides, I like his Coors Light Ditka commercials.

Oh

And he’d probably know who to pick for a ST coach.

by monstersbox on Jan 15, 2009 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

My pick would never happen, even if he wanted to coach this year. I’d like Bill Cowher. I think he’s just enough of Dungy to keep things working and just enough anti-dungy to give certain areas a wake up call. Plus, I think he’d be smart enough to realize what he has in Peyton that he wouldn’t try to change the whole team until Manning retired.

All that said, bringing in Cowher would mean Polian leaving and I would never be willing to part with both Dungy and Polian for one man who had the same amount of Super Bowl success in twice the time that those man had here in Indy (although Cowher would have the best QB he’s ever had…)

That's the thing

Cowher would want full control. No thank you. Polian’s fine as is.
