QB Coaching spot filled
From NFL.com
"Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Frank Reich, who spent last season as an offensive team assistant, will be elevated to quarterbacks coach. Caldwell is still meeting with other staff members before debating whether to make additional moves."
Anyone know anything about Frank Reich? Also does Peyton really need a position coach. Yes Jim Sorgi needs one but isn't that Peytons job haha.
Lets hope he does the best job he can do with #18 and lil Jim.

It's ok, no one pays attention to those anyways.
This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

The only thing I know about Reich
was that he was the quarterback who led the bills to the greatest comeback in playoff history… where they were down like 30 points to the Oilers, but came back and managed to win in OT.

So did he play in those 4 SBs they lost in a row?

If he did
Then hell yeah I’d say he was awesome. You make 4 SBs and I respect you as much or more than someone that went once and won. Jim Kelly > Trent Dilfer/Brad Johnson.

Next person
Who questions my man crush on Manning gets a karate chop to the neck.
Exceptions to the rule. And by the way, Norwood makes that field goal and Kelly is considered completely different. Vanderjagt makes ours and Peyton wins two.
And I consider McNabb to be at least on the level with Brady. Personal opinion, but you’re not going to argue me out of that one.
And no, Brady is not on the level with Manning if that’s going to come up. Remember, I have my karate chop hand ready.

i wish someone would do a study
on Peyton Mannings weapons YAC and Tom Brady’s weapons YAC. I went through it one time, just cursory, and I think since Tom Brady became the starting QB he’s had atleast one player in the top ten in the league in YAC…

Advanced NFL Stats does this
with “Air Yards” They rate QBs after fully subtracting their YAC after he found that the relationship between a receiver and his YAC year to year was way way way stronger than a QB and his YAC.

has he done it for years past?
I’m really interested in it as it pertains to Manning and Brady, as my eyes have always said that Brady has a lot of 2 yard passes that go for about 400 YAC.

I did something on it awhile ago
I did the YAC for Brady and Manning and compared them to a few people. The only number I can remember off the top of my head was that the Patriots led the league this year and last in YAC. Brady had something in the neighborhood of 42 or 44% of his yards coming from YAC. I know Welker was like 2 in YAC and both Faulk and Moss were up there. I don’t remember the math and I don’t feel like looking crap up right now, but if you discount YAC, Brady’s passing numbers were right around 2700-2800 yards (42% of 4800 or whatever). The year before that it was something like 1800 (he was at 49% of 3529) and in 2005 it was 45% of 4110 giving him around 2250. I had the exact same numbers but I don’t use exact numbers unless I can say they’re 100% correct. But those numbers are in the range of what I had.
Funny thing was, I stumbled on it when I was calling someone an idiot for saying Cassel deserved the MVP as much as Peyton. I found some other interesting things, but I don’t remember what I did with the links. Peyton’s 2004 season was considered better than Brady’s 2007.
And if you’re looking for something to read about the rivalry, this is an excellent writeup from about two weeks ago:

Havent read the article yet, will tonight, but re: Manning 2004 v Brady 2007, it seems like the media constantly and conveniently forgets a couple of things:
1) Manning set the single season passer rating record (120+) that season, Brady didn’t in 2007.
2) Brady in 2007 had about 100 more attempts (or, what 3+ games?) than Manning did in 2004. If Manning, in 2004, plays every snap of every game, he does what, 60? Brady played every snap of every game and was able to muster 50.
Mannings season was clearly better, but because ESPN is always in such a hurry to orally pleasure all things boston, we had to be told about how it was the greatest season ever! Stated as fact, not even questioned once.

no just Boston, they love to fellate all things recent
see 2006 USC being anointed the greatest team in college football history* before they played Texas for the National Title
*Literally, they had analysts break down the matchups between USC and 20ish of the great college football teams of history and gave USC the win every time

Their love for $C
has always reminded of their love for anything Boston. It is unbelievable. I mean…they say that $C has the best defense in college…but who have they played?
UCLA – not impressed
Oregon – not impressed
Stanford – Still not impressed
Cal – impressed a tad
Arizona – not impressed
ASU – nope, not yet
Washington St. – definitely not impressed
Washington – sorry, no
Oregon St. – VERY impressed….with Oregon St. that is
Ohio – slightly impressed, although Beanie Wells didn’t play
Notre Dame – no offense guys, but this one didn’t do it for me. (I do root for ND too by the way)
Penn St. – this is the only one that impressed me beyond “meh”
So, somebody please explain to me how they can be measured “the best”? I mean OU, Texas, Florida State, Texas Tech…those teams faced top 10 opponents practically every week.

If you watched the Cal-$c game
then Cal is more impressive than what you saw. A TD was taken off the board for what was initially a non-call but the whiner Carroll was all over the refs to flag us for illegal formation. I believe Cal had the momentum until that point, but then things really turned when $c was awarded a phantom TD.
Anyway, I’m obviously extremely biased and annoyed that Coach Tedford has YET to win a game in Southern California (against either team). I believe that with Sanchez’s declaration and their losing Mauluga and other defensive players, Cal finally has a shot at beating them this year (plus it’s in our house).
And to address your final question, I actually would have liked to see them play Florida or OU or Texas in a bowl game… would have been nice to see their a$$es whooped so Pete Carroll should shut his trap.

I couldn't agree more.
I was saying the same thing about wanting to see them play OU, Texas or Florida. You know what’s funny? The end of the season rankings has them at #2…whatever.
I did see the Cal game and I do agree with you. My hopes were with Cal because I knew they legitmately had a chance to win.
Until UCLA can step-up, I am rooting for ANY team to beat them. It has been the same approach I use for New England. (My favorite teams are INDY and whoever is playing NE and now, I must include SD)

Well
He pretty much sat the last 3 games. So if you think about it, Manning did the majority of that in 13 games. That’s why there were 100 more passes. He easily could’ve kept going but knew everyone was going to say he was just trying to show up the record. People would’ve been pissed. If you notice towards the end, he was handing off alot, like, way more than he normally would at the goal line. I mean…he passed 42 times in the last game of the season and rushed it 20. You think in hindsight they’d be like “uh…maybe we shouldn’t have completely gave away our game plan to a team we might be seeing in the superbowl just so Brady can break Manning’s record. Nah, we won’t see them again.”
And then for some strange, unexplained reason…Funny how nobody mentions that. I think it’s funny.

Really bad transition
I totally went from talking about Manning to Brady without even mentioning him. Hah. Well whatever. You get the gist.

That's interesting.
I have always wondered if anyone kept record of “air yards”
This paragraph amused me:
Here are the QBs from 2007 who led the league in percent of their passing yardage as YAC: Croyle, Testaverde, Greise, Harrington, Favre, McCown, Losman, and Lemon. The 2006 list includes Brunell, Carr, Favre, (Rob) Johnson, and (Alex) Smith. There’s isn’t a single guy on that list who we can call a legitimate starter
The emphasis is mine. And yes, I am a “hater.”

PFR had a nice series on the worst players
Harrington ranked as the worst career QB of the sizable time period they used.
Obviously he isn’t the worst QB to play in the NFL, but they say in the end of the piece, Harrington was bad enough to seriously hurt his team, but just good enough to keep getting starting chances.

I don't think so,
Reich played in the Oilers game because Jim Kelly was injured… but I’m fairly sure that Kelly played at QB for most (if not all) of the Bills’ impressive 4 SB losses.

Ahh
I remember reading an article on him last year from the indystar.
He was a backup in indy behind kelly was he not?
I believe Polian has offered him an open invitation for a job before, he compared him to Jim Sorgi IIRC.

Few people know that Reich also held the largest college football comeback record for quite some time, Maryland over Miami (I think).
I didn’t realize that he wasn’t already the QB coach, but it’s cool that he got promoted officially. This is actually his third term under Polian – worked for him as a Bill, as a Panther, and now as a Colt.
