Super Bowl 43 will feature Pittsburgh and Arizona

Not all that jazzed about this Super Bowl, but whatever. Regardless, congrats to Blitzburgh, cgolden, and all the fans of the Steelers and Cardinals. The coach passed over after Bil Cowher's departure (Ken Whisenhunt) gets to face the Tony Dungy protege who did in fact replace Cowher (Mike Tomlin) in Tampa Bay.

Go Cards

since lovin blue is writing down all the reasons why she is rooting for the Cards, Ill list mine

1. Edgerrin James
2. They have been perennial losers
3. Dont want to see the Steelers be the first team to get 6 Superbowl titles.

Its win-win

If the Cards win, Edge gets a ring. If the Steelers win, a Dungy protege gets a ring. I would definitely be happier with Edge coming out on top though, don’t get me wrong.

GO CARDS!!!!

As much as the “Dungy-Tree” matters, Edgerrin is a Colt, and we have to support him. He was there for our team two years ago, Colts Nation needs to return the love!!! I bought a Colts Edge James jersey on ebay for $20 this afternoon. I’ll be wearing it during the Super Bowl. Go Red!!!!

gotta side with the steelers

i just don’t want a team that lost 48-20, 35-14 and 47-7 down the stretch, playing in the weakest division in football and coasting once they clinched the division to win the super bowl.
not to mention they could barely sell out their first home playoff game in 95873632834 years.

go steelers (unenthusiastic)

Sounds like you want an NFL BCS

Colts didn’t look so great down the stretch when we won the SB. The Cardinals would never have had a shot if we relied on a coaches poll and computer rankings to determine the Super Bowl. Cards won when it mattered.

After that blatant helmet-to-helmet hit on McGahee, I hope the Cards destroy them.

no definitely no BCS

i remember the jacksonville game no doubt. but the colts were still 12-4 in 2006.
i guess you’re right they definitely won when it mattered most. but they MAILED in that week 16 game vs. new england.

I gotta agree with you

If you coast like that, you don’t deserve to win the Super Bowl, plus another protege of Dungy’s makes it to the Super Bowl. Dungy-2, Belichick-0

Wow! Unfreaking believable!

Do the Ravens’ fans remember where that team was last year? 5-11. This year the Baltimore Ravens finished the regular season 11-5 and made it to the AFC Championship Game. They have to be some of the most ungrateful fans in the NFL. The Ravens aren’t known for their offense, so why are the fans pissed at Flacco? He’s a Rookie who had never played in the playoffs. There’s plenty of veteran QBs who have never made it to the conference title game let alone win 2 playoffs games to make it there (see Romo). They really need to shut up and be happy for the season their team had. Even though the Colts went one and done, I’m still very proud of them especially what they went through as a team.

by KMR24 on Jan 18, 2009 11:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep, their team has up and coming players

We have key players in their mid thirties. We are kind of going back into the regrowth stage.

I think the guy's a little loony, but you're right

They need to be happy for how far they got. And of course I have a special place in my heart for Kyle Boller (one of the most successful QBs at Cal), but he is definitely NOT the answer!

Go Cards for sure

It was tough watching that AFC CG knowing we beat both teams earlier this year.

Whatever it is, its brutal

I’m tired of watching other teams in the post season

by burc on Jan 18, 2009 11:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We always stall...........I dont know why

We could start with improving the run game. Draft some bad ass DT’s to stop those irritating 3rd down conversions. Improve our special teams by finding a true KR. And get a better medical staff to prevent stupid injuries like what happened to Marlin Jackson. If we do those four things then we would be unstoppable.

Injuries also point to

conditioning – anyone know how good our strength and conditioning program is?

Wistful thinking

Was wondering if only the Colts had taken care of business in SD, then we would be buying tickets to Tampa instead of watching the game on TV. Oh well go Steelers (atleast makes my other half happy)

by rangerover76 on Jan 19, 2009 12:08 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

It's possible

The two teams that played today were pretty brutal, but I agree that if we got by SD we’d have had a decent shot. (Much like 2005 when Pitt ran the table, I thought we’d have done so as well if Nick Harper just had not been stabbed by the missus the night before, if Tarik Glenn could remember the snap count, etc.). Water under the bridge both years.

Ben R was phenomenal today, making all sorts of throws from all sorts of under-pressure scrambles. And doing it well. Sheesh!

What does it say when you are pretty confident that 4 AFC playoff teams could beat the NFC champs 4 out of 5 times each?

Go Edge! I doubt you will get enough touches to make you or me happy, but kick ass with the chances yo get. I suspect Pitt will win, though.

Hey It was nice to see...

Edge get to the big game!! But it was also nice to see a team that stepped it up in the playoffs!! Criticize Warner all you want (BBS) but you are crazy. He is money. I remember a few weeks ago when all I was reading on this page was “Manning is MVP Warner sucks” Anyway, I stated who cares about the MVP…Manning would rather have another Super Bowl. Well, Warner didn’t get the MVP (deservedly so) but he is the one in the Super Bowl. Individual honors are for chumps!! Leading your team to the big game by raising you level of play is what champions are made of!! Enough said. I hope the Cardinals take it to the Steelers!!

GO CARDS….GO EDGE!!!!

LOL

Congrats on the Cards getting to the Super Bowl. Peyton Manning is leaps and bounds better than Kurt Warner, and if you somehow disagree with than I don’t know what level of idiocy that is, but it is pretty low. Kurt Warner got to the SB through the NFC, which is a chump conference. The Cards were blown out by an 11 win Pats team that didn’t make the playoffs. The Steelers will maul the Cards. If Peyton played in the NFC, he’d have been to 6 Super Bowls by now.

The Champs 5 0f the last 7 years have come from the AFC. Enjoy getting blown out.

Its obvious that Manning is having a better career than Warner but...

I hope you weren’t serious with half the things you just mentioned. I know the guy above called you out and really looked stupid doing it, but your comeback just now did not look good. I may be one of the few on this blog who thinkgs this but this is Warners third Super Bowl appearance (granted with really good players around him), but to downplay what he has done is probably not the best route to take in my opinion. I really do think the Cardinals have a shot and will not get blown out, mainly because I think their defense will contain the Steelers enough so that the Cards can score enough points.

You are not the only one!

How many games does Warner have to win to get some respect? IFirst, he couldn’t beat quality teams. Now 3 quality teams later and it is because he is in the crappy NFC. Arguments that include “if Manning played in the NFC…” are as stupid as it gets. It gets old hearing how Manning never has a team around him to help him win it all. Remember, when the Colts did win, Manning was anything but spectacular. And more often than not…he does poorly in the playoffs. This is not fiction…this is fact. I also take offense to you saying I looked stupid with my argument. Anyone who says that Warner is not money in the playoffs is an idiot. Take that how you will…when Manning gets to 3 superbowls talk to me. Manning=best regular season QB ever…but when playoff time comes around…not so much.

I am so sick of this argument.

I’m about to go postal.

“Manning doesn’t do well in the playoffs” It frickin’ amazes me that there are still people around here who think that the other 21 people who take the field for the Colts have absolutely nothing to do with the wins/losses.

Im not the only one what?

You took my context way out of proporiton. Sure I respect Warner, I don’t believe theres any reason for me to dislike him or downplay what he has done whether its against good opponents or not.. But again, this game we enjoy is a team sport and doesn’t come down to just one player, but Manning is having and will have a more successful career than Warner. He’s simply the better QB. To argue against that, well, is simply a “level of idocy” like BBS mentioned earlier. Im not going to say if this or if that, Manning would have more Super Bowl because it wouldnt mean anything to me. Warner has had a good career, inconsistent most of the time but great during others. Manning on the other hand, is having a Hall of Fame career and will be know as one of the all-time greats to play the game.

by ColtsFanNChiTown on Jan 19, 2009 10:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Let me clarify myself...

First and foremost I am as big a fan of the Colts as anyone…so lets get that out of the way. But I am getting a little tired of the way anyone who comes on here and even remotely critiques Manning in a critical way is treated!! I never said that Warner was a better QB than Manning…just that he has stepped up in the playoffs and taken his team to the Super Bowl. Something that is refreshing to see!! I will say the same thing about Big Ben in Pit!! It is funny how I read this board and all I hear is how Manning is the greatest QB to ever play the game. When his stats are great everyone is happy…heck we even make excuses when his records are broken (like when Brady beat the TD record…remember how we were convinced the Pats were running up the score?). But when Manning does not play well…its the team that let him down. Is this true? Sometimes…but we won the Superbowl with Manning only playing marginally well. Except for the Pats game his stats were not very good really. Thank you defense and running game. Heck Manning should not have been the MVP of that game!

Now Manning and this team was good enough to win the final 9 games of the season right? Manning played a great season of football and got us to the playoffs. But let me ask “what happened in the playoffs”? Nothing spectacular, and another first round loss. Not just Manning but the complete team played poorly. Heck, playoff losses would not bother me as much if we won a few and got eliminated in the second or championship round. But this is not what seems to happen. These are the facts and I’m sorry if my “idiocy” as some of you like to say, hurts. Maybe if I was from Indiana and was blessed enough to go to the great Notre Dame I would see the light.

Someone mentioned that they would look at 160 games as opposed to 10-15 games. I beg to differ…to get to those 10-15 games you must have done something in the regular season to get there right? The complete body of work is what counts.

And being sick of the argument makes me laugh Peytonsthebest!! Your screen name says you are not unbiased in your opinion.

I believe that Manning is statistically the best QB to ever play the game…I will not deny that!! Really there is nothing to deny!! But I stand by the fact that in the playoffs he does not raise his game like some other quarterbacks can do.

Sorry if I hurt anyones feelings!! BBS you are a hack…I am sick of your childish “your an idiot” comments to anyone who does not agree with your thoughts. I’m sure to get banned here but I am tired of this!!

Let me explain something to you.

I chose my screen name precisely because of this argument. I watch the games. I have come to this conclusion based on what I have seen Peyton do for the past 14 years. So, while it may appear that I’m biased – really I’m not.

Like Montana and Marino…who do you think is better? Is Montana better simply because his team won so many Superbowls?

Er...

A 90.4 QB rating, 310 yards and 0 INTs is pretty good any way you want to cut it. And a 60.4 QB rating with no touchdowns and an INT isn’t (Rivers numbers in that same game if you were wondering). And that’s including OT. Oh yeah, that insane Pittsburgh D? 308 yds, 105.4 rating, 3 TDs.

You’re right though, Peyton didn’t try to block the punts, and when that failed, run back to return them. So you’re right, he didn’t raise his level of play to where it needed to be to win that game. Maybe next time he’ll take a pipe to Winters’ knees before he comes out onto the field too.

Or maybe you were referring to the 97.7 402 yard 3 TD one with his 2 INTs coming off of tipped passes? Yeah, didn’t raise his level there either.

Oh wait, I’ll go back a little further because I’m sure there’s one recently. Ahh, how about the Steelers game from 2005? 90.9 1 TD, 0 INT 290 yards.

I’ll give you the Pats game from 04, 69.3 0 TD 1 INT, 238 yards. Funny though, his playoff rating was 107.4.

I’ll give you 2003 too, 35.5 237 yards, 1 TD 4 INT. Playoff rating 106.4.

Yes, Jets blew us out, made him look terrible. 31.2 rating

Dolphins 82.0 rating 0 INT.

Titans 62.3 rating, 0 INT.

But let me let you counter your point. Let’s see how Warner’s been “raising his game” as you say.

1999 – MIN – 143.0 5 TD 1 INT, 1 FUMB lost
            TB – 56.2 1 TD 3 INT, 1 FUMB
            TEN – 99.7 2 TD 0 INT, 1 FUMB
Overall – 100

2000 – NO – 83.9 3 TD 3 INT,1 FUMB lost

2001 – GB – 90.4 2 TD 1 INT
            PHI – 94.5 1 TD 0 INT,1 FUMB
            NE – 78.3 1 TD 2 INT,1 FUMB
Overall – 86.7

Let me help you out a bit, I’ll skew this towards your argument and only put in the SB Champion playoff records from recent years. This will negate the years they didn’t make it because I only want samples of players during their years they were able to “raise their game”.

Eli Manning – 2007
TB – 117.1, 2 TD, 0 INT, 1 SCK
DAL – 132.4, 2 TD, 0 INT, 3 SCK
GB – 72.0, 0 TD, 0 INT, 2 SCK
NE – 87.3, 2 TD, 1 INT, 3 SCK, 2 FUMB
Overall – 95.7

Ben Roethlisberger – 2005
CIN – 148.7, 3 TD, 0 INT, 1 SCK
IND – 95.3, 197 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 2 SCK
DEN – 124.9, 2 TD, 0 INT, 2 SCK
SEA – 22.6, 0 TD, 2 INT, 1 SCK
Overall – 101.7

Tom Brady – 2004
IND – 92.2, 1 TD, 0 INT, 3 SCK
PIT – 130.5, 2 TD, 0 INT, 2 SCK
PHI – 110.2, 2 TD, 0 INT, 2 SCK,1 FUM (1 lost)
Overall – 109.4

2003
TEN 73.3, 1 TD, 0 INT, 0 SCK
IND 76.1, 1 TD, 1 INT, 0 SCK
CAR 100.5, 3 TD, 1 INT, 0 SCK
Overall – 84.5

2001
OAK – 70.4, 0 TD, 1 INT, 2 SCK,1 FUMB
PIT – 84.3, 0 TD, 0 INT, 2 SCK
STL – 86.2, 1 TD, 0 INT, 1 SCK
Overall – 77.3

Brad Johnson – 2001
SF – 76.8, 2 TD, 1 INT, 1 SCK, 1 FUMB
PHI – 82.8, 1 TD, 1 INT, 0 SCK
OAK – 79.9, 2 TD, 1 INT, 0 SCK
Overall – 79.9

Trent Dilfer – 2000
DEN – 118.2, 1 TD, 0 INT, 130 yds, 2 SCK, 1 FUMB
TEN – 58.6, 0 TD, 0 INT, 117 yds, 3 SCK
OAK – 83.1, 1 TD, 1 INT, 190 yds, 2 SCK, 1 FUMB
NYG – 80.9, 1 TD, 0 INT, 153 yds, 3 SCK, 1 FUMB
Overall – 83.7

John Elway – 1998
MIA – 100.3, 1 TD, 0 INT, 182 yds, 1 SCK
NYJ – 65.0, 1 TD, 0 INT, 173 yds3 SCK, 1 FUMB (his rating is low because of a 38% completion)
ATL – 99.2, 1 TD, 1 INT, 336 yds, 0 SCK
Overall – 85.9

1997
JAC – 110.2, 1 TD, 0 INT, 223 yds, 3 SCK, 3 FUMB (2 lost)
KC – 83.2, 0 TD, 0 INT, 170 yds, 1 SCK, 1 FUMB (1 lost)
PIT – 86.8, 2 TD, 1 INT, 210 yds, 2 SCK
GB – 51.9, 0 TD, 1 INT, 123 yds, 0 SCK (1 RUSH TD)
Overall – 83.9

I included the 1997 season since Elway went back to back. But those are the SB Champion QBs since he’s been in the league. So now let’s take an in depth look at this. I’ll give you his first three trips were poor, but he gets points taken away for being a young QB on a poor team that hasn’t even come close to his peak? That’s sort of a catch 22. Pretty sure people were trying to hump Flacco and Ryan for just making the playoffs this year.

So what do we have? Well let’s see, Manning has been eliminated with his overall playoff rating being:
2008 – 90.1
2007 – 97.7
2005 – 90.9
2004 – 107.4
2003 – 106.4
2002 – 31.2
2000 – 82.0
1999 – 62.3

However, in Manning’s entire postseason career, he’s fumbled 3 times and lost 1. He has 3 rushing TDs unaccounted for. His completion % is 61.6, and his QB rating is 84.9 (substandard to his regular season average, I’ll give you that). He’s played 1 game short of a full season in the playoffs. He has 4207 yds passing, 22 TDs, 17 INTs, 3 Rushing TDs, and 1 fumble lost. Manning has been eliminated from the playoffs the past 3 times after a 90+ outing and no fumbles. I’ll continue to look it up, but I can be pretty close to certain, that few QBs with 90+ rated outings get eliminated, much less 3 times.

By the way? That Tom Brady kid? The one that’s the playoff hero and “ups his game”?
17 Postseason games, 3954 yds, 88.0 QB rating. Considering he wasn’t doing those on a team that he came to that was 3-13…

And remember, I only included the people that “raise the level of their game” and go on to win the SB. I could keep going and continue this beatdown. I mean, Tom Brady had a 66.4 and an 82.5 rating last year. Remember, this is skewed towards making Manning’s numbers seem less impressive. You might want to seriously check yourself before I get a chance to read your posts. Because I can tell you, I am thorough.

Nope

He still isn’t a HoFer. From 2003-2007, he played like crap. HoFers play consistently good year after year. Warner is a remarkable story, but his wretched play in 2000, and from 2003-2007, cannot simply be overlooked. He was benched three times by three different teams. HoFers aren’t benched like that.

Yeah but hack QBs don’t lead crappy teams like the Rams to 2 Super Bowls while being the league MVP the same year. And then take one of the worst franchises in American sports history to the Super Bowl as well. If the Cardinals win the Super Bowl, leaving him out as a 2 time league MVP, 3 Super bowl appearances and 2 Super Bowl titles is just bad. Who cares if he had bad years from 2003-2007, HoF QBs overcome stuff like that and lead teams like the Cardinals to the Super Bowl.

I don't think Warner is a "hack"

I think he is a fine QB whose story is very uplifting. And you say “Who cares if he had bad years from 2003-2007,” then that means you think that voters should just ignore almost HALF the man’s career. Focus only on the good stuff and not the crap. Sorry, but it doesn’t work that way.

3 Super Bowl appearances is amazing. 2 MVPs is, again, amazing. The problem with Warner is he has never been consistently good. He was great (1999), then crap (2000), then great (2001), then crap for a long time (2002-2007), and now he’s great again (2008).

Sorry, but having only 3 good years compared to 6 years of crap is NOT a HoF player. Warner has only been in the playoffs four times. He was benched in St. Louis, NY, and in Arizona for inconsistent play. He is a turnover machine with 119 INTs and an astounding 91 fumbles.

Again, Warner is a fine player. But his 3rd SB appearance does not make him a HoFer. HoFers are consistently good. Warner isn’t consistent.

I think one thing you are failing to realize is that Warner was having a good season in 2000 until he got hurt. Same for 2002. The only year he had that was “bad” was the one year he was in New York. Even in 2007 he had good stats for only starting what, 11 games or something?

I don’t find it to be a coincidence that whenever Warner is healthy, he’s one of the best QBs in the league.

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Not True BBS

I think if you win Super Bowls along with league MVPs, chances are you will go to the HoF. If you throw in Terry Bradshaw for example, he goes against everything you just said BBS. He may have had only 2, 3, maybe 4 good consistent years and those werent even great. He played ver very poorly (HoF standard) but made his name for winning 4 Super Bowls.

although the colts were one and done in the playoffs…no thanks to ron winter for assistance on that…I have pleasure in knowing we spanked the ravens and beat the steelers AT PITT. I dont think this is a given…. pitt already proclaimed superbowl win by the media and vegas because there is something about this cardinals team and the underdog part that just feels right in this superbowl.

the ravens didnt deserve to be in the superbowl as did the eagles. the ravens NO offense was very hard for our eyes to watch and although Im so very happy they outted the overrated titans this year to me after its all said and one, there is no great team. the eagles tied cincy. I have a problem with that and their ride to the superbowl. NY was not the same team as they were in the beginning of the year…insert plaxio fiasco. pitt is a good team and they got the gift of playing every game at home which is a big asset but yet after watching that very boring game last night I still feel the colts would have beaten them had they been matched up. but congrats to them anyways

I want edge to get a ring
I want the iowa qb to get another ring
I want larry fitzgerald to get a ring
I want the HUGE underdog to feel that feeling of the impossible

and most of all I want a superbowl that is not marred by crappy reffing deciding the game

I just don’t want Ben Roflsburger to have more rings than Peyton. : /

This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

Cards for sure

EDGE

I didn’t watch that much football yesterday – it was really difficult knowing that we should have been playing Baltimore at home last night.

I want Edge to get a ring.

Steelers, please. But I’m not too bothered. Enjoyed the NFC title game in a pub in Nice, France. Trippy.

I think Warner’s a HoF guy. I don’t know if he strictly deserves to be, but I think he’ll get there.

hmm....

hahaha so Tomlin is a Dungy protege?

So spending 1 year under a coach makes you his protege? I’d think he would have been a Gruden protege (you know, since he spent 4 years under Gurden) but hey, I do not expect that type of logic. I guess whatever can be used to praise Dungy here, right?

Anyway, I just hope for a good game.

Dungy brought him into the league.

Dungy ... Tomlin

When NFL Films did their Tony Dungy Coaching Tree special, Tomlin was there on the panel along with Herm and Lovie and Marinelli, etc. One would venture that he was not paid exhorbitant amounts of money nor was he forced there by kidnappers who held his kids hostage—i.e. he was there by choice and considers himself a branch of the Dungy tree.

But please, think whatever you want, it is a free country.

Speaking of Proteges...

I wonder where Caldwell would place hmiself.
7 years under Dungy, but another 15-20 under various giants in the college game. Paterno, anyone?

Ok, I dont get this

Many Colts fans claim the Colts have 2 SB rings. One with Indy and one with Baltimore. I know there have been 2 SB trophies made for Baltimore’s first SB and one still resides in Baltimore and one with the Rams dead owner. So am I right in saying the Colts have 2 rings as a franchise and only 1 with the city of Indianapolis?
