Meeks Gone?
MEEKS OUT IN INDY?
Posted by Mike Florio on January 19, 2009, 8:33 p.m. ESTA source with knowledge of the Colts’ organization has given us an intriguing tip.
Defensive coordinator Ron Meeks apparently has been fired by new coach Jim Caldwell.
We’re not reporting it as hard news yet, and we apologize to the various writers who’ll now be dispatched by their editors to chase this one.
We’ve got no reason to doubt our source, however.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen suggested on Sunday that changes could be coming to the defensive coaching staff. The departure of Meeks would be a fairly significant one.
Earlier this month, Meeks was interviewed by the Jets for the head-coaching position that officially was filled today by former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.
Meeks, like former Colts special teams coordinator Russ Purnell, joined the team with former head coach Tony Dungy in 2002.
Mortensen also reported on Sunday that owner Jim Irsay had to persuade offensive coordinator Tom Moore and offensive line coach Howard Mudd not to retire.
Bottom line? The transition from Dungy to new coach Jim Caldwell has hardly been seamless or smooth.

No Way
He would fire Meeks unless someone like Marinelli or Edwards were available, which they aren’t.

Florio says it's official

We are at a crossroads now. We could do anything with our defense. Will we keep the Tampa-2 or will we go with a normal 4-3 or even a 3-4? The speculation begins…now! Go!

The personnel locks them into a Tampa-2
The speculation ends….now! Stop!
Seriously there won’t be any massive changes. Indy’s D might become a more aggressive Tampa-2 like they run in Chicago and they may start using other 4-3 schemes a bit more often, but they can’t make wholesale changes without gutting the personnel.

agreed
if Meeks really does go, I don’t really think it’s such a bad thing. I think our defense needs a bit of a shakeup. I know I can’t say that I was %100 happy with the way our defense played this season or any season in a long time. I get nervous any time a team runs the ball on us. Now, we all know that it’s not an awful defense by any means, but it could get better.

no kidding--
we have so much talent on the defensive side of the ball, it really doesn’t make sense that we should be underperforming the way we did last season.

no no there will be no 3-4 defense
that probably could be the dumbest move by Caldwell….but anyways it will not happen.

This is a bunch of bull. The only person reporting this is PFT and everyone is citing PFT as their one and only source. I’ll believe it when I see it.
This line will remain in my signature until the Colts draft Rashad Jennings in 2009.

I believe it
and I’m glad. Caldwell needs to shake things up and make the staff his own. We’ll be losing Moore and Mudd eventually, so if we want to make changes to the defensive side of the ball, now is a good time.

Let's verify the story
First, it’s Florio. This is the same douchebag that had Marvin Harrison doing gang hits in Philly last summer. Second, if the story is true (and it likely is because Meeks was always protected by Dungy), it means that either Alvin Williams will ascend to DC, or the Colts will bring in another experienced Tampa 2 guy, like Herm Edwards or Ron Rivera.
Any talk of switching to a 3-4 is stupid. The 3-4 is not “better” than the Tampa-2. And Caldwell has stated the systems already implemented here will not change. Caldwell is getting rid of people who he thinks Dungy protected. Dungy did not like to fire coaches. Like bad players, you pretty much had to F up royally to get fired. While guts like Purnell were incompetent, they never Fed up royally.
So, if there is a change, look for Williams, Edwards, Donnie Henderson, Ron Rivera, or Joe Woods (the db coach in Minnesota). All are Tampa-2 guys.

If it is true
You can’t speculate until the replacement is announced, what/if any free agents before the draft, and who they target in the draft. But there’s already too many conflicting reports to take anything at face value unless it’s announced officially by the Colts. Three days ago Caldwell and co. were proud to announce retaining the coordinators. So we’ll see.

Caldwell
He never mentioned he was “proud” to retain Meeks and Purnell. He was referring more to Tom Moore, Russ Purnell, and John Teerlick.

Yea I don't know what to think
I think Meeks will stay, but I wouldn’t mind Rivera off all “canidates” to take over. Until then, its all speculation, but I could have sworn that Polian mentioned that the staff would be settled in the next 10 days (it was said on the 15th)
I expect there will be a few. It could be guys going elsewhere. It could be that Jim (Caldwell) might want to make a change or two. All of that will come in due course. I would say that in the next 10 days that would straighten itself out. That’s normal anyway.
I know what he said was very general, but if there are going to be any more moves, we should expect them soon. But my guess is that Meeks will stay.

If true
Expect Alan Williams to get a promotion.

Officially my favorite response to the report
“We can officially report the team has fired Meeks. Except they haven’t really. They just most likely probably definitely will at some point. But that’s official.” (posted by reptar)

I don't like this
My sense is that we’ve been “this” close with our defense. Our pass defense rocks. Our rush defense needs shoring up, but in large part because we lost a couple of key guys. Of course I’m not on the field and in practice, so I don’t know if his system just doesn’t work, but this seems like too much change, too fast.
I hope that if this is true, there is someone FANTASTIC waiting in the wings.

I'm changing my vote.
A few days ago I was ok with this.
Now, after having an open mind and reading what most of you have been posting, I am not ok with it. Dungy and Meeks leaving would be too much change, I think, for our D. You guys are absolutely right. Rational. Makes sense. Plus, I don’t know who they would get to replace him and after reading more about Herm, I’m not comfortable with his becoming the DC. DB coach, yes. DC, no.

I'm ok with it
There has been questionable personel moves, see Gilbert Gardner.
Inconsistant play.
Inability to stop the run.
Inability to stop 3rd and longs, this year.
And a whole bunch of one and dones.
It may be time for a change

Probably doesn’t help that there were an insane amount of injuries and players who quit/were kicked off the team. No one seems to be taking that into account.

GOOD POINT
But, inconsistant play, inability to stop the run, have been problems since he became a colts coach.
Even with the injuries,it’s hard to believe that Eric Foster is a legitimate NFL nose tackle. Why was he playing more then Johnson? Why did Buster Davis get the nod over Hagler, even for just a game. Davis couldn’t even make the Lions roster, yet he’s better then a 7 game starter, on a defense that was playing better then this years version.
These are questionable decisions that should be scruitinized. As long as they stay with scheme I’m ok with the change.

Our defense didn't lose the game
This year our defense was the better of the two units. Last year our defense was fine. The year before our defense is what won us the Super Bowl. #1 defense in 2007, #2 in 2005, played like the #1 in 2006. In 2008, we had to recover from Pitcock and Johnson. And we did. The end of the year numbers don’t quantify the overall effort and where we ended the season. Starting at the Titans game we were giving up 91 ypg on the ground. And that’s including the 178 yards from Slaton. The numbers were so far out of whack because of the huge games we gave up at the beginning of the season. Put that in perspective, that’d be 3rd best in the league.
Take into account all the 3 and outs our offense was having, forcing our defense to play quite a bit more, it doesn’t help. So what’re we gaining? Our defense hasn’t gone backwards because of coaching, it was due to the loss of players. Our pass defense just broke a pretty decent record, giving up 6 total TDs for the year. How much was it Dungy? I don’t know, but I do know that our defense is one DT and one LB from become dominant. I have less questions about defense than I do about offense. At least I know where the focal point is on making it better on that side.
