Rookies and Tomorrows Game
As you all remember, the Colts problem last year was generating a pass rush on Phillip RIvers and Billy Volek. I know that they havent had much playing time this year, but I have a feeling the Marcus Howard and possibly Curtis Johnson may play critical roles in tomorrows game if we want to win. They showed the ability to generate pressure last week and seemed to have improved since we last saw them extensively in the preseason. If the Colts can force the Chargers to play catch up, look for a rotation between Freeney, Mathis, Howard, and Johnson to keep a consistent rush on Rivers to keep him off balance and to keep our players fresh/

Freeney and Mathis
last year we also didn’t have freeney and a very banged up mathis… This is will a lot different this year. I just hope their field has been fixed so we don’t end up winning but losing guys to bad injuries.
An expert is someone who knows more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing...

I understand that Freeney was on IR and Mathis was dinged
But I felt in that week 13 match this year, Rivers was still afforded some time in the pocket. Mathis did come up with a clutch sack, strip, fumble, but I think if we include Howard and Johnson, there may be a more consistent rush to keep Rivers under pressure all day

i agree
but at the same time, im a little weary that the DE’s will focus on that sack and let a little screen pass or draw play go for some big yardage. If we can control that, the Colts should be good.

thats why
the Colts should rotate them as situational pass rushers. Dont over use them, but use them from time to time for relief. Something like a third and twelve or something equivalent to that distance.

But
Thats when you want Freeney and Mathis to do some real damage

I don't know...
The Giants were able to generate such a pass rush in their playoff run by utilizing their great depth along the DL. I think with the rookies we have, we could do the same thing to great effect.
I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

Difference in depth
They had two proven, big time, passrushers in Strahan and Umeniuora, (sp?) with another pro-bowler in Justin tuck. Plus they have like two backups at DT that could start for us.
We have two awesome passrushers, then two rookies who’s only meaningful contribution came in a nothing win.
I’m all for playing them, but only if/when we are up by two scores on passing downs.

the difference between the Colts depth and Giants depth
the giants DL depth is coming from first round picks, such as Mathias Kiwanuka, and players that have been around longer than their rookie year. Remember it took freeney, a high first round pick, almost a year to get into the game and have an impact, so to ask that of late round picks is probably too much. I think next year the Colts will have a lot of good depth, since Brock, Freeney, and Mathis are all signed long term, and their two young pass rushers should have atleast 3 years left, and Foster should be an ERFA and I’m not sure what Mookie will be, but hopefully next year is when the DL starts to fall into place.
