Can we PLEASE blitz 1 time, just once??
I understand the cover two, and I understand that it is one of the most flaccid defensive schemes known to man. Especially in overtime, playing the cover two is a death sentence. We are so predictable on defense its disgusting.
Imagine Freeney and Mathis coming off the ends with another man or two flying up the middle. It causes the QB to rush and all kinds of things can happen, especially with a fast defense. Its really disappointing to see us sit back and get nickeled and dimed all the way to the endzone.

we didn't have the personell for it
our LBs aren’t blitzers. Maybe they are changing that with Wheeler who was a great pass rusher in college, but blitzing wasn’t an option last night. It would have just taken guys out of coverage without any payoff.
They got 2 stops in OT, but blew them by penalties.

wasn't an option?
I’m fine with our corners playing tight and making Marmalard beat us. I’m not saying to blitz all the time. But just mix it up, christ.

We need a true NT
to make the cover 2 truly affective. I saw alot of pressure yesterday and didnt feel the need to blitz. I dont think that was the reason the Colts lost.

I agree that playing the Cover 2 in OT isn't the best idea
It’s “bend but don’t break”, but it is so little bending room in OT.

a big DL
we def need a big guy in the middle like a albert haynesworth if we have that guy we wouldnt be talking about the refs and the missed chances they ran all over us every year our run d struggles if we get a big dominating DT we will be a lot better so im thinkin cut marvin have peyton take yet another pay cut and sign a DT maybe tommie harris etc… just somebody we need to spend some money this year unless were looking at more playoff losses to come.

The Colts actually did blitz a number of times last night. I think you need to pay a litle more attention.

Why blitz?
Our ends combined for 4 sacks – seems like we can cause chaos in the pocket without all-out blitzes. What we need to do is upgrade our ability to tackle. And to run block.

special teams more than anything
18to88 posted this
Chargers’ net punting average: 51.7
Colts’ net punting average: 31.5
The O had awful field position all game (5 drives started inside their own 10), while the Chargers drove less than 50 yards for all 3 of their regulation time scores.

yep
ST/field position was huge but hey, easy to just blame the offense rather than look at what happened in the game and think that continually starting within your own 10 should lead to auto TDs.
It is the “in” thing to do to blame Indy’s offense whenever they lose. Apparently many Colts fans do not feel that indy should get better ST and a more consistent D. Why have a great all around team when you can just have a great offense and blame it when the other areas fail.
Amazing how so many are so lacking in football knowledge.

When the offense can not run the ball whatsoever, especially in shortyardage situations like the Colts had so many times last night (especially when they had the chance to ice the game with just over 2 minutes and no timeouts for the Chargers)…then I think some of the blame can be on them too. Like I keep saying, field position (ST on both sides – Chargers punter and no return game for the Colts) and the lack of running game killed the Colts last night.

yeah
167 rush yards allowed and at least 3 3rd and 10s converted was great D.
Funny that when indy loses but gives up rush yards everyone screams about how bad the rush D is but last night they give up a a lot and it gets a pass. Solid logic.
Last night Mathis and Freeney played amazing and the D on 1st and 2nd down was pretty good. However, it is 3rd down that matters and they made mistake after mistake.
I also fail to see how the offense gave up the tying FG and then the TD in OT. Pretty sure the D gave up those 9 points but hey, apparently it is taboo to accept reality that Indy’s D is mediocre.
Next time maybe you should watch the game and see what happened rather than go play the offense blame game.
It is no wonder management refuses to get a championship D for this team since homers defend it at every turn…

The defense held the Chargers to 17 in regulation.
That should be enough for a Peyton Manning led offense. Rregardless of yards, 17 points. Only 14 until the very end, after our offense couldn’t get a first down and punted from their goal line (again).
Why couldn’t the offense do more? Because WE HAVE A HORRIBLE OFFENSIVE LINE! Peyton Manning masks it some with his decisiveness, quick release, and all around awesomeness, but it showed last night often. And all season it showed during the attempts at running the ball. This is the worst offensive line I have ever seen since Manning has been there. I am not saying there is no reason. I’m saying that for whatever reason, the line stinks.
And so our defense getting turnovers turned into nothing at all on back to back drives. We need OL help.
Oh, and I hate that punter!

agreed
The D held a very high scoring offense and the league’s top rated passer at home very much in check (with a little fumble luck and a pick). That was pretty good. The “soft” run D was the result of very good coverage and a pre-determined tradeoff I am sure.
Where I’d love to have seen a “blitz” if that is the right word was maybe putting 11 men on the line to rush Scifres last couple punts. What can happen? Worst case, they down it on the 1 (whch they did anyway). Slightly better, it rolls into the EZ, better yet, he shanks one, better still, he is jumpy never knowing if it’s a block or return setup, better yet we block it and recover safing 60 yards of field position, best of all, Scifres gets injured in the melee.
So really, we suffered the worst case scenario repeatedly but never made an attempt to block. Might as well try. Who knows, if they see 11 on the line they might burn a TO to strategize. That’s a positive play as well.

The OL
And I wouldn’t worry excessively—with all those rookies and injuries this year, I bet it will be much improved next year. Where we want it? Maybe not, but 20% better it still enough for 18, 29, and maybe the old 32 to work their magic.

agree about the line
don’t know that it is the personnel.. I think the injuries are what did it this year, and the inexperience. I think a more consistent set of 5 people and another offseason of practice this line could be a lot better.
