2009 Colts Free Agents

I woke up this morning after last night's rough loss and was worried about what big Colts names might have their contracts running out. The good news is, the list below looks manageable. They are all UFA's. Here's hoping they place the franchise tag on Saturday.

Matt Giordano (S)
Keiwan Ratliff (CB)
Dominic Rhodes (RB)
Jeff Saturday (C)
Josh Thomas (DE)

I'm curious to hear what everyone out there thinks about who the Colts should focus on re-signing and who they should let walk. I think Saturday, Giordano, and Rhodes should be top priorities.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

What about

Mike Hart? He will be returning next season could be splitting carries with addai instead of rhodes?

True, but...

I don’t know what his health status is. But that’s a good point. With Addai, Hart, Simpson and even maybe Lance Ball how badly do you need Rhodes? I thought Rhodes was our best back this year though. But I was excited to see Hart in pre-season play and he did not disappoint. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Coltscap has 7 UFAs and a RFA

Matt Giordano (S)
Keiwan Ratliff (CB)
Dominic Rhodes (RB)
Jeff Saturday ©
Josh Thomas (DE)
Darrell Reid (DT/DE/FB/Special Team Ace)
Tyjuan Hagler (LB)

and Dan Federkiel is an RFA

that doesn’t include guys with opt outs or voided years (like Sanders and Clark last year) which I think is what is up with Hunter Smith. Coltscap has him signed for next year, but he’s on the free agent lists for this offseason.

assumed he had that one, copy pasted then added the sneaky ones I saw weren’t on there

Thanks

I would hate to see Reid go. He seems to be a bright spot on what I feel like is a weak special teams unit. I’d hate to see Hunter go as well.

While of course I'm a Cal homer and would like to see Giordano stay...

… my brain tells me that Saturday is priority #1 – he knows the craziness that is Manning audibles and has been an outstanding Center to boot. The other positions I am much less versed in so hard to comment…

Thanks for starting this thread

I was just about to ask about what people’s thoughts are on specific players next year, both in terms of FAs and possible draft picks

by LovinBlue on Jan 4, 2009 10:05 PM EST reply actions

In order I'd say

Saturday-can’t afford to lose the best player off the line

Hayden-Jennings is getting there, but I’d really like him to stay in the nickel and losing Hayden means Marlin or Hughes would have to play on the outside in nickel where their lack of speed is more exposed.

(big dropoff)

Reid/Ratliff- Probably replaceable, but they should be cheap enough to be worth resigning

Thomas/Hagler- Giving Buster a tryout at Haglers expense shows where he factors into the teams future plans. I’ve never been a Josh Thomas fan, if they can finally get enough DT depth to keep Brock outside full time Thomas should be gone.

Federkiel- he could be back for cheap as a continuing project, but after 3 years a guy should be able to play a competent guard

I agree with this. I think they’ll left Rhodes go and hopefully draft another running back.

by KingRichard on Jan 4, 2009 10:27 PM EST up reply actions

Forgot Hunter and Gio (and Rhodes)

both go into the Reid/Ratliff level. They can be replaced, but the team is probably better off paying them and focusing draft/undrafted spots on other spots.

Dom depends on Hart’s recovery and Edge’s availability and price tag. If Edge will come home for little more than the vet minimum then Dom gets the boot. If Hart is going to be ready to go they could still let Dom walk and go with Hart/Simpson/Ball/rookie? behind Addai.

Sorry...

redundant question (FAs… on the market)… blame it on the 2nd glass of wine ;-)

pretty solid listing here, with info on top guys

not that the Colts are laying big money for anyone not already on the team.

I’d pimp Babineaux as a solid DT pickup, but Saturday was the first time I’ve watched him play since he was at Iowa

I say, in order:
Saturday
Hayden
Reid
Rhodes

Saturday is arguably the best center in the league. Hayden and Jackson are the best run-stopping corners in the NFL. Reid is the special teams ace. Rhodes could easily find himself the odd man out, with Addai, Ball, Simpson, and Hart.

I would like to see the Colts bring in Shane Lechler or Mike Scifres and see what they’re asking for.

Bob Sanders eats a forest on Friday so he can lay the wood on Sunday.

If we let Hayden go - compensation pick?

Im assuming he would be the only potential FA player where the Colts would get that compensation pick if he would sign with a different team?

by ColtsFanNChiTown on Jan 4, 2009 11:59 PM EST reply actions

Not so sure about Saturday

I think that is really comes down to how much money he wants. The rookies didn’t look that bad coming in and saturday was hurt twice this season… not good in an older player. If he wants big money I could see them letting him go as we do have some decent backups in the rookies and an older player who is now starting to get hurt is a risky proposition.

Hunter has had the easiest job in the NFL.. I can’t see them giving him big money. And I doubt any of the others could command huge dollars.

What is the colts cap situation for next year? At least we won’t be carrying the dead weight of corey simon…

Marvin

All our resignings/future signings are probably based upon if Marvin’s willing to restructure. And I want him to stay with the team so I hope he does restructure, but you can’t really justify a 13 million cap hit. If he does we’ll probably keep Saturday and Hayden and ask Rhodes how much he wants to stay. I’m thinking there might be a possibility that they ask Rhodes, then ask Edge if he’d be willing to play for less than that and he might say yes.

One thing’s for sure though, our running game straight up sucks. And I really don’t see them letting Saturday go. And as much as Rhodes has meant to the team, and has been the more consistent back this year, our rushing game sucks. So what is it? It’s up for Polian/Dungy or whomever our coach may be to determine if it’s the line or the backs if not a combination of both. So I’m not sure I see them paying Rhodes what he wants if he tries to do what he did last year going to Oakland. But we have to fix the run. And as the Colts have done in the past, they’ll probably try to fix our problems through the draft. I’m pretty sure they’ll resign Saturday and to a lesser degree of certainty resign Hayden. He definitely is our best CB with Jackson out.

I hope Edge doesn't come back

While I did enjoy watching him find the fountain of youth last weekend, I don’t think bringing Edge back is a good option. I’d rather see one of the guys already on the team like Mike Hart get a shot at some carries. Edge has had a lousy year. One game does not change any of that for me.

in order

1.saturday- obvious hes the best center in the game
2 rhodes- we need him hes a good back
3 ratliff- filled in good on the defense and hes young i would like to keep him hes just gonna get better.
4 thomas- good for the DL rotation
5 giordono- hes a decent player if they let em go it wont hurt much
ps. im pretty sure kelvin hayden is a free agent

How old? Curious

He’s had a few pretty darn good games since they re-re-re-signed him. ;)

Perhaps for another thread but...

… anyone know how the rest of guys who were on IR this year are doing? or their chances of returning?

didn't Mike Hart have a blog somewhere?

Just throwing this out there

The Colts will have 8, slight chance at 9 draft picks this year (one per round since they haven’t traded any away, plus a compensation pick for Jake Scott and maybe a 7th rounder for Utecht)

We don't get one for Utech

Since he wasn’t offered anything more than the lowest tender of RFA
