The coin toss

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AjT3RQStwHsAc6EC9sXAiPg5nYcB?slug=ms-morningrush010509&prov=yhoo&type=lgns Good column by Michael Silver about the game and some inside information. Apparently, we should never trust anybody else on the team to do something that Peyton can do himself. There is an interview with Dungy and also some comments from Freeney on the way to the bus. Our season ended way to early. Next year should be interesting. Here's hoping that Peyton will be in training camp and we can get everybody on the same page.

I was screaming at the TV

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?!? DOESN’T EVERYONE KNOW THAT “TAILS NEVER FAILS”?!?!

I knew it was over at that moment and than 1/10th of a second later seeing the Charger’s reaction like a giddy child – darn.

by LovinBlue on Jan 5, 2009 8:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yep.

The second I heard “heads” I knew it was over.

I found myself screaming: “TAILS! TAILS! WHY THE F**K DID YOU PICK HEADS? HEADS ALWAYS LOSES – EVERYONE KNOWS THAT!”

I bet Peyton won’t defer again.

It’s always nice to see how much faith people actually have in the team.

I thought we could stop them

And we did twice. But I do realize the extreme advantage of the people winning the toss and the fact that they had Sproles as a returner.

Whatever though, at least going into the offseason we hav narrowed where we need to upgrade or focus on to become as dominant as any team could hope to be. We’re on the cusp of turning a great team into one that’ll be remembered for years. At least I hope so. This loss should serve to light a fire going into next year.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the OT rules. I don’t agree with the college rule being adapted to the NFL. The only thing I might think would be better is that you let the team play the entire quarter. They use the excuse for the Fairness comitte or whatever jargon they want to throw at you saying there’s a competitive disadvantage to playing more than 1 OT. But since they let the teams play the entire 15 minutes in regular season if nobody scores than what’s the difference of letting them continue to play if they do score? I honestly think OT is anticlimatic because of the above mentioned statement “The second I heard "heads" I knew it was over.” That’s not a minority consensus. Besides, the team that wins the toss still has a significant advantage, but not an overwhelming advantage like everyone complains about. If playing out the entire quarter was the norm, most of us would be saying the penalties were iffy but weren’t the reason we lost. And that’s what happens in the NFL on the regular; weird plays, weird bounces, bad calls, there’s a number of ways scores could happen. Could you imagine the Chargers fans if the Colts won the toss and Manning did what he did on the 70+ yard TD to Wayne? And the fact that you can win on a FG is just silly. Maybe if they made it that you had to win by 4 or more points instead of 3. I know it’s all hopes and dreams, but there are definitely ways to improve the OT system that wouldn’t adversely effect the experience. As it stands, the playing field is definitely skewed. For a league that prides itself on a level playing field it just seems out of sync.

LovinBlue’s exactly right. When you see a team react the way people do in OT when they win a coin toss, you know there’s a competitive advantage. And not even discussing eliminating it is a problem. Sometimes abandoning tradition is a step forward, call me crazy. Besides, they pretty much made up that rule at the end of the game anyway. To say it was well thought out and the pros and cons weighed is laughable.

Not a matter of faith.

A matter of superstition.

Also, the D had been on the field for most of the game…I figured they were tired.

Thanks for judgin’ tho.

If it makes you feel better

I felt extremely nervous, threw my hands into the air after the toss and said to my friend “Great, now we’re going to lose.”

What does losing a coin toss have to do with superstition?

by KingRichard on Jan 6, 2009 12:50 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

winner of the coin toss wins 60% of the time

half of those times the other team never touches the ball.

The best OT proposal I’ve heard is just add 10 minutes. Doesn’t turn it into a “football shootout” and doesn’t let the flip of a coin make a significant difference in who wins.

That sounds the most "fair".

can you or anyone else

explain why the game ‘starts over’ for OT? Its not half time, I don’t understand the need to redo the coin toss and everything, you’re just extending the game. Should just let the 4th quarter carry over into the 5th quarter and not ‘okay, the past 4 quarters didn’t happen, now we’re doin a coin toss and the first team to score wins’.

Because

Like I said, they completely made it up in the Giants/Colts championship. They basically went up to each other after thinking the game was over and were like “Uh, we can’t have 2 champions Bob.” And Bob turned to him and said “You’re right Sam, but we already packed up the ball because this has never happened before. Do you even remember where the ball was?” “I sure don’t Bob, I guess we could flip a coin and start over? And man, it’s pretty cold out here so you want to just say whoever scores first wins? I don’t want to be out here all night, they’re only paying me 2 bucks.” “Sure Sam, that sounds good, let’s do that.”

And that is the untold story behind overtime. But now for some reason, I guess the league feels that guys sat around in the dead of summer thinking up every sort of possible OT suggestion and brilliant minds spent restless nights coming up with the ultimate solution.

I like this idea, including

just running from the 4th quarter into the 5th semi-quarter

by LovinBlue on Jan 6, 2009 3:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

maybe what they should do

Maybe what they should do is start the overtime at your own 10 or 15 yard line and let the winner decide if they want the ball or want to play defense. This way you make the field longer for the offense to start. The team that wins the toss gets to chose if they want the ball or they want to play defense. If a team has a good defense, they would probably want to put their defense on the field first and try to keep the other team pinned deep. Makes more sense this way because both teams have a chance.

Why have a coin toss?

You already have one in the beginning of the game..

So if the team that wins the toss at the beginning of the game elects to receive, then after the half they kick. Then at the start of OT they get to receive.
