Chargers V. Jackson = Retarded = DUI
Say what you want (everyone already has I believe), but the "case" involving Harrison has been dropped by the DA and so he wasn't charged, arrested, nothing but some bad publicity by ESPN who has a bunch of sources named Bob, Joe, and Dick. In other news today, Vincent Jackson of the San Diego Chargers was arrested today. He decided the best way to get prepared for the Steelers in the Divisional Playoff Game this weekend was to get wasted and then drive off somewhere at 2 o'clock in the morning. Im not the one who likes to bash other teams players (espcially from a team who just knocked out the Colts), but how stupid can a player get. I just thought I would give an example on the differerce between a player getting arrested and not getting arrested. Its a coincidence but yet funny that these two stories were reported today...please express your comments.

Oops.
Seriously though. There are plenty of people out there who make mistakes and get DUI’s. I personally haven’t had one, although I have been pulled over and breathalizered before. I am dead against drinking and driving, but I guess I fail to see why this is news. Whenever someone on an NFL team gets a DUI, it’s all over news outlets…why?
I think it was a stupid decision but I don’t think Vincent Jackson is a complete idiot for making a mistake like this.

one reason it is news
in my opinion, is the 24/7/365 internet monster and news ticker that has to be constantly fed. Every media outlet has to regularly keep posting new material (even if there isn’t really anything news-worthy going on) and update the continuing stories to stay relevant. Sometimes it’s more tiring than anything else after feeding on every detail after a while. If players are going to misbehave, it WILL be reported on. And by the way, regular folks get their names written up in the local papers for being charged with DUI’s too, just like the big boys.

You're right
I was aware that newpapers report on regular people.
I think the media hypes this stuff up too much. I just don’t agree that DUI’s are really headline material like you may see on ESPN’s ticker on the bottom of the screen. Or why every time an NFL player gets a DUI it has to end up as a fanpost about how stupid they are.

I have to believe that some players just don't get how much of a fishbowl they really live in
until they find themselves on the wrong end of a news report and have to face the consequences.
Last summer I told my son at least twenty times to plan on having to pay around $500 dollars for books for his first semester of college. It couldn’t have been more clear. Soon after his classes started he called me and said, “Do you know how much I had to pay for my books? Five hundred dollars!”
In the silence that followed on my end he then added, “I know you told me it could be $500, but I never thought mine would ever be that much.” Is this a guy thing? An immaturity thing?? An elitist ‘the world and it’s rules don’t apply to me’ thing???
Whatever the reason, this is how it is and the players are going to have to deal with everything that comes with being in the NFL. It’s definitely a double-edged blessing.
Keep the faith!

LOL - sons
Another thing about this is that he is currently on probation from an earlier DUI conviction.
California is VERY tough on this stuff. Since he has technically violated his probation with another DUI, he actually could be looking at jail time. Now, he has money, so that probably won’t happen. I can guarantee he won’t be driving (legally) for a while.
I haven’t had one personally, but I have had coworkers and a few friends blow a .08 (which isn’t very high). The ramifications are pretty serious. The funny thing is that the DMV is tougher on individuals than the courts.

if it's a repeat DUI then I look at it a bit different
in my mind that puts him more in the Jared Allen-Leonard Little shithead class than the Dom-Cato June made a mistake class.

didn't know about this being the second DUI
changes it from a bone-headed mistake to a problem.

DUIs
Well, it does vary from state to state so without knowing too much about the situation I’ll withold judgement. But in my opinion, a DUI or DWI especially, is way worse than possession of or driving under the influence of marijuana. If I was being chased through the woods by a pack of rabid monkeys (I saw skeleton crew, don’t tell me monkeys aren’t scary) and I came to a highway with two cars and one was blaring Bob Marley with smoke coming out of it and the dude was laughing and the other one had a dude with a wife beater and barely able to form a non-slurred word, I can tell you straight up the choice wouldn’t be very difficult to make. Granted, if it was a good looking chick in the drinking car I’d just move her to the other seat, but I digress.
You get drunk because you cut off the oxygen supply to the brain and destroy your liver. You laugh and eat when you smoke and it’s been proven over a 6 year study to not cause cancer.
I’m not saying either is good, but giving people free passes for DUIs and slamming the books on others (e.g. Ricky Williams – come on, seriously, why hate on Ricky? The dude was so messed up he wouldn’t take his helmet off the first two years) is pretty much a double standard. Remember, if you want to smoke, go to the NBA athletes. I’m pretty sure they give you a sample in the rookie orientation booklet.

Sorry, forgot to add this…
Seriously, if I made MILLIONS, that’s right MIIIIILLLLIONS of dollars every year, I think if I did happen to get blitzed going out, I’d probably call up some luxury car service. Or come on, really, you’re a NFL star and you don’t have any friends that want to hang out that you can con into being a DD? Really? I just don’t get it. Everytime I hear about these stars or anyone who makes a ton of money, they’re always driving around late at night by themselves it seems. It’s really depressing if you think about it in that context. I mean I’m not famous or rich, but if I wanted to I could find somebody to be my DD.
