Polian on Hayden - Free Agency
This quote was made by Polian during his weekly show and the transcipt can be found on Colts.com. I thought this was interesting yet refreshing on the free agency of Kelvin Hayden:
"Secondly, players who are entering new contracts may not receive anything but a 30 percent increase year to year. In (cornerback) Kelvin Hayden’s case he’s a free agent who we will very likely re-sign. He can receive no more than a 30 percent increase over his first year for every succeeding year of his contract, which means obviously that his first year will have to be very, very cash heavy and very cap heavy."
Right away, my eyes just keyed on the part of "we will very likely re-sign him." I really haven't heard Polian in the past come out and say that regarding one of his own free agent players. If Hayden will indeed be locked up by the Colts this offseason, then I would think the secondary would have to be one of the best in the league...most likely THE best. However, after reading what else he had to say about this offseason and the issue regarding the cap, I am not so confident that Saturday will be re-signed. I hope I am wrong, but I'm thinking that they will try to use Lilja as the number one option at center while Johnson, Pollak, and Richard fight for the guard positions.
Heres the link on what else he had to say:

If for some reason the Colts didn’t re-sign Saturday, I still think Lilja would be the option instead of Richard. Polian mentioned that Lilja would have been the back-up this season to Saturday, but obviously couldnt due to his knee. Im not sure though now with Richard getting some playing time at that position, whether he will still be the 2nd option to Saturday instead of Lilja.

is Lilja
even going to be back next year? He’s having a 3rd surgery on it and there was some speculation that he might be done for his career…

Which is why I’ve been saying the Colts need to draft at least one OT in the first 2 rounds.

trust me
I’m on that bus with you. I’d be okay with 2 OTs. You and I could block as well as Diem on some plays (sorry, Ryan) and Ugoh has taken all of Tarik Glenn’s bad qualities (false starts) and none of his good qualities (top 5 LT in the league). He’s way too inconsistent and too penalty prone. I also think he’s too light and would actually make a better guard than tackle. He rarely shines in the passing game, but can be brilliant in the run game, and its not like any of the current interior linemen on the roster are making me wet myself with excitement, so… well… :)

If Tarik wouldn't have retired Ugoh would have played guard
like Tarik did in his first season in Indy.

yah, but
I’m sayin maybe Tony should be there permanently… or maybe TE. Or Punter. I’m not sure. Maybe the Colts could start being like a hockey team and Ugoh could be their enforcer. That would be awesome. It might be worth the 15 yard penalties to see the Colts release some inner frustrations. :)

The Colts would have never drafted Ugoh if Tarik didn’t retire.

Tarik retired
6 months after they drafted Ugoh

They knew he was going to retire, that’s why they drafted Ugoh. He had been talking about it for a while after they won the Super Bowl. I remember this like it was yesterday.

There were apparently no indications earlier in the spring that Glenn, the Colts’ first-round choice in the 1997 draft, was thinking of retiring. He participated in the offseason program and was at the team’s mandatory minicamp.

From what I remember
(granted my memory isn’t what it used to be)
Peyton & Co. got the call from Tarik right before training camp. Until then (at least it was reported at the time) nobody knew.

considering it and doing it right before training camp
are two different things. Generally, unless your name is Brett Favre, if you’re going to retire, you do it before its time to report to camp…

So, you’re saying Tarik retired in October?
by KingRichard on Jan 8, 2009 3:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
sorry, it was right before training camp
either way, it was sprung on the Colts. If he had been contemplating it, it would have been rumored or something before then. Peyton and Dungy both said they were surprised about it and Peyton supposedly made more than a few calls to try to get him to change his mind. Howard Mudd displayed some surprise over it, too.
My point is, 4 months or 6 months after the fact, is that Ugoh wasn’t drafted because Tarik had retired (even if they knew he was considering it), although maybe Tarik DID retire because Ugoh was drafted. Probably wouldn’t have left them hanging like that if they had no one else on the roster.

the story I heard was that he was thinking about it (and may have told Polian he was)
then when camp rolled around he was in awful shape and didn’t want to bust his ass all through camp to get to weight just so he could bust his ass playing for months.

Whatever, that was two years ago. I just remember hearing rumors swirling that he was considering it right after the Super Bowl.
by KingRichard on Jan 8, 2009 4:26 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Regardless, Tarik was only 31 at the time but yet Polian went off and traded up in the draft to get a LT. Do you think he did it just for the hell of it? I highly doubt it.
by KingRichard on Jan 8, 2009 4:30 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
He did it because Tarik Glenn had one year left on his contract
and there was talk that he was going to let Glenn walk after that year as opposed to overpaying for a 32/33 year old left tackle.
Whatever, that was two years ago? You said, “I remember this like it was yesterday.” Apparently not. ESPN was surprised, the colts say they were surprised, BBS said he was surprised. I guess you were the only one not surprised, you have to share your source with us one day.

Obviously the I remember this like it was yesterday comment was sarcasm but ok. I’m not going to argue about because it doesn’t matter.

i don't understand why you said anytihng in the first place
I was agreeing with you about drafting OTs, made a comment about thinking Ugoh was a better guard, then you said that they only drafted ugoh because tarik retired, i pointed out factually that tarik retired well after ugoh was drafted and you took offense. I wasn’t attacking you or anything but you get defensive over me saying that he retired after Ugoh was drafted.
I didn’t say you were dumbtarded or that your mom dressed you funny, was just making a factual claim, one that I wish wasn’t true. I actually kind of believe if Tarik never retired, this team would have more than one championship.

I’m not getting defensive, I just could have sworn I heard rumors about Tarik retiring is all. I’m not going to argue about it if I have nothing to support my claim, which I don’t, which is why I don’t want to argue about it. heh
I mean hell I could be wrong, wouldn’t surprise me.

I actually dress my eldest son in bermuda shorts and snow boots, its quite fashionable.
anyhow, I know we got off on the wrong foot over the dungy thing, but for the most part, I’m on most Colts fans’ side. I want the same things they do, and I’m not lookin to get in fights with em, unless they think that refs have no affect on the out come of games or something…………….

Is there an article or something that I can read regarding his 3rd surgery and possible retirement?

Must Sign Saturday
There is no other option. I don’t think he’d try to break the bank with us. He wants to play here and retire here.
by TouchdownMonkey on Jan 8, 2009 11:11 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
He would have to sign for damn close to the league minimum for them to even consider it. I don’t see it happening. You don’t draft 3 centers and then re-sign the 30+ center who just missed time with two injuries the next year.
by willyduer on Jan 9, 2009 12:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Gotta agree here
I would like the Colts to resign him, but it seems like they may not. I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with Lilja or Pollak at center over Richard, too. You never know what they might do.

Bill, please for the love of god don’t over pay Kelvin like the Giants did with Corey Websters 8.5 million a year contract with a bunch of ensenatives.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. Hayden has always been my favorite Colts because he came from Illinios. And I honestly think he is better then Marlin Jackson.
