Peyton Manning thinks Tony Dungy will return to coach the Colts in 2009

From the link: "Archie [Manning] said that Peyton told him that he thinks coach Tony Dungy is coming back. Both Dan and Archie are slightly surprised, because they thought Dungy was leaning toward retirement."

Just reading this made me remember and smile.
apparently they hate Archie in San Diego.

Thanks for including the link, BBS. My day improved a little. ;)

I gotta agree with papa Manning

I’m also amazed that the Colts won 12 games without the ability to run and stop the run.

are you?

I think Polian made a deal with some higher being (above OR below us) that he could go his whole career with the Colts while fielding a team that could do neither and still be successful. Did then Colts win 14 games not being able to stop the run and really not being able to run in short yardage situations?

(slightly tongue in cheek, but its starting to become a patter and if i hear Uncle Bill suggest that RBs need to BYOB one more time, I might have to question my undying love and support for him)

I'm talking about the 2008 Colts, not the past teams

The run defense has always been the Colts’ Achilles heel, but it improved significantly during the 2006 playoffs. However, the Colts’ D isn’t built to hold opponents to 10 first downs and under 300 yds a game, but their are built to make big stops and have the opponent’s offense kick field goals rather than score many touchdowns. I know that and have accepted that, but I do expect the defense to make crucial stops to get off the field and allow the offense to get out there and try to score, something they didn’t do earlier this past season. I also know that the Colts have not and will not be mistaken as a running team as long as Manning’s there, but in the past they were able to average around 100 rush yds a game in previous seasons. Like people always say, “the Colts run the ball to set up the pass .” , but when they can’t run; the Colts are limited on plays and can’t use plays that they’ve been extremely successful on like the play action fake which works when you have a decent running game, something the 2008 Colts didn’t have.

Run D

The run D was good in 2006 playoffs and 2007. It was actually pretty good this year too, especially after Antonio Johnson was brought in. Don’t let the Sproles 20 yard TD skew things for you. The defense was worn down by then, and the penalties were backbreakers.

I liked the Johnson signing as much as anyone, but

The rush defenes didn’t look all that great against the lions and the jaguars, and, I’m sorry, ‘the jaguars always play the colts tough’ isn’t a reason, its an excuse. If every shotgun-draw play gets 10 yards, find a way to defend it better. And the 3rd down conversion rate is still way too high. I think you’re looking at things way too rosey. There are definite problems with the Colts, and rush defense is one of them.

Instert this guy into the d-line, and you will no longer have problems stopping the rush:

That’s to scale tbh.

Seriously though. With Terrence Cody and Antonio Johnson playing side by side on the d-line…wow. They’d be better than the Williams sisters.

rofl

I think we might get too many men on the field with that guy.

But I’m fine with having two fatasses in teh middle. Look at the havoc Freeney and Mathis can wreak with below average DTs. Maybe Mookie just wore down down the stretch, maybe they just need one more big guy to rotate with him (don’t understand why they hate Muir so much). Whatever the case, if Dungy is coming back, its clear to me his job should be to work with polian to fix both lines. Gotta win up front first.

Ok I love him

I watched a “Meet Terrence Cody” video on YouTube and at 6’5" 360 pounds, I’ll call him “cute.” Seems humble, dedicated, and genuine. LOVE HIM!

Yeah I read that earlier, sucks but whatcha gonna do? Well then I’ll take one of the following: B.J. Raji, Peria Jerry, or Sen’Derrick Marks plz.

by KingRichard on Jan 8, 2009 9:58 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

really?

Personally, I don’t want BJ Raji at all. Jerry is also huge but lightyears ahead talent-wise when compared to Raji. I also like Marks. #95 for the Gators made a huge fourth down play that was one of the biggest plays I’ve seen in college all year. I want to see more of whoever that is. He could be what the Colts need or at least someone who makes plays like that.

From what I’ve seen of Raji, he seems to be a beast. Regadless, I’m not going to complain if any of these guys are drafted, I just hope one of them is.

maybe he'll see the money and go to cash in

or like Andre Smith (allegedly) get caught with an agent.

I never follow college talent too much

what round are all of these DTs you guys are drooling over projected in? I still think fixing the OL should be priority over the DL, are we talkin 2nd/3rd round types? I’d be okay with first round OT (assuming its not a reach) and a 2nd round DT.

I'm just starting to get into draft mode

I watched 13 college games. I can tell you a lot about Shonn Greene and Mitch King and some about some of the high profile Big Ten players, but everything else I have to go find other peoples opinions on.

yar, im the same

If Polian wasn’t already such a big 10 guy, he could hire me as a big ten scout. Too bad, I’ll have to continue to earn my living talking on internet message boards.

it's been waaaay too long since I've mentioned how much I want the Colts to draft Mitch King

I know he plays the deepest position on our D (undertackle, but could probably do NT in pass rushing situations or a big run stopping DE), but he’s a monster.

he's listed as 6'3" 280

and with Iowa’s strength program that’s not impossible (Robert Gallery came to Iowa as a lanky TE), but he’s probably closer to the 265 he was listed at last year. He started out as a 240lb LB.

Sen’Derrick Marks and Peria Jerry are all first round picks, easily the two best DTs in the draft.

That's not true

The Tampa 2 with the right people is actually pretty good against the run. Tampa Bay, Chicago, and definitely Minnesota this year are either top tier run stopping defenses now or have been in the past. Yes this defense definitely caters towards higher scoring offenses and is better when playing ahead, but we’ve had a prejudice placed on our defense for awhile when the truth is, aside from this year, we haven’t been elite, but we haven’t been bad. We consistently finished around 15th in rush defense after Dungy started working on the defense and that’s not bad considering the problems we’ve had year after year on the line. Everytime we start turning into a team that can stop the run, the guy that helped do that ends up having some ridiculous, unexpected, or stupid happen to them. Even this year after we got Johnson and starting working him in we averaged 91 yards per game counting from the Ravens game. And that’s including the 178 by Slaton. And they only gave up 82 to Sproles until the TD in OT.

The defense we fielded that game was the healthiest it’s been all season even without Brackett, Jackson, and I think someone else was out. And they looked like a high caliber defense like they did in 2007. We had the first overall defense in 2005 and 2007. Seriously, we did. I know it’s shocking but yeah, that was us.
