Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

The reigning NFL MVP keeps on chugging. From the Colts.com article: "For the month, Manning completed 66-of-96 passes (68.8 percent) for 983 yards and 7 TDs with two interceptions for a 117.7 passer rating. Manning passed for over 300 yards in each outing, his second career streak of three consecutive 300+-yard games."

I'm hoping he'll be AFC player of the month in January and February as well.

4th MVP is coming

He’s got just as good of stats as Drew Brees if not better. The Colts are a better team than the Saints. If he can keep this up he will easily get #4. We are so lucky to have him here.

I had a thought

My first thought was, ‘Ok, this year Peyton is just going to say, I’m MVP, BITCHES, from the start’… Then I remembered what the media was orgasming over all weekend.

Not Peyton.
Not the Lions.
Not even the Patriots!

Favre, if he stays healthy and the vikings win their division, will be the MVP.

Eh,

I don’t know. They were freaking out over that ridiculous final play (which was impressive). I doubt he can do that every week which would make people start focusing on his stats and contributions. That’s what would make Favre’s MVP case fall apart.

whats your opinion based on?

do you not remember that the media was slobbering over favre last year until he imploded?

You like links. I like something to supoort opinions. The media loves fawning over Favre, they did it last year, and the year before. Each time Favre has reverted to his old self and made people remember (realize) that while he’st he MVP he’s also the MDP. I said that if he can go 16 games without a blowup the media will trip over themselves falling in love again, and Peter King will try to renew their vows.

by SpazMo on Oct 2, 2009 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

not to mention

that until the jacksonville game where peyton was perfect, the media was trying to give the MVP to favre, kurt warner, and drew brees (on an 8-8 team) and maybe haynesworth

Favre will never last for 16 games.

Yes he will

He will put himself above the team and play hurt when it would be better for him to sit out. He’s a selfish SOB who doesn’t deserve anything.

My dislike for Favre is rivaling

my dislike for Brady. And I used to really like him. It bums me out.

HOWEVER, I will be watching Monday night hoping to see a couple of INTs. You KNOW he isn’t going to continue to be a “game manager” for long. Its only a matter of time before his “gunslinging” ways return. BWHAHAHAHAHA

wait, so if Peyton wins #4, that means that he is without a doubt behind Tom Brady as far as greatness right? I mean after all Tom has a cleft chin, and has knocked up a super model… that makes him a great QB right? I mean better than Manning’s 4 MVP’s, right?

Apparently they like to spread it around. I don’t see how he won it only once during the 2004 campaign and not at all during the 13-0 stretch of 2005

Fun fact:

The last three times he’s won AFC Offensive Player of the Month, he has won the MVP, won the MVP, and won the Super Bowl (respectively)

Good omen.

Favre is NOT

even close to being an MVP. He was very pedestrian in the first two games of the year for the Vikings where All Day Peterson went buck wild…..and then in the first game where Peterson falters, Favre is average at best. Sure, he threw a heck of a game winning throw…..but so did Carson Palmer that week…

Bottom line here is that no serious person is going to consider Favre an MVP candidate unless the Vikings go on a 14-2 or 15-1 run for the year. Considering the only good team the Vikings have played is the 49ers, I’m not so impressed.

Manning and Brees are your only real candidates at this point, with perhaps Phillip Rivers as a Dark Horse. Don’t like the guy but I cant deny his ability. Brady could be in the mix if he was able to repeat what Manning did last year after an injury, dominate a season, and so forth…

by DevilsReject on Oct 2, 2009 9:47 AM EDT reply actions

Well said

Although I think that 3 games into the season is a little early for MVP talk.

I agree that Favre isnt an MVP...

However, Chad Pennington was your runner up last year. A quarterback that was voluntarily taken off the field for, what, 10 plays a game? Would Brees, Brady, Manning, heck, even a rookie like Stafford or Sanchez be taken off the field without injury?

If last year proved one thing its that taking sacks and fumbling the ball is better for a quarterback than being aggressive and throwing an interception down the field – in the eyes of the media. You see, its much easier to read: Warner, Kurt: 378 of 589, 4388 yards, 32 touchdowns 10 interceptions (these numbers are completely made up) and go, wow! What a great TD/Turnover ratio, and look at all those yards he gained! And completely ignore the 32 sacks and 10 fumbles he gives up at the same time.

It seems like Manning is a victim of his own greatness. If he’s not putting up 4000 30 10 seasons, he’s having a ‘down year’, and couldn’t possibly be the MVP. I agree that its way too early to start these talks seriously (but that hasnt stopped the media from doing it), but I just think its going to take an absolutely amazing season from Manning for the AP to be willing to give him a record 4th MVP.

Remember, this turned into an award that was basically awarded to the RB or QB that broke some sort of record, regardless of circumstance. I think you could point to 2007 and say that was Mannings second best performance ever (behind last years). 2006, was up there, as well. People in the media don’t factor in number of drives per game into his greatness.
