All – I work for SB Nation and just wanted to apologize that for this particular campaign. We do not allow pop ups, non user initiated audio or other intrusive elements but this one slipped through the cracks and we promise to do better in the future. We try to create an environment where readers and brands thrive but the user experience is not compromised. We screwed up on this one and apologize for any inconvenience."
Kyle Ragsdale, SB Nation VP of Business Affairs and Finance. Kyle was nice enough to respond to nmbrthdy's FanPost titled SBNation on the verge of driving me away. The post was about how some ads on the site bothering readers. Special thanks to Kyle for taking the time to respond to our community. As I often say, SB Nation doesn't just throw crap ads up there and not care about how they affects readers.

User-intiated audio?
Cause I’m looking at the front page RIGHT NOW and there’s an add that laughs at me whenever I mouse over it. Does an inadvertent mouse-over count as “user-initiated”?
For reference, I’m accessing the site from Germany, and the ad is “Machen Sie den Todestest” (Take the Death Test), and it’s been annoying me for months now.

Actually
Having ran my own web design firm for a couple of years and being experienced in web marketing, a mouse over is indeed “user initiated”. Non user-initiated ads are ones that play onLoad and instead of waiting for the user to show some interest in hearing the ad. Be fricking glad you don’t have the dumb ads that say loudly “You have won a free iPhone!” everytime the page loads. THAT’s annoying. SBNation does a classy job with their advertising for a large network that has no premium services to differentiate their income streams. In my mind, besides obvious mistakes like the ad referenced in the original fanpost, the only exception would have been the eye-searing ads that had all the CBS analysts giving very disturbing looks – and you couldn’t scroll away from them. But besides that, we should be happy.
And good on SBNation to reply directly to this sort of criticism from one their readers.
I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

Excellent response from SB Nation.
This is exactly how a company builds loyalty among it’s users/readers. They are certainly showing that they care.
Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.
