Tim Jennings, time to give this guy a break
For most of his career Tim Jennings has been a favorite whipping boy for Colts fans. It seemed that any and all problems with the secondary can be attributed to TJ. If the Colts gave up a big play, it must have been TJ’s fault. If the Colts lost a game it must have been TJ’s fault, hell if we could we would blame this guy for all the worlds’ problems.
He has been burnt and has given up some big plays, he has been picked on by opposing QB’s, there is no arguing that, but he’s a CB and those guys get burnt and give up big plays, it happens it’s part of being on the island that is an NFL CB. Champ Bailey, Darrel Green, Ronny Lott, all are considered great shutdown corners, and all of them have been burnt and given up long TD’s it’s part of the job.
This year, Tim is quietly having a good year. He has been playing quite a bit and playing well. He is second on the team with 22 tackles and first on the team with 3 passes defended, and hasn’t given up many big plays. As injuries in the secondary mount, the coaches call on him as the next man up, and he keeps responding by playing solid football.
He was drafted by the colts in the 2nd round of the 2006 draft, he has battled injuries during the early part of his career, and that might have stunted his development. He struggled last year, but seems to have learned a lot from those struggles and is now playing good football. The only thing left is for the hard core Colts fans to recognize that he is no longer the goat and is now playing like a 2nd round draft pick. So Colts fans, give this guy some love.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

this will be his test hope he passes

right
He has never been tested before. Not by Randy Moss, not by Chris Chambers or Vincent Jackson, not by Megatron, and not by Larry Fitzgerald.
But Kenny Britt? Now THAT’s his major test.
Sorry. I don’t want to pretend he’s a shut down corner or anything, or that he didn’t get beaten badly by the above guys (most notably Chambers and Jackson, who made him look retarded), but the guy has faced about a dozen stiffer tests than whatever the Titans will throw at him tomorrow night.

A little OT,
but Megatron has to be one of the best nicknames for a player yet. Just perfect.
More on topic, I completely agree with you. If the Titans’ infamously bad receivers are Jennings’ true test, I’d like to know what those other guys are.

But who’s Megatron. I heard that name before on this site, but I can remember who you all are referring to?

WR Calvin Johnson of the Lions.
From Wikipedia:
Fellow teammate Roy Williams nicknamed Johnson “Megatron”, due to his large hands being similar to that of the towering Decepticon. Williams later changed the name to “Bolt” after Jamaican sprinting phenom Usain Bolt, comparing the two athletes’ similar height and running abilities.
Megatron is a 10x better nickname than Bolt.
I don’t judge you for that. There’s tons of stuff like that that I don’t know.

Thanks, Cass
I thought it was something I should’ve been known, but thanks for reassuring that it was okay that I didn’t know Johnson’s nickname. Megatron is way better than Bolt. I just hope “The Sheriff” doesn’t catch on for Peyton. :-)

Don't worry,
it won’t. I think most sane people realized that it was an insanely stupid (and unnecessary) nickname about 5 minutes after that MNF game with the Titans ended.

He's playing a lot better than last year.
From what I’ve seen and the stats, he looks pretty productive this year, plus the coaches keep putting him in there, so I don’t think he is getting cut any time soon. I’m gonna side with the coaches and say he doesn’t deserve the fan beat downs. Keep drinking the hater-ade all you want, but, this year he doesn’t deserve it, he’s playing well and the stats prove it.
Antoine Bethea 26 tackles 2 passes defended
Tim Jennings 22 tackles 3 passes defended
Melvin Bullitt 21 tackles 0 passes defended
Gary brackett 17 tackles 0 passes defended
Tyjuan Hagler 16 tackles 2 passes defended
Jerraud Powers 16 tackles 2 passes defended
Robert Mathis 15 tackles 1 pass defended
Jacob Lacey 13 tackles 2 passes defended
Freddy Keiaho 11 tackles 0 passs defended

passes defensed has a similar major issue
it’s successes listed without number of attempts or context/detail of the success.
CB A has 6 tackles and 2 passes defensed
CB B has 1 tackle and no passes defensed.
Who did better?
Adding more info
CB A is Dason Javid and had 12 passes thrown at him. 10 were completed for 4 TDs and 6 long gains.
CB B is Anamdi Nsamugha and had no passes thrown at him, his tackle came in run support.
Pretty different picture now.
As for the eye test, it doesn’t sway many people when a player scored vastly different on their eye test of them.

I absolutely agree with your comments on these stats, Shake...
…but while they indicate nothing to conclude Jennings is having a good year, they certainly do not preclude the possibility.
I know I should probably hit FO for this, but is there any statistical measure that can give even a vague sense for whether a cornerback is playing well or not? I suppose the average # of receptions made by the WRs the CB covers would be one such measure, but even that is skewed by game situations and the ability of surrounding DBs to effectively cover their guys. Have you seen anything more concrete?

There was a drive by the Seahawks
In the middle of the game, and Tim Jennings was abused, giving up every first down on that drive. They weren’t big plays, but if it went for a first, Tim Jennings was the corner responsible for it.
Tackles are largely irrelevant, since QBs are always throwing to his side, and Jennings is good at making the tackle and not giving up the extra yardage, but seeing as it’s always a first down he gives up, how much can we celebrate the lack of extra yardage?
I’ll admit, he looks better this year than he did last year, but his marginal improvement is still not enough for me to get on this guy’s side. I never got the hate towards Keiaho or Charlie Johnson, but this is one I can fully understand.

He has refused his assent to laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his governors to pass laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of representation in the legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved representative houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the legislative powers, incapable of annihilation, have returned to the people at large for their exercise; the state remaining in the meantime exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.
He has endeavored to prevent the population of these states; for that purpose obstructing the laws for naturalization of foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migration hither, and raising the conditions of new appropriations of lands.
He has obstructed the administration of justice, by refusing his assent to laws for establishing judiciary powers.
He has made judges dependent on his will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.
He has erected a multitude of new offices, and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.
He has kept among us, in times of peace, standing armies without the consent of our legislature.
He has affected to render the military independent of and superior to civil power.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his assent to their acts of pretended legislation:
For quartering large bodies of armed troops among us:
For protecting them, by mock trial, from punishment for any murders which they should commit on the inhabitants of these states:
For cutting off our trade with all parts of the world:
For imposing taxes on us without our consent:
For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of trial by jury:
For transporting us beyond seas to be tried for pretended offenses:
For abolishing the free system of English laws in a neighboring province, establishing therein an arbitrary government, and enlarging its boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule in these colonies:
For taking away our charters, abolishing our most valuable laws, and altering fundamentally the forms of our governments:
For suspending our own legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with power to legislate for us in all cases whatsoever.
He has abdicated government here, by declaring us out of his protection and waging war against us.
He has plundered our seas, ravaged our coasts, burned our towns, and destroyed the lives of our people.
He is at this time transporting large armies of foreign mercenaries to complete the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow citizens taken captive on the high seas to bear arms against their country, to become the executioners of their friends and brethren, or to fall themselves by their hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavored to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare, is undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A prince, whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

I like the post and i agree jennings gets too much abuse. I’ll trust the coaches on this, they get paid to watch the practices, review the game film and coach the man. whatever stats, we as fans dig up, there are always intangibles and variables we just dont get. As fans we have the right to bitch and second guess. But the coaches and the gm have been doing this way longer than any of us. Im not a “Moneyball” fan, stats just dont tell the whole truth. If Jennings is as bad as some say then why is he still with the team? he must be doing something right . Or have some embarrassing photos of Polian! lol. I wish nothing but the best for jennings, if he succeeds then that means the team is and after all thats what really counts, not who is right and who is wrong.

Most fans expect him to be Deion Sanders
Every team is going to complete a bunch of passes on 3rd and 3. That’s just how it is. There are holes in zones and WRs have the advantage on any decently-designed comeback route.
Jennings isn’t perfect, but he’s 4th on our depth chart. He’s not supposed to be.
That said, he does a decent job following the rules and doing his job. People who get on him for giving too much cushion or allowing completions in front of him don’t understand the defense or his assignment. They’re just looking for a scapegoat.
He’s not the fastest to react, but he’s not a terrible football player. If anything, get mad at the defensive play calls for being too conservative. But be careful what you wish for. For every big jump that Antoine Winfield gets (the pick on Rodgers last week where he beat the WR to the comeback route, even on a low and outside throw), he also gets burned deep for a TD. You have to take the good with the bad. As annoying as it is to watch the Colts yield 48% of 3rd downs, they still manage to keep the other teams out of the end zone, and that’s what’s important. As the DTs improve, maybe there won’t ever need to be 8 in the box for running plays, which would give Tim a lot more safety help, which would let him be more aggressive. Who knows. For now, I’m just content to let him do his thing and know that once Kelvin and Marlin get healthy we won’t have to see him out there. At least he’s not Ratliff or Jason David.

someone else pointed this out on this board like 2 weeks ago
the problem with Tim Jennings is that he’s depth, not a starter. He’s a fine 4th CB, he’s not a #1/#2, which is what he’s being forced to do now because of injuries. For the people saying, ‘the coaches know better’, yea, they do, and thats why Jennings isn’t the starter. I always had the same feeling for Jason David. I felt he would have been a perfectly fine #3, he had some good attributes, but if he was every in man or cover 3, it was a long completion.
With as good as the pass rush has been this year, the CBs don’t have to be great, they just have to be able to stay with someone deep, or make the tackle on the first hit if they go to a short route. Jennings isn’t really able to do that consistently, Powers has shown he can.
Last, much like with the Sanders debate, or Addai talk, or CJ v TU, etc… everyone on these boards (well, unless they are from a titans or pats or steelers board) wants every player on the colts to play like a HOFer. If Tim Jennings came out tomorrow and played like Nahmdi Asamwah (phonetic spelling, imo) would anyone complain? No. But we know our players better than most. We see them every week. Tim Jennings is Tim Jennings. Its the same reason no one cried when the aforementioned Jason David left. We know toast when we see it.

Well, Jennings has been bringing down his receiver with the first hit
the problem is the receiver already has the first down at that point.
I don’t really like Jennings, but here’s one thing I liked about him: he doesn’t get burned in deep routes.

I am not a big jennings fan
I am posting this after the tennesee game….but I think he is the weekest db we have. While people may argue that he tries hard and competes, i don’t think anyone can legitimately say he is better than any of the the injured starters and possibly some of the reserves. Thats the main reason he is on the hot seat is because every qb we play targets him which is evident by darn near every completed pass….I saw the same thing with Jason David when he was on the team. Your secondary is only as good as your weakest link and he is the weakest link. no I am not a football guru nor claim to be one but it just seems that many completed passed seem to fall to the guy TJ is covering. I will say he is a solid tackler and rarely lets his man get more yards after the catch…but thats about it in the way of positive. Peyton and our recievers always pick on the rookies but I wonder who he would pick on if he was playing against the colts D…..It very well might not be a rookie…Oh and I also hope ugoh was hurt for his sake.
