Around the Horn respect
Ever since week 1, it seems that like usual, the media is virtually ignoring the Colts. They are not badmouthing us by any means, and when they do speak, it is usually pretty positive, but the team is rarely a topic of interest on any show. When talking undefeateds, the teams discussed with the most interest it seems are the Giants, Vikings, and Saints, followed by the Colts. Around the Horn on ESPN today was no different. The main NFL stories they spoke of were Den/NE and Bal/Cin, which are games that should be discussed, but once again no Colts or Peyton Manning mention. None of this is that big of a deal since no one is exactly undermining what the Colts are doing, but you get my point.
Then Jay Mariotti, who was the "winner" today used his time to talk about Peyton Manning. A synopsis of what he said was, "Peyton Manning throws for 309 yds and 3 TDs and no one mentions it. He slides past Tarkenton for third all time on TD list and no one mentions it. He has taken two no name young receivers in Collie and Garcon and turned them into playmakers, and no one mentions it. He could drag me and Woody Paige off the street and throw us TDs. He is one of the best, if not THE best QB ever and no one wants to talk about him. It's crazy." Tony Reali then made a quick joke saying, "Who's job is it to talk about him again?" indicating people in the media, like Marriotti, are responsible for such things.
Now, I like cheering for a team who is under the radar in terms of media coverage and don't care that we are not a huge media crush (but get really bent out of shape when disrespected), but I like seeing things like this. I generally do not like Mariotti at all, but it was good to see some much deserved love thrown Peyton's way, especially with the media mainly focused on guys like Favre.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

He’s (kind of) right…It’s spotlighting guys like Favre and Vick and Even Michael Crabtree.
we have been on national TV 3 of the first 5 weeks, so it’s not underexposure.

only way we get attention in the media is if we play a primetime game…..(Miami, Zona, Titans) that’s the “big stage” according to the Eastern Seaboard Programming Network.

it seems like Manning is quietly working towards his record-setting 4th mvp. That’s all “P” does, is work.

so were the CAPS
intentional there or what? trying to make a statement maybe?
The way our defense is set up, it puts me in situations where I'm one-on-one in making tackles on running backs. When I go into it, I think I am going to win. It really doesn't matter the size, height, weight, whatever. I'm not afraid of putting my body in there." - Bob Sanders

If anyone actually bothers to look at the opponents of the other 4 undefeated teams,
they will see that they have all played a schedule that is arguably weaker than that of the Colts, except maybe the Saints and Brocos, but theirs aren’t all that tough, either.
It just seems like people always try to find something to dog the Colts about. I don’t know if it’s jealousy because we have Peyton or what.

No-Name?
Not sure if that’s a direct quote from Mariotti referring to Collie as a “no-name” receiver, but it’s not the first reference I’ve heard along those lines. You have to love it when people who are supposedly paid to follow sports refer to the leading college wide receiver from a year ago (and an All-American) as “no-name.”

He's a rookie
Almost all rookie receivers are by default no names.

didnt have any kind of impact till this year. So no one outside of Colts Country knew who he was

Even though I put it in quotes
That wasn’t word for word what he said, and he may not have said “no name.” He referred to both as young, inexperienced guys who Peyton has turned into stars in the absence of Harrison and Gonzo. His point was that it didn’t matter who the receivers are when Peyton manning is throwing them the ball. He’ll make any receiver a stud.

i completely agree the colts are always under the radar tho ppl are used to the fact that they win during the season i don’t mind being under the radar i’d rather be winning and no one talk about than lose and have everyone saying brady is better even it would have nothing with them losing and i also like how all of a sudden ppl really aren’t talking shit about manning like they did in the past and it seems ppl have finally excepted that he just might be better than the all mighty system QB that is tom brady

I would rather have us under the radar now
We were in the center of media spotlight for years (2003-2005), and it was annoying. We were kind of like what the Pats are now: an overhyped media machine not nearly as good as the media creates them to be.

The Pats
are losing a little media steam now that they look like they usually have for the past decade. I’d say the attention is on the Giants and Vikings.
And we may have been pretty hyped 2003-2005, but no team had as much media attention on them as the ‘07 Patriots. From week 1, that is all anyone talked about in the media world. And NOTHING negative was ever said about them. Even when they were exposed as proven cheaters, the media not only went easy on them, they were supporting them. The Colts never experienced a media lovefest like that, nor has any team since I’ve been around.

What are you going to say about the Colts?
The problem isn’t that nobody notices, it’s that nobody can think of anything new to say. What are you going to talk about?
We could say that Peyton is probably the most talented QB ever to play the game— oh wait, we’ve been saying that for five years now.
Hm, well there’s that new head coach— except we’ve been expecting him for the last two years.
How about Marvin Harrison leaving— what’s that? Oh, he was pretty much already gone last year.
Defense not as good as the offense but with flashes of brilliance? Mediocre running game? Complete lack of drama? It’s all the same story the Colts have turned in for each of their last six 12+ win seasons. They’re football’s version of the 1990s Atlanta Braves (with just as many championships to show for it, unfortunately).
Last year they got some talk when it looked like they would actually LOSE more than four games, but then they caught fire and it was back to business as usual.
The thing about selling news is that it has to be, well, new. I’m fine if nobody has anything new to say about the Colts because that means they’re still “just” winning games.
Never approach a vast undertaking with a half-vast plan.

Nothing new to say?
I definitely prefer cheering for a team of little media interest as opposed to an over talked about team as well (it makes it that much sweeter), but you say there’s nothing “new” to talk about?
How’s this….all off season, the only mention of the Colts is that they were falling apart. The Moore/Mudd situation, the loss of Harrison and Dungy, etc. all had media heads saying the window was closed and predicting 9-7 or 10-6 seasons. Since the season began, Manning is off to his best start ever, has passed Tarkenton on the all time TD list to move into top 3, he has proven that he is the best QB not only w/o Harrison, but w/o Harrison’s replacement-Gonzo, and he has made two unknown young receivers into excellent players. Not to mention the defense has been fantastic even without 3-4 STARTERS all season and we are off to a very impressive 5-0 start. I’d say there is a HELL of a lot of “new” things to talk about seeing as how the “old” news in preseason was that we were finished.
I could care less that the media somewhat ignores us in favor of bigger market squads like NY, but you can’t tell me that they are not newsworthy. That is just absurd.

If this season finishes up like it's starting...
Someone should compile a video of all the pre-season predictions for the Colts. Make sure that Faulk is included for saying that Jacksonville closed the window a couple of years ago, and that Tennessee sealed it shut last year.

And Faulk said the Colts are a shambles, don't forget that one.
He is eating his words now. I just wish he would go on national tv and recant his stupidity. But that won’t happen.

Faulk is just pissy
that Edge turned out to be an upgrade over him. I seriously think that his favorite part about being an “analyst” is yelling at the Colts for hurting his feelings. Get over it, dude.
