Colts need more SB Titles

Came across a very well written article by Matt Snyder from NFL Fanhouse which looked at the performance of the Colts during the Manning era. As the title of the article suggests, Synder states that in order for the Colts, and Manning, to be immortalized as a truly great team and quarterback, they need to win at least one more title. I tend to agree with him.

Star-divide

Snyder begins by highlighting the Colt's outstanding regular season record over the past 6/7 years and how it compares to other great teams:

That's right, after beginning this season 5-0, the Manning-era Colts are now 80-21 since the beginning of 2003. The '70s Steelers went 87-27-1 from 1972-1979. From 1981-1998, the 49ers were always pretty stout, but they never put together a six-plus season run where they played close to .800 ball like the current Colts (they came closest from 1987-1992 when they went 75-20). The '90s Cowboys went 70-20 in their best stretch. From 2001-2007, the Patriots went 86-26. Shula's '70s Dolphins, at 67-16-1, check in as the best competition.

However regular season records are not remembered, rings are. Years from now, rightly or wrongly, people will look back on this team and judge it based on how many titles it won. As Matt says:

Should the Manning-era Colts not win another Super Bowl here in the next few years, they will be just another team who won a Super Bowl, instead of being considered among the immortal groups in the NFL

It is simply how teams are judged. Look at New England for example: the Patriots are seen by the majority of people (or at least the majority of the media) as the best team of the decade because they have won the most Super Bowl titles. I would argue that the Steelers are the best team of the decade (mostly because they didn't cheat to win their rings) but I agree with the use of Super Bowl titles as a measure of a teams success. Super Bowls are the sole reason player's play the game. I therefore completely agree with Snyder, that in order for the this team to be viewed as a truly great team, they need at least one more title.

Unfortunately players, like teams, are often judge based on the number of rings they have. The most common pro-Brady argument in the Manning-Brady debate is that Tom has won more titles then Peyton and is therefore a better quarterback. Obviously anyone with half a brain knows that Super Bowls are won by teams, not quarterbacks alone and therefore should only be used to judge teams. However this is not the case. As Matt states Peyton will be also be judged based on the number of titles he wins (or doesn't win):

It all starts with Manning, who is easily one of the top-10 quarterbacks of all-time. In fact, you could make an argument for the best ever (and his stats will show it before he retires). The only argument you can make against him? The one I'm talking about right now: "he's only won one Super Bowl!"

To a certain extent I agree with him. As a Colts fan (who pride's himself on being as unbias as possible, in other words not a complete homer) I believe Peyton Manning will retire as the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time), regardless of how many titles he wins. He can make all the throws, reads defenses better than anyone, works harder then anyone, makes those around him better, leads (and at times carries) his team, and is truly humble by nature. He is simply the best. But as Snyder says, in order for Manning to be viewed by everyone, as undeniably the best QB of all time, he needs to win at least one more title. If not there will always be that argument: "He only won one Super Bowl". Matt Snyder sums it up best:

In order for the Manning-era Colts (or even Polian-era Colts, if you prefer) to be truly appreciated, they need to bring home the hardware one more time. If they are really serious about being a transcendent team, they'll do it at least twice -- just for good measure.

After all, that is what a truly immortal team would do.

He's right.

While regular season wins are nice...

It is the superbowl that matters. The Yankees pride themselves on saying if they don’t win the World Series, it was a bad year – I think the Colts need to adopt the same attitude.

I do not think Manning needs another ring to be considered the GOAT. He has one. Marino is constantly talked about as one of the greatest and he has ZERO. However, I do wish Manning could get one or two more and take back the single season TD record!

But the TEAM does need at least one more for history to remember them as the juggernaut that they really are!

For the Colts to be considered a truly great team,

another title is probably necessary.
But for Peyton to be considered the greatest QB to ever play the game, IT’S ALREADY A DONE DEAL.

I picked 2 or more for two reasons:

1. I’m greedy.

2. I want there to be no doubt in anyone’s mind that the Colts are the greatest team of this decade and arguably one of the greatest organizations in the history of the NFL during Manning’s era.

I agree

It’ll be great to finally silence the critics’ only argument against Manning when hes sporting his five rings…

I have no problem with saying that the Colts need 1 more ring to be considered a great team. Key word being “team”. I think most people will agree that we have not always fielded the strongest team during the playoffs for a number of reasons (injuries/talent/etc.). But what bothers me is when people use rings to define whether or not Peyton is a truly great quarterback.

I’m glad that he’s finally putting that argument to rest this season with what will hopefully become his 4th MVP performance, but that argument should have been laid to rest years ago after the Colts won the Super Bowl.

As the above states, truly great teams win multiple championships. Truly great players guide their teams to multiple postseason bids. Manning has done that. Now it’s time for the rest of the guys to match him.

To me...

they will be one of the greatest teams ever. Others will always disagree, because of various reasons that they will bring up.

I won’t argue about it, because “the greatest” is a debatable topic to begin with. I can live with knowing that I am right, and they are wrong. :D

Go Colts!

Manning vs. The Team

Manning will always be in the conversations of Best QB in the NFL. Regardless of what he does in the future, he’s already earned his place. How this Colts “team” in the Manning era will be remembered is what the author was questioning, and he’s right that it has to do with rings. If you leave the Patriots out of it, would you even consider the Steelers as a team of the decade candidate without their 2 rings? It’s what gets them a seat at the table.

Keep the faith!

If you re-read what I wrote:

I agree with the use of Super Bowl titles as a measure of a teams success

Don’t want to get into an argument over which team should be team of the decade (which hasn’t even finished yet) and I do respect the Patriots for what they achieved, just that in my opinion the Steelers were better, although we should wait until the decade is in fact over before making a final judgement.

In regards to Manning I agree that he will always be in the conversation but I believe he needs at least 1 more ring to undeniably be the greatest.

I agree

We shoulda had SB wins in ‘03-’05 if it weren’t for the Cheatriots and Liquored up Kicker. Depressing.

Here’s hoping we get #2 this year.

For this team to be immortalized

they probably need one more title.

However, as for Manning, he needs no more to increase his standing.

BTW, I that guy picked the wrong 49ers run, in the six years between 1989-1994 they were 76-20, making at least the NFC title game 5 times, and winning two super bowls. That is probably the best 6 year run, that and the Steelers winning 4 in 6 years.

Colts win the Super Bowl this year

I called it before, I’m calling it again. Nobody can stop Manning this year. He’ll go 11 on 1 if he has to.

Manning's greatness? Rings are irrelevant here.

Team greatness? Rings are an important measure. This decade has been the Patriots and the Steelers atop that list.

And the Steelers over the course of the super bowl years are at the top.

by coltsfanawalt on Oct 15, 2009 7:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with the concensus

Manning doesn’t need another ring, the team does.
But what about “the greatest team in any one year” vs. “the greatest team in a several year span”.
I’m really greedy.
If the Colts could do what only the Dolphins have done, and the Patriots failed to do, go undefeated all the way through the Super Bowl, they would achieve football immortality, and own it all.
And I really believe this team could do it.

by HoosierHorseman on Oct 15, 2009 8:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I'd like to believe that.

I just think our schedule has been fairly weak so far. It will never get brutal, though. We could do it. I just learned from watching the Patriots a couple years back. It’s hard to do.

let's not talk about undefeated

just remember ’05 and ’07 (Pats). It is really, really hard.

This just in...

Sports writer uses rings to justify envy over Manning. Sorry, but it doesn’t matter. If and when Peyton and the Colts win another ring, the Brady has 3 argument will just get louder. No how many we win, East Coast press will claim we need one more.

I agree

If Manning breaks the passing yards record and leads his team to a record of 19-0, the debate would be over. Even though it has been over since the end of Super Bowl XLII.
