Possible Colts Trade for Cleveland's Josh Cribbs?
Rotoworld is reporting via the Palm Beach Post that the Colts have shown interest in trading for the Browns kick returner/wide receiver Joshua Cribbs.
First off, there is no way this trade goes through. Colts trades rarely happen and whenever it leaks that we might be trading for somebody, it usually always fizzles. That being said, I kind of hope we do get him. It would just make the Colts elite in every aspect of the game.
So what do you think? Should we trade for him or not?

Don't know a lot about him
but have heard many complaints about Simpson here. Maybe this could be a real
boost to the team. I voted absolutely.

They need a QB
How about Sorgi or Painter? Both are in “like new” condition, only dropped once.
by MarshallPlan on Oct 15, 2009 6:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I really think that the Colts like Painter
and I think he’s a project player for them…I doubt that the Colts would get rid of Painter. And Sorgi’s contract is up this year. IMO they are gonna let Sorgi walk this year. BUT I heard Peyton say in an interview that he would like for “Sorg” to be there as long as he was there so they may retain him who knows?
The way our defense is set up, it puts me in situations where I'm one-on-one in making tackles on running backs. When I go into it, I think I am going to win. It really doesn't matter the size, height, weight, whatever. I'm not afraid of putting my body in there." - Bob Sanders

as far as a QB id rather see sorgi go
for a few reasons. one he deserves after all this time go get a chance at a starting spot and also i think the colts feel painter has more upside. However, sorgi already nows the offense very well and painter doesn’t so it would make a hard and big change that i dont really think we or they want right now. also painter we know wont get his chance till manning retires most likely so the best bet would probably be to trade him and get something for him while we can

Cribbs is a dynamite returner, and I think he's covered kicks/punts too
According to FO through just 5 games the Browns are 9 points above average on punt returns.
9 points above average in combined returns last year and an insane 40 points in 2007.

my opinion
If they dont ask for too much, I would love to acquire Cribbs. We have never had a dynamic special teams Weapon, He would be the first and would make our offense and defense that much more dangerous as we would be controlling field position
by metal_militia on Oct 15, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
But what about his contract? According to the article in the Palm Beach Post he would require a new contract and I’m not sure how much room the Colts have under the salary cap.

Exactly!
That’s one of the major reasons why I don’t think it happens. You know he is going to be looking for a Roscoe Parrish or Devin Hester overpaying contract. Don’t think the Colts would do it. It would probably be the first.

I think it would be work it. Imagine if we decide to run it in the SuperBowl (when we make it). There is no way a defense can watch game footage of Peyton Manning all week and then plan for the wildcat.

He certainly could help our Special Teams (though, let’s be honest, we REALLY need to work on our blocking), but this strikes me as more unlikely to go through than last year’s attempted trade for John McCargo.

Receivers
Would anyone think it was insane to trade either Garcon straight up for Cribbs? Look, we have unreal depth at WR. Garcon is good, but we’ve already talked about what happens with the WR opposite Reggie when Gonzalez returns.
For that kind of threat in the return game, I could see trading for Garcon. Hey, I love Garcon, he’s incredible/powerful/dynamitc, but it is something to consider.

another situation in which I would cry uncontrollably
Polian seemed to be HUGE on Garçon before the season started and we’ve now seen a few games to justify his position. Perhaps the talking-up was his way to improve his (Garçon’s) trade value, but I suspect he would rather keep him.

Right now we are a winning team. Giving up on someone like Huit Cinq, who has proven to do very well in our offense, for a boost on special teams, seems like a move we should save until we actually have a need to change our game.

as many as 5 teams are intrested
i think it will take a 3rd rounder and one of our QBs maybe sorgi to lift the browns eyebrow , anything less than that wont make it happen, he is that good.

We should.
If the price it right we should definately trade for this guy, he is a playmaker! This will upgrade our kick return game a ton. This guy is elusive can fly and no off the field problems. I don’t think Colts will give up whatever the Browns want but this guy is a stud!

Here's what I think
1. This team has very few needs. Right guard, right tackle, and kick returner. Cribbs covers the third.
2. This upcoming draft is looking pretty weak. Not as bad as 2008, but not as good as 2009. I think that the Colts should try and get the most talent out of their draft picks.
3. Cribbs is a great returner. He may be the best around today. The Colts have started out with bad field position all year. Think how much more prolific this offense could be if they were starting at the 35 instead of 20.
4. I would gladly part with the second round pick and a backup for Josh Cribbs. No question at all. It may not even take a 2nd rounder. Look at what they got for Braylon Edwards. If the Colts could get one of the best returners in the game for a third and fifth round pick, I would be very happy. Draft a good right tackle this upcoming draft (like Sam Young). That’s all I want. Move Diem back inside to RG like what Shake has been preaching for a while. Look at the 2008 draft. All of those guys suck. I’ll take my chances with Josh Cribbs over another weak draft class.

Sigh
Jason LaCanfora is reporting that the Dolphins, Chiefs, Raiders, Jaguars and 49ers have also shown interest in Cribbs.
From what I remember, both the 49ers and the Chiefs have a lot of cap room, so could probably have less of a problem absorbing him than we would. However, I don’t know what any of the other teams would have in terms of trade that would make sense.
Anyone else know more about what each of the possible trade teams might be able / willing to offer? Gawd I would love for this to happen.

Baskett is a player I actually forgot about
with them shipping Edwards to the Jets they need a good reciever…so maybe they would take Sorgi and Baskett without having to throw out a draft pick…but if they decline then hell give them the draft pick and throw simpson in there as a little extra something

Remember
The Browns traded away Braylon Edwards for Chansi Stuckey, a special teamer and I think a 2nd and 4th draft pick. That is their former first round pick and star of the team for two draft picks, a decent wide receiver, and a nobody. I think that a second rounder would be enough for Cribbs without even having to include Sorgi or Painter.

The way our defense is set up, it puts me in situations where I'm one-on-one in making tackles on running backs. When I go into it, I think I am going to win. It really doesn't matter the size, height, weight, whatever. I'm not afraid of putting my body in there." - Bob Sanders

Although, having a serious threat in the special teams return game
is quite intriguing. Yes, after giving it some more thought, it would probably be better to have Cribbs than Baskett.

Anam Schefter on twitter.
Once again, if we get two notable trades before Tuesday’s deadline, it’ll be a lot. But it sure is fun to imagine.

If you are getting Cribbs
It would be wonderful if you could take him before Sunday and with him Cleveland’s only chance of winning.

if the browns dont want to trade Cribbs
i still think this team needs a better KR, why not offer for Clifton Smith from the bucs, they suck and clifton fumble the last game at the end but hes a good returner ranks 6th in the league (Cribbs is 8th) with 28.1 avg , and what about a RT or RG from the rams like Richie Incognito or Jason Smith, the team suck too but the team ranks 12th in rushing.

they really are not better than us at all in rush defense so i dont know about that. and are
those averages just based on this season cause id rather know how he has been the last couple years also to see if he is better?

boooo
Gonzo is a legit #2 WR, you don’t trade that for a returnman/gadget/#4 WR

This is not going to happen because...
WRs are more valuable that kick returners. The Colts have at least 4 guys who are better WRs than Cribbs, so he would never see the field at WR. However, there are other teams in the league for whom Cribbs would start at both WR and KR. Therefore, he is worth more to some other team than he is to us. I wouldn’t give up more than a 6th rounder for someone who is exclusively a KR. A WR/KR might be worth a 3rd round pick to someone else.

They could offer Baskett and Matthews, and a draft pick,
though I don’t know why they’d want Matthews.
We won’t need either of them if we make this trade and have Gonzo back.
And everyone knows if anyone could develop Cribbs as a reciever (to be all he can be) it’s Manning and Caldwell. Working with them might be be very attractive to Cribbs, and whoever represents him.

Oesher has a blurb up on Cribbs
The Palm Beach Post is saying that Kansas City and Oakland have inquired about Cribbs, and Miami and Indianapolis have been mentioned.
Also, Cribbs has three years left on a six-year, $6.7 million contract.
That’s affordable, isn’t it? And who would want to play for Oakland or Kansas City if they had another choice?
Miami may be a rising star, but Cribbs could help take us to the Super Bowl.
Keep your fingers crossed.

I guess it really depends on how much those other teams could offer for him
Then again, what players do KC and Oakland have to trade with? They do have high draft picks, of course.
