Johnson is listed at 6-feet-2, 296 pounds, but Polian said he was about 15-to-20 pounds over that and "couldn't really take it off."
"Jim Caldwell about three weeks ago called him in and essentially said to him, 'Ed, you have to pick it up – the production, the hustle, the effort and the ability to lose the weight has to be improved,''' Polian said Monday, adding that Caldwell told Johnson, "Otherwise, we're going to have to make a change.'''
Added Polian, "It's directly related to his weight."

i dont think i deserve a tip
i just said he was fat. He didn’t look that fat. I mean, remember corey simon? we let him get away with being like 8 bills and didnt cut him until he just decided to stop playing… Did he look that fat to others? I’m still not really buying all of this, because you would think you’d punish him (via being inactive one week) or something, first, and no one has picked him up. You’d think the jets or chargers would give someone that fat a look-see?

He wasn't orca fat...
but he was obviously larger than he was in 07. It was the first thing I noticed. And the first thing I noticed when I watched the Tennessee game again was how he was the slowest man on the field by a HUGE margin. Like several steps slower than Mookie, who is roughly the same size and as the nose would be expected to be the slowest.

Another quote
Most importantly, we’re sticking with the standard of performance that (end) Robert Mathis has set, that (end) Dwight Freeney has set, that (safety) Bob Sanders has set, that (cornerback) Kelvin Hayden has set, that (cornerback) Marlin Jackson has set, that (linebacker) Gary Brackett has set. We’re not going to lower that simply because we feel like a player has the potential to be better. And Ed does. Ed has the potential to be a good player.
This is one of the many reasons the Colts are consistently among the elite teams in the league.
"The critics can criticize but we're the crème dele crème,
Me and P-Dela we blend what they're calling the standard,
Still standing while they're screaming when will it end?"

I buy it.
Polian’s speech and Oesher’s analysis make a lot of sense. It was an attitude problem. The staff determined that he wasn’t really trying to lose weight and get into better shape.
This is bad news because it means he really was good, like we thought, and losing him really is going to hurt. Hopefully Moala can keep improving and compensate.
Or maybe we’ll make a trade for a DL today!
