Luke Links: The "Yep, Denver is for real" Edition

Trade deadline is about six hours away. Bill Polian says "NO!" to any possibility of a trade. Um, yeah. He kind of says that every year, and for two of the last three years, the Colts have made a significant trade just prior to the deadline.
That said, here be the linkage:
- One more time folks- The Colts let Ed Johnson go because he is fat and lazy. This time, Bill Polian himself confirms it (via John Oehser). Ed was confronted twice from Week One to Week Five about his lack of effort and his weight. He didn't improve both, and the defensive coaches asked for a change. They got it. Ed was cut.
- OK, time to man up and admit we were wrong; the Denver Broncos are indeed for real. They are 6-0 and, barring a collapse of epic proportions, they will make the playoffs by winning their division. Josh McDaniels was very smart to hire Mike Nolan has his defensive coordinator. Other than the Colts, the Broncos are the best team in the AFC right now.
- 18to88 is annoyed with Bob Kravitz again. We could create an entire blog devoted to how much Bob annoys people with his shotty reporting, bad writing, and back-handed complimenets to a team he clearly do not like covering. But, after about two days, the blog would get boring.
- Turf Show Times gives us an update on Rams injuries.
- Colts kick coverage is very much improved thanks to Pat McAfee's leg and Russ Purnell's absence.
- Paul Kuharsky, AFC South blogger and all-around good guy, is now a dad. We trust Paul will raise his son to love and root for the Colts even though Paul makes his home in Nashville. We also hope Paul did not subject his son to the horror show the Titans put on against the Patriots last weekend.
- Lounging Pass ranks the QBs, with Big P on top.
- The Chiefs traded Tank Tyler to the Panthers, effectively ended any speculation that Gelnn dorsey will get traded.

Denver is for real.
So is their defense. Yet Peyton owns the Broncos. And I mean OWNS them. The last 4 matchups, not counting the season finale in 2004 when he was only on the field for 2 plays due to having the playoff seeding already secured, look like this:
2003 Wild Card Playoffs: 22/26 (84.6%) 377 yards, 5 TDs, 158.3 Passer Rating
2004 Wild Card Playoffs: 27/33 (81.8%) 458 yards, 4 TDs, 1 int., 145.7 Passer Rating
Week 8 2006: 32/39 (82.1%) 345 yards, 3 TDs, 132.3 Passer Rating
Week 4 2007: 20/27 (74.1%) 193 yards, 3 TDs, 136.3 Passer Rating
So to recap. The last five games against Denver, Manning has at least had a passer rating over 130, completed at least 74% of his passes, had over 300 yards in all but one game, and has had at least three touchdown passes. It will be close, but Manning will dominate the Broncos. Again.

But this isn’t the same Broncos team, now, is it? They’ve made a lot of changes. I do think we will win and I don’t think their secondary will keep us from scoring, but I think it’s silly to compare our past results with the current team and their current personnel.

True enough
New coaches and new personnel. But Mike Nolan used to DC at Baltimore and Manning has been stomping Baltimore since he got into the league.

I understand that.
But with the way Manning is playing, expecting similar results isn’t asking too much. I might have jumped the gun a little bit though. Sorry, but that’s just the fan in me. Should be a good game. Orton will have to play like he did against New England, or better, to pull it off though.

Broncos fan here
Not to spark a heated discussion, since the Colts are a good bit better than the Chargers, but Philip Rivers’ numbers against the Broncos were pretty good too. And those were all in the last 3 years, I don’t know how relevant Peyton’s performance against the 2003 Broncos is, since we have 0 returning defensive players from 2003.
Anyway, look forward to a great game in December.

At the rate these teams are going
.. that december game could be for a number 1 spot in the AFC… and should have have a lot of playoff implications.
here’s to the chargers missing the playoffs this year. Every year this team had done worse under Norv…

yea this doesn't matter at all anymore. but good research.
completely different team, different players, different coaches, different attitude, and their 6-0 so they have different swagger. This might be one of the best games we play all year.

Past performance is no indicator of future returns
Look, folks, as an Indy fan, I’d want the Colts to beat anyone in a matchup, including Denver. But I’m not about to say it’s in the bag. Remember, back before Manning was drafted, quite a few teams had Indy’s number, too. And up until ‘06, it seemed as though New England had Indy’s playoff number.
Things change. If Denver had not dramatically reshaped itself, I’d be more willing to base future predictions on what Indy has done up there in the past. But that’s a potentially erroneous mindset to take now; this year’s team has little in common with Broncos teams from the past.
Yes, I want Indianapolis to win if these two meet. But I’m not about to make predictions based on previous games, not with a revamped Broncos team involved.

Dude, NE had Indy's # loooooooonnnnnnnggggggg before Brady/Manning.
Even when we were rivals for the bottom of the AFC East, we would be their win, and the Jets would be ours. It’s the real reason I’ve always hated the Pats. Brady was just another back up who made his bones off of us.

The Patriots have released receiver Joey Galloway.
it was confirmed this morning, maybe a trade on the works there

I heard on the ESPN...
that the pats were looking to trade him to the Ravens, but just cut him after not playing him for 3 games. I saw him in that bills-game-that-shall-not-be-mentioned and he was dropping passes left and right. Doesn’t seem worth a trade to me…

Remember how Joey Galloway and Fred Taylor
were smart moves that would make the Pats unstoppable?
I think Colts fans were the only ones to laugh at that one.

Exactly...
and here I was hoping that Galloway would be with the Pats Nov. 15th. Bummer.

Sometimes it makes you wonder
if those big network mo-tards even watch the NFL at all. I remember they said Joey Galloway was going to be this season’s big FA pickup. Apparently he was going to play against single coverage opposite Moss and anhilate defenses.

Before he got bunged up. I guess that’s why NE have about 7 RBs on their roster. Shame none of them are any good.

the broncos are better off with Orton than Cutler.
I was thinking this would happen LAST year. I guess it just took a change for them to really reach full potential, but the potential was there.
Kyle Orton is just a smarter QB than cutler, maybe not more gifted, but MUCH smarter with his decisions. That was the big thing last year with the Broncos were the Red Zone turnovers, Orton doesn’t do that.
The signing of Brian Dawkins has been greatly downplayed. This may have been one of the biggest pickups of the offseason by any team. He’s helped turn that Defense with Mike Nolan.

I suspect that Orton is much less of a diva, too
I think that makes a HUGE difference in what is likely to be the “team first” attitude that McDaniels brings. I just threw up in my mouth a little bit saying something positive about an ex-New Englander.
How can you not love a team that does this?
by LovinBlue on Oct 20, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
haha yea
Orton is a great team guy. And he doesn’t put himself in positions to make mistakes. He knows his physical limits unlike Cutler who thinks he can throw into ANY window no matter how small. Orton just hands the ball off when he needs to and makes smart throws when he HAS to. Now the Broncos can go back to being a run first team that made them so successful in the 90s

I think that's an overreaction
What I do think is that Orton is a much better QB for the scheme McDaniels has implemented there – run first, screens, lots of high percentage plays, very little downfield action – although, of course, has he only implemented that sort of scheme because of the QB Orton is?
I think the Broncos and Bears can be pretty happy with the deal – Cutler’s looking better every week and he’s starting to get some nice chemistry with his receivers. If the Bears had a running game, they’d be pretty dangerous…
The one person I definitely underestimated was Josh McDaniels. I was completely wrong about him.
by eltharion_doa on Oct 20, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
chicken or egg?
It’s a bit of both. Orton has made some big plays to Marshall too, once in a while.
Mostly it’s just that a first time coach wants a QB he is comfortable with, and Orton is much more comfortable than a loose cannon with attitude and arrogance problems who makes stupid decisions. Cutler couldn’t be controlled, at least not by a first year coach, and his dumbass decisions could but them in bad spots. McDaniels didn’t want that. He went with the known and more predictable quantity, which meant he could then build a slightly less exciting but more reliable offense around Orton.
The real key has been the defense, though. The Broncos always scored points last year too. I can’t remember who had the theory – a FO commenter, I think – that it’s somewhat predictable that an “offensive genius” coach (McDaniels) arrives and suddenly the defense improves. He attributes this to the coach being set in his ways on offense, and perhaps a bit stubborn, but more hands-off on defense. In this case, he turned things over to Nolan and stayed the hell out of the way. Nolan made a few good decisions – such as actually starting their best front 7 player (Dumervil) – and is doing great things with them. One could say the same about opposite type coaches too. Even Dungy, although he had Peyton Manning, so that might not count.
I think there’s some merit to that but really it’s just that they got a good new DC, started Dumervil, and have a healthy Champ Bailey. They got a gift in Dawkins. Philly let him go a year too early. They could really use him, too, as their safeties have shown they’re not ready.

Fili Moala
I love his attitude right now. I would much rather have a guy like him playing, even if he struggles, than a guy as lazy and apathetic as Ed.

Absolutely got to love his fire
Indy Star: Are you ready to play?
Moala: “Hell yeah”.
He might start off struggling, but I think we’ll see big things out of him. Remember, people projected him as first-round talent his junior year, and coaches love his work ethic. Hard workers with a lot of talent tend to do pretty well in this league.

And Denver is definitely real...
real lucky. They’ve won a couple squeakers on absolute flukes and just stomped a hugely overrated San Diego team. I’ll crown them when they’ve clinched their joke of a division.

that's the whole thing...
that’s exactly what they WERENT doing last year. They were losing those close games, EVERY TIME, a lot of times because of cutler. Cutler is gone, Orton is in, and he doesn’t throw those red zone picks. That’s what makes them for real, they are a much smarter football team. I just wish they would have kept Shanahan.

They will
That’s even more of a cupcake division this year than last and they probably only need to win three more games to clinch.
Whether or not they’ll do anything in the AFC overall is another question, but they’ll probably get home field advantage (along with us) unless New England roll the rest of their schedule. Nobody else in the AFC is consistent enough to challenge for a bye.
