Patriots' moves spark speculation Posted by Mike Florio on October 20, 2009 11:58 AM ET So the New England Patriots have cut four players in less than 24 hours.
The moves have sparked all sorts of speculation.
The release of Tully Banta-Cain, Joey Galloway, Eric Alexander, and Michael Matthews opens up $2.87 million in nonprorated 2009 salary cap space, which in theory allows the Patriots to absorb a player with a full-season base salary of $2.87 million. (Because all players were signed through 2009 only, there's no cap acceleration arising from cutting them.)
Some are speculating that the Patriots are making a play for Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman.
Coincidentally, his full-season base salary for 2009 is $2.972 million.
Another possibility could be Rams running back Steven Jackson (WEEI radio apparently is throwing that one around), but Jackson's full-season base salary if $5.5 million. Also, the Rams reportedly aren't inclined to move him.
I will update if anything big happens in the AFC..

So maybe it is a salary cap move after all, we will see if they go for a big fish.
Update:
NO news about a big trade , well it seems this thread should just expire like the trade deadline just did. :)

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: The national anthem of Greece has 158 verses. Wonder how long it would take to sing that before a game.

HMM
There is no way they get Steven Jackson one is they don’t need him they have like 3 runningbacks and THEY DON’T RUN THE BALL. Rams are bad, desperate but not stupid Spagnuolo wants to win at some point. Now Merriman would be a nice move for them but they why did they waste their money on Seau…

Excuse me but the quote in your title is not from Sun-tzu. According to this guy in my history class, Tupac is responsible for coining that phrase.
You are welcome.

Receiver?
Joey Galloway wasn’t what they thought he would be and they could use a Jabar Gaffney like receiver. My nightmare is that they make a massive trade for Steve Smith from Carolina. It seems like they need more of a pass rush though.
One Pats fan remarked that they have lots of rookies and others coming off of the PUP list and will need to make roster spots. Hmmm. I can’t imagine they go after Merriman. He hasn’t done anything since he stopped eating bowls of roids for breakfast. Then again, with Jamal Williams out, his pass rushing opportunities have probably been significantly reduced.
I’m more concerned with what the Colts are going to do. Ruud would be fantastic; another guard or offensive lineman would be great as well. Anything to pick up the running game.

many peaople are speculating
some want them to go after Jackson,so they could trade Maroney straight up to Seattle for Dieon Branch.
maybe is just that they are making room for the players to come off of PUP. Brandon Tate and Mike LeVoir. and meybe Banta-Cain and Alexander are going to be restructured.

Can't trade Maroney
With Fred Taylor and Sammy Morris out, we’re down to Laurence Maroney and BenJarvus Green-Ellis to get the bulk of carries. The Banta-Cain and Alexander cuts were procedural – they were released but are being brought back with contract extensions.
No way do I want Merriman and as much as I loved Branch while he was here – things have changed. He is injury prone and expensive. Tate’s a rookie but there’s hope that he can help out the offense. Otherwise, that “third WR” position will be filled by Sam Aiken, or a combination of the TEs.
Keep the faith!

What about Faulk?

Faulk is the best...
…reliable, dependable, hasn’t slowed down at all when he’s on the field. But at 33, he’s not an every down back. Belichick doesn’t want to wear him out – we need the younger legs for that.
Keep the faith!

Cutting Banta-Cain would make no sense
Him and Wilfork are their D line now.
