I'm sure we all were thinking that he "could" play, but hearing Caldwell actually explicitly state that Sanders could make his debut is very assuring.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: The national anthem of Greece has 158 verses. Wonder how long it would take to sing that before a game.

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Oct 21, 2009 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I heard about it on sportscenter

they previewed it as “Colts injury news”, and I thought to myself “oh god, who got mysteriously-injured NOW?”

…thankfully, the news was good. :D

I have no emotions anymore about Bob. I hope he plays, plays well, and plays often. BUT he is nearly out of sight, out of mind now.

2nd half?

If the Colts have a huge lead, I bet he plays several plays in 2nd half to get his feet back under him. What do you all think?

by cwill111 on Oct 21, 2009 2:55 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

get him a few plays, then get him out

if we need him against the rams, we are in trouble. any word on how badly marlin “tweaked” his knee? any update on gonzo?

by Matic on Oct 21, 2009 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

so by this logic

we should play hayden a few plays, and then pull him.

also, addai, 2 plays and out.

Manning, don’t want to risk him against the Rams. One series and a cloud of Sorgi.

You need to ease him into action, obviously, he didnt have training camp or preseason, but its a logical fallacy to say we shouldn’t play a heathy player because of the opponent. The sooner you get him in the game and going, the sooner he’s back to 100% – which seems to be what the majority of Colts fans want.

by SpazMo on Oct 21, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

has ...

addai, hayden, or manning missed 50% of their games since they have been on the Colts? did addai, hayden, or manning miss all of training camp and preseason?

i wasn’t saying that because of the opponent, more because of the player. just saying they should be cautious. that’s all. and with the way BOB plays, i doubt he can get to 100% while playing at the same time. i did like your big boy words “logical fallacy”.

GO HORSE!

by Matic on Oct 21, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Manning missed all of training camp and preseason

last year. He didnt get babied, or sat out against ‘easy’ opponents.

Wasn’t using big boy words, btw. Were I trying to sound smart, I would have used dictionary.com. Sanders is a top-3 salaried safety in the history of the NFL, he can either stay healthy and earn his pay or he can’t. I understand he needs to ease himself into playing (he’s not in game shape), but this, ‘we don’t need him vs opponent x’ is incorrect. He’s either a part of the team or he’s not. Freeney risked further injury against the Seahawks and the Titans, he’s part of the team. We’re reaching a crossroads with Bob. If/When he comes back, he’ll need to play at a high level for the rest of the year, injury free, because the team needs to know what to do with Bethea.

by SpazMo on Oct 21, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

completely agree...

we can’t keep bob around at the risk of losing other players. again, i was saying he should be eased in because of his injury history, not because we are playing the rams. we are on the same page here.

by Matic on Oct 21, 2009 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Why

Why does it seem like the coaches and management are babying Sanders so much, when he is just as likely to be injured again whether he is 100% or 85%??

I just don’t understand why it takes so much longer for him to “heal” than everyone else.

Someone please explain.

To Be Honest

I wouldn’t play him in this game because it should be such an easy game. Save him for the Niners.

by Colts Homer on Oct 21, 2009 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

I think it's good timing.

The rams aren’t much of a threat (to say the least), so this sunday’s game could be a perfect opportunity to work Sanders in to our defense.

That way, he’ll be much more prepared and comfortable against San Francisco.

by hahasound on Oct 21, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

That was a nicely indeterminate statement...

… which could go either way. I, too, am in the “believe it when I see it” boat.

As an aside: I wonder what exactly the holdup has been over. The news on his recovery is so vague. I’m curious as to whether the doctors were the ones saying “He’s only demonstrating X percent of strength in that muscle, it’s not yet time”, or if the trainers are saying something similar. Or if the coaches are saying “he’s not cutting/ running/whatever as sharp, it’s not yet time”. In short, I’m wondering what exactly it is about Bob that until lately hasn’t been 100%. Yes, I understand it’s supposed “weakness” in his quadriceps (i.e. “front thigh muscle”), but if you think about it, that’s a pretty vague description. Weakness? As in, he’s only lifting ‘X’ number of lbs from a squat, instead of ‘Y’? Or as in he’s needing an extra tenth of a second to push off laterally?

Meh… I don’t think this answer will come out for a long time, if ever. Took us long enough to find out about Peyton’s injury last year, and he’s a far higher profile player in the news. We may never find this out. Admittedly, if he comes back and doesn’t show any loss in play, everyone’s going to forget all this, and I for one won’t complain. But that doesn’t change the fact that right now, I’m curious, yet cynical about the chances of this ever being answered.

I don’t even understand why it takes so long for him to work out his quad muscle anyways. Isn’t the quad what Freeney injured against Miami and he was back at it the next week?? Why does Bob take so long to heal when it seems that his issue was solved at the end of last season or at least in training camp?

Is this a Polian/Caldwell/doctors issue or just a Bob issue?

"Melissa, it's Ace. I'm in Psychoville and Finkle's the mayor!"

by AceOfSpades on Oct 21, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Completely unrelated, if I remember correctly. Freeney injured his quad; Bob had knee problems that caused his quad to weaken. If I understand correctly, his knee has been fine for awhile, but then his quad wasn’t ready. If the quad is now strong enough to perform, he should be ready to get some playing time.

by nmbrthry on Oct 21, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

My uninformed read on this

is that the docs and trainers are worried that this is Bob’s last chance to return from injury, so they’re doing it right, to the point of being extra conservative. If that means easing him in but that he’ll be available for late games (say, like, in January and beyond), I’m all for it.

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Oct 21, 2009 4:55 PM EDT up reply actions

when you say

“Last chance to return from injury” are you saying, "no more of this 8 off, 8 on’ stuff in the future? If so, I agree, especially, as I said, because they have to decide to pay Bethea or not.

by SpazMo on Oct 21, 2009 5:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Bethea will be a RFA if the cap comes off

so they probably don’t need to decide on an extension yet.

I feel kind of diry

banking on the end of football as we know it to keep Bethea (and wouldnt it affect Jackson, as well?). I’d rather they got a CBA done (one that works, this time, though) and worry about keeping our players under that system.

I didn't think it would, but in the Don Banks(?) article someone linked for me

he said that 2005 draft picks on 5 years deal would be RFAs, I had thought 5 year vets got free agency even without the cap, but maybe not.

by shake n bake on Oct 21, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions

and yea

Ive had the same thoughts you have about the Colts in an uncapped system – new stadium, waiting list on tickets, an owner that spends to the cap every year, so he clearly isnt pinching pennies, a GM that is smart, and a almost 53 guys that they’d want to keep (obviously they need to get younger/better on OL, but other than that, not many wasted roster spots on this years team), I think a non-capped system would really help the colts.

by SpazMo on Oct 21, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yet I shudder to think what

Jerry Jones and Dan Snyder would do in an uncapped league. Heck, you already see what Snyder does in a CAPPED league.

there are a lot of things in place

to prevent them from going hog wild. Uncapped is really a misnomer given the kinds of restrictions in place.

well not if they still suck

No freakin' joke, dude

Snyder makes the Yankees look parsiminous.

Now, this has been said so many times already that it’s become a frikkin’ cliché, but: Synder basically treats his team like a fantasy one. And there’s no bigger demonstration of the difference between playing fantasy football as fantasy and playing it in reality than this.

I bitched in the past about letting players go, but given the success of the Colts in doing this – from Dickerson to Harbaugh, passing Faulk and Edge through till today – and the utter failure of “fantasy” organizations like Snyder’s Redskins, I now can’t help but agree that it’s good to make an organization move on. It’s good for the organization, and if there are cushy landing spots with great paychecks, it can be financially (if not professionally or competetively) all right for players as well.

I guess we have a new truism about modern professional sports: You can equalize the salaries, you can equalize the distribution of talent through draft orders, but you can’t equalize franchises performances. The only way to do that would be to somehow equalize talent of ownership, and I have no idea how that could be accomplished.

and yeah, I hope a CBA gets done this offseason

even though the Colts won’t be in bad shape for an uncapped league. Decent sized market, owner that doesn’t pinch pennies and builds through the draft so the new free agency rules will help rather than hurt.

Different models

Freeney is a fast healing “liquid metal” cyborg developed after Skynet had become fully self-aware. Sanders is an older model, living tissue over a metal skeleton. His wounds take a while to patch.

Both were sent back to our time to crush offenses and devour souls, but due to a quirk of time travel the Freeney model arrived a few years earlier.

Never approach a vast undertaking with a half-vast plan.

the craziest thing about the ladybugs

is in how large of numbers they seem to be dying at once.

Yesterday, I came back from class to find my porch covered with what must have been 300-400 dead ladybugs. There’s probably at least 30-40 dead ones in my apartment alone— and my windows have been shut, for the most part.
