Sanders vs. Bullitt Poll
BBS has written a few articles arguing that Melvin Bullitt deserves to start over Bob Sanders, even if Bob is healthy, because Melvin has performed at a Pro Bowl level while Sanders has been injured and not playing. It seems to me that his idea is that Sanders needs to earn his starting job back on the field, and that earning it in practice is not enough.
I'm curious to know how many people agree with BBS.
There are three schools of thought here, as far as I can see: (a) Sanders needs to earn his job back on the field; (b) Sanders needs to earn his job back in practice; (c) Sanders doesn't need to earn anything, he's Bob Sanders. I've tried to reflect these options in the poll.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

but that's not what BBS is saying.
He says it doesn’t matter what the coaches see. He says Bullitt should start because he’s earned it.

yes i know what bbs is saying and i dont agree. also he states that health and consistance
in the health should play a role but if saunders is healthy and ready go go i have no problem with him starting

Bobzilla is the starter...
I know Bullitt has started more games, but Sanders is the starter. He starts.
Now, I love Bullitt and think he has performed waayy above expectations. I want a way to see them on the field at the same time, personally.
Those two sharing the job is also not a bad idea. Keeps the likelyhood of injuries to each down.

nooo
I think its not fair to lose your job bc of an injury especially if your bob (def player of the year) so what if melvin played great good for him but losing your job bc you lay your heart out and give everything on every play (thats what causes him to be hurt a lot) is not fair to any play especially bobzilla

Remember
how irate people were when Ugoh seemed to shine in training camp, but Johnson was named starter? How’d that work out?
BBS’s thought that Bullitt should start is wrong in my opinion, but it is not ridiculous at all for him to think that. His comment that Sanders is not a great player made his entire post completely lacking in credibility. Anyone who does not think Sanders is a great player needs to have their head examined.

I chose "maybe"
which feels a bit wishy-washy, but it is certain that none of us has all the information. If Bobzilla is healthy and out-performing Bullitt in practice, Bob should start. If Bullitt is also playing ST, then he now gets a bit of a spell from double-duty, and we have a really balanced set of players.
How can you not love a team that does this?
by LovinBlue on Oct 23, 2009 11:59 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I choose NO!!!
I think Sanders is an INCREDIBLE player when hes ON THE FREAKIN FIELD!!! I mean come on guys, 8 consecutive games?? 8??? U cant be an NFL player, Especially a Safety, and only start 8 consecutive games….. I think Bullitt has more than proved himself, and as much as I love Sanders, I think the poll is unneccesary, because i’m like 90% sure Bullitt will be coming in for sanders around week 9 due to Sanders blowing out a knee because of his “wreckless style”

wow your new here I guess
well lets just say when bob comes back on Sunday and knocks Steven Jacksons head off his shoulders you better not jump back on the Bob wagon. Cause us who know who Bob is and how he plays dont have room for your negativity. Bob was the starter when he went down…Bullitt was the backup…Bobs healthy and since he is the starter he plays its really not that hard to understand. Do me a favor…go to youtube and type Bob Sanders in the search box and watch every video on there about Bob. Go see what he does to this defense. Does Bullitt do that? Absolutely not! Now stop freaking hating…its really getting kinda old.
Bob Sanders does not play Hide-and-Seek, He plays HIDE and PRAY-HE-DOES-NOT FIND-YOU!

Bullitt is a pro-bowl caliber safety?
He’s been good, but I think this statement has been thrown around WAY too much lately. When he makes the pro-bowl I’ll call him that, but until then I think it’s just homerism.

Bullitt is the greatest safety to ever play the game
There, I said it.

I really hope you're kidding.
If not, you may need to go into Colts detox.

Point well taken,
But you gotta wonder, if Bullitt would get that kind of recognition if he wasn’t sat everytime Sanders comes back. Just being devils advocate here. I like em both.

Brady got his job back after his injury season
So did Shawne Merriman in San Diego. So did Dwight Freeney after missing time in 2007. Bob deserves this job. He’s the 2007 Defensive Player of the Year!

not just that but even though he has missed time every year
he is still a seasoned veteran who has earned it by his play. his injury history doesn’t even come inot the dicission

There are huge differences between them: They were all better than their backup.
Where’s the public outcry that Marlin Jackson has lost his starting job due to an injury?
Different team, but Willie Parker has lost his starting job due to injury.
Also, do you believe Bob won DPOY in 2007 because of his 2007 play or because of the ‘mysticism’ of the 2006 playoffs?
by SpazMo on Oct 23, 2009 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not the same at all
Those guys don’t have a history of playing, on average, 50% of the games that their team played each season.
I wish people would stop talking about Bob being the 2007 DPOY. That is almost as irritating as media saying the Patriots will win the Super Bowl because either A) they were great in 2007 or B) they won the Super Bowl in 03 and 04.
Live in the now, man. (said in stoned hippie voice).

Brady might not be the best example
since that’s exactly how he got his job in the first place. But he clearly outplayed Bledsoe to become the starter, and, while Bullitt has been great, he hasn’t played like the defensive MVP of the league.

Maybe
But it depends on how you look at it. As time goes on, and we continue to debate the value of Bob Sanders, Bullitt remains a solid player who can be counted on to be on the field every game and play at a high level. Bob plays at a higher level, but since he is only on the field roughly 50% of the time on average, we can look at it the opposite way too.
As great as the BSBD is, it can have an equally negative impact on the team while he is out of the lineup for such long periods at a time and then thrust back into it, usually when the playoffs are right around the corner. I just hope that he can stay healthy so this team, and Bob Sanders himself, can reach its potential and this argument/debate can be over for good.

Yeah but in that time Bob hasn't been playing period...
It is all about perception and how you look at things. If Bob comes back and plays great and can stay healthy I believe everyone will be extremely happy. I hate people bringing up the 2007 DPOY award as that has nothing to do with now. He was excellent in 2007 but that has nothing to do with his play in 2009. What it should really come down to is who gives us the best chance to win on game day. If that is Bob Sanders then I’m all about him starting. If it means Melvin Bullit starting I am all about that.
Honestly I’m not willing to debate about who should start over who as I for one believe that the Colt’s coaching staff will put the best available players on the field. That is good enough for me. Debating Bob Sanders long term viability as a member of the Indianapolis Colts I would be willing to debate however.
by cscott5527 on Oct 23, 2009 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The 2007 DPOY award has everything to do with it.
We saw Bob Sanders at his best, and we don’t know if he’s regressed or not, so until we see Bullitt play at the level that we know Bob can play at, then Bob has to be the starter.
Regardless, it will all work itself out once they get on the field, one way or another.
by Naptime! on Oct 24, 2009 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes but that is assuming that Bob plays at the 2007 level....
which everyone seems to think is a given. I don’t think it is. Until we see him play we won’t know one way or the other. I would love to see Bob come in and play at that level with this defense. I really just don’t see it as a given that he will like everyone else. So until I see him on the field I reserve the right to question whether or not he is still capable of playing at that level because eventually all of these injuries are going to catch up with him and he won’t be able to play at that level.

I voted Yes
but under the condition that Sanders is on the field for a limited number of plays, Bullitt gets a fair shake at playing time and Sanders is no longer in the game towards the end if the game is out of hand.

well he wont be in there for the full game he will only get at max
40% of the reps i would think he is still returning and although he probalby will start doesn’t play a ton. also jsut cause he starts doesn’t even mean he will play in the second play for all we know starting in the NFL is not the same as starting in other sports where it means you will get the most time on the field

I think the poll results tell the majority opinion.
Colts fans say that Sanders should start. I agree. Now we are left to hope he stays healthy.
There are two issues here surrounding Bob Sanders. If someone is particularly a fan of his or a hater of his, they may end up on the resulting side of both issues. Me, I’m split.
Issue one, should the Colts go a different direction than Bob and keep Bullitt. I am not sure on this one. I love me a healthy Bob, but Bullitt is good enough to have confidence in if we, say, traded Bob for something else awesome and needed more than safety depth.
Issue two, should Bob start when healthy. I think the answer to that is “Duh!” He is a beast at the position. While his consistent health, or lack thereof, may merit long term contract considerations, it should have no bearing on the fact that you play him while you have the opportunity. If he’s healthy now, let him shake any rust tomorrow and contribute to our team as the beast he is.
I can’t understand anyone wanting to bench a healthy Bob Sanders, unless his play quality diminishes severely. The next couple weeks or so will reveal that. Bob, however, is a monster. Er, zombie. I am anxious to see him in action again.
