Five Things I Think I Know: Week 7 Edition

Another week against another inferior team, another win. Here are some observations

1.) I think this blowout win was not as good as it appeared to be. They came out hot, but then slumped in between. Several dropped passes, three and outs, and a somewhat lazy defense allowed the rams to stay in the game (although it wasn't really anything to panic about). I guess what im saying is, I expected a score like this, but with Sorgi time coming a lot earlier in the game. There wasn't a lot that was bad, but the few times there was sloppy play need to be cleaned up as the Colts enter the meat of their schedule

2.) I think we still havent shaken off the injury bug, though it is far less sevee than previous years *knock on wood". Im not saying that this roster isn;t as healthy as years past, but today we saw injuries to Brown and Wayne. Wayne returned after suffering a "sprained groin" as they called it on the radio, but he came back and looked ok, so im not that concerned *knock on wood". Brown's looked a bit more serious as he had to warp it in ice, but also looks to be a minor one. Still, its frustrating to see these things happen when you get players back only to have new ones possibly showing up on the injury report. (I know ive already done this twice, but we cant afford anymore damnit! *knock on wood")

3.) I think we are going to show more creativity on defense. With the return of Kelvin Hayden and Bob Sanders, I think the reason the Colts played a sort of vanilla defense, is because Coyer is keeping some things close to the chest. Today seemed more of a test drive for Sanders and Hayden to shake off the rust (which they were early on). I dont think Coyer will be too cute with this defense, however, with Hayden being a better cover guy than Jennings and with Powers and Lacey showing similar abilities to Hayden, I wouldn't be surprised to see more blitzes from Bobzilla and other players, leaving our corners, at times, one on one. (mind you I still love the Tampa 2, so dont go thinking im hoping for the colts to turn into blitzburgh or anything

4.) I think special teams is still an issue that can haunt the Colts. Via 18 to 88, I found this tidbit from the game

Field position.  Indy started at the 10, 22, 4, 14, STL 41, 7, 2, 31, 7, and STL 31.  That's 6 drives starting inside the 15 yard line.

Although the Colts offense is capable of scoring from almost anywhere on the field, the likely hood of getting points from consistently starting inside your own 15 is very unlikely. The Colts must find a way to generate some sort of a decent return game or at least a way to force there opponents to punt from an area that will provide breathing room for the offense.

5.) I think the race in both the AFC East and North are going to be interesting down the stretch. The Steelers have ripped off a few nice wins to nearly tie the Bengals for the lead in the North and the Ravens arent too far behind. While it seems like the Patriots are dominating the East, I wouldn't bury the Dolphins or Jets just yet. The Jets are a little iffy, given that they have a rookie QB, but there D can play, and as for the Dolphins, they played a very good Saints team tough and couldn't manage to put the game away. But as history has shown us, the Dolphins always give the Patriots fits and are normally good for at least one win against their division tyrant.

My Five,

We rushed for 157 yds. WOW!
That TD pass to Dallas was the most the most amazing throw and catch I’ve seen in a long time.
Chad Simpson’s 31yd. rushing TD was a big surprise. Maybe we were wrong about him.
Jacob Lacey did not “over celebrate”, terrible call.
Peyton snapped his 300 yd. game streak, but it didn’t matter, he didnt’ need a 300 yd. game, the Colts were so well balanced we didn’t need to put it all on his arm.
One last thought: Dallas Clark is THE best tight end in the league.

Starting position...

How many of the starts the Colts had inside the 15 were due to good punting and coverage? That just means the D did it’s job and the Rams punter (who should be pretty good due to all the work he gets) did his job. I think there were only 3 kick off returns the whole game and each of them got out passed the 20. While I will admit that the starting position after the kickoffs is still not good, I cannot chalk that up to just bad ST on our part.

My Five

1. I am loving the running game and I hope Brown is ok!
2. I agree completely with our return game (fingers crossed for a big return guy in the draft this year!!!)
3. Miami is scaring a lot of people this year, but still losing!
4. Muir looked sharp today!
5. I am going to have to change my screenname, because 21 is getting on my nerves – I hope it was a play count. But I really love Bullit. Will anyone have a more dramatic change in their Madden rating as Melvin Bullit will next year!!! LOL

The Colts are Really Good, but . . .

Bengals fan here. Your team is looking really awesome and blowing teams away, but I can’t help but look at your schedule and think it’s easy. That doesn;t take away from having a great regular season, but isn;t there the possibility that when the colts face playoff competition they may not be ready for it?

Good luck the rest of the year!

There's always that possibility

but hopefully what it gives the team is (a) continued confidence, and (b) fewer injuries as starters are pulled before the end of blowouts.

Nice win yesterday, btw!

How can you not love a team that does this?

Our up coming schedule:

Houston, New England, Baltimore, Denver,Jax, and Jets.
We’ll be ready!

True Dat

It will be interesting to see what happens.

Good Luck!

the first part of the schedual maybe

but not the coming up schedual as much. But the teams we have beatin are lookin damn good. The Cardinals looked good last night against Eli, the Dolphins are playing great, but cant seem to win a game. So Im bot at all thinking the schedule has been a factor in the Colts play.

True

you would want to get ready for playoff opponents by playing the leagiues best. However, there are so many veterans that have seen it all thta, there experience alone keeps them ready for whats to come

this year in the NFL

either your good or your bad…there really no inbetween this year. Its been a weird year. A lot of undefeated teams and a lot of teams with 0 or 1 win…

This is so true,

It has been a weird year. And a LOT of surprises.
Bengals are looking good.
Titans are looking bad,
New Orleans has a defense.
The Colts are undeafted even though a LOT of people thought for sure we’d be a mess.
A 40 yr. man, has out performed a LOT of much younger guys.
The whole Chicago/Denver trading QB’s.
This is why I love Football.

I think there is a middle ground

which includes CHI, GB, BAL, ATL, PHI, DAL. I just think that the difference between the middle and the top is still sizable. Also, when the middle ground teams play each other, somehow those games are boring (like ATL and DAL yesterday).

False.

Creaming bad teams is a much better indicator of playoff success than beating good teams.

Check it out here.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: This video right here has produced one of my favorite lines ever. It was so awesome that there has been 2 sequels. One where you must put a banana in your ear, and another where you must grab their tongues. Purely awesome.

That is an interesting article

In that case I’m glad that the Bengals crushed Chicago!

strange but true

we barely beat all those good teams last year then took a header in the playoffs

This is true.

Barely beating good teams seems to be more a factor of luck than actually being better than the other team, while destroying bad teams shows without a doubt who the better team is. That seems to be the crux of the article, and the stats fully back it up.

It’s one of those cases where perception and reality don’t even come close to lining up.
