I know I'm a homer, so just wanted to get some other opinions about who has been the best tight end in the AFC this season.  And I am just talking about this season, wasn't comparing career stats on these guys.  Colts fans were going to ban me for voicing this argument on their blog, so I decided to make my first fanpost on BRB.

kinda of a dumb idea cause basically heres hows its gonna turn out

Colts-Clark wins
Texans-Daniels wins
Steelers-Miller wins
Chargers-Gates wins

Post on sites that arent a team of one of the featured players….that would give you the best results

I love Dallas...

and he is the best receiving TE in football…but he is not the best blocker. There is more to TE than just catching the ball…but all aside…PRO BOWL!!!!!

If there’s anything that all those other TEs are better than Dallas is at… it’s blocking.

Oh no!

Wow congrats

You’ve got the third best TE in the AFC.

Must be exciting to be a Texan fan. Maybe next year he’ll be second best, won’t that be something?

And that guy on the Raiders is pretty good, I’d probably pick him over Daniels too, Zach Miller.

And actually Heath Miller is pretty decent, so forget what I said.

I'd like to see more data

Need targets per game, targets as a proportion of total offense and sacks/hurries/TFL numbers given up by whiffed blocks.

Without it, I’m going homer and picking Clark.

by eltharion_doa on Oct 27, 2009 2:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Alright let's do this right...

1. As already stated by everyone above with a brain, you are NOT going to get unbiased results by polling teams whose tight end is in the polling.
(Ex.: “So-And-So is obviously the best TE in football because he plays for my team and since I am a winner and I only back winners, then by the Transitive Property So-And-So is a winner and is therefore the winner of this poll.”)

2. You are not going to get unbiased opinions from teams who are in the same division as any of the candidates in this poll.
(Ex. 1: "I hate So-And-So’s guts because he plays for our division rivals and always makes our defense look like a pack of drunken hillbillies stumbling around in the dark looking for their lost coon-hound ‘Cletus’, therefore, I would sooner set my ass-hair on fire than vote for him.
Ex. 2: “So-And-So, our division rivals TE, regularly beats on us like orphans at a Catholic monastery, and since I know we’re awesome then the only logical explanation is that he is the best fucking TE to ever walk in cleats. He gets my face-saving vote.”)

3. You are not going to get an unbiased opinion from inter-division rivals either, such as between the Colts and the Pats or the Steelers and the Pats, for much the same reasons as stated in point #2.
(Ex.: Pats Fan: “Gawd, I hate those douchebag Colts and Stealers! They’s always a takin’ what is rightfully owas’ as the best fans in the facking universe! I would rather stick my cawk in a gawdamn wood-chippa’ than vote for they’ra guy!”)

4. You’re not going to get an informed opinion from any NFC fans do to lack of familiarity with the candidates.
(Ex.: NFC Fan #1: “Hey, who do you think the best TE in the AFC is, buddy?”
NFC Fan #2: “What the hell is the AFC?”)

Conclusion: Poll the remaining AFC East teams (Bills, Jets, Dolphins). They have little-to-no dog in this fight and would be the closest thing you’re going to get to an unbiased and informed opinion. Hell, we’ll even give you the Pats. Go ahead and ask ‘em.
To make it truly fair, though, you need to change that Coltsbanishment crap in the body.
Unless, that is, you’re afraid of a fair fight?

by peytonsurdaddy on Oct 27, 2009 3:36 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

"What the hell is the AFC?"

Classic (Well, not really, but it was really good.).

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: This video right here has produced one of my favorite lines ever. It was so awesome that there has been 2 sequels. One where you must put a banana in your ear, and another where you must grab their tongues. Purely awesome.

by Cassieper on Oct 27, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

in my personal opinion...

clark may be one of the “smartest” TE’s in the league. you have to be, in order to be in this offense, with it’s telephone book of plays.
having said that, i will still take OD if we were choosing sides. he’s fast, great hands, and has a nose for the endzone, and first downs. can’t comment on the others, as i haven’t seen them play.

Include the whole picture..

Clark has an 81% catch rate to Daniels 70%

Daniels has 1 fumbles, Clark has 0

Clark and Daniels have almost identical yardage and completion numbers, Daniels has been targetted 17% more than Clark.

Stats are great when you sort of pick and choose which stats you share. Owen Daniels has had 2 or 3 nice games in a row.

Dallas Clark is a great player.

by SpazMo on Oct 27, 2009 7:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I tried posting a better set of stats

but the numbers kept coming out all jumbled. The whole picture includes Daniels being alot more physical than Clark IMO.

Also,

For those that care Daniels has also been the best TE by DYAR this year. Clark is 2nd, Gates is 3rd. Miller is down there, but in the AFC he trails only Watson and Scheffler who are targeted much less often.

Wisdom can not be cultivated through ignorance of information.

the DYAR difference..

Daniels – 124
Clark – 119
Gates – 105

There is a big difference between 2nd and 3rd, but not 1st and 2nd. Like I said, Owen Daniels has had a good set of games, but Clark is the better TE and more consistent.

As for your ‘Daniels being a lot more physical’, I’m not sure how you quantify that. They don’t take Dallas Clark out of the game in running situations, and he’s a much better blocker than most people give him credit for.

by SpazMo on Oct 27, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

also

Enjoy it while it lasts, since Owen Daniels will be on a different team next year.

by SpazMo on Oct 27, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

and since Clark has played one less game and has a higher DVOA

a slight DYAR edge isn’t much of an endorsement.

I don't agree with the stats.

But I did follow the guys link explaining them and took the time to read it. And FO says there are factors that they can’t account for in those statistics, besides the fact that the numbers are only for 7 weeks.
Some teams have had bye weeks and some haven’t, bad QB play can make a reciever rate worse than they are. Those stats say that Kevin Walter is more valuable per play than Reggie Wayne, but I don’t believe that. As I’m sure Colt fans don’t believe it either.

I can't believe I'm the first to mention

That Clark and Gates have put up similar numbers to Daniels with ONE LESS GAME.

by slash196 on Oct 28, 2009 9:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I just think most of us (of course its a Colts blog)

Owen Daniels doesn’t really have a dog in this fight. Is he a good tight end, definitely, does he have the receiving abilities of Gates and Clark? No. What about the blocking abilities of Miller? Negative. I think Daniels has the potential to be something special soon, just not now. His statistics are so high because he gets targeted so much compared to the others. He has some efficiency issues.

The other 3 are pretty special TEs in their own way and I think it depends on what you value as a TE. Of course we all value what our TEs excel at. However, Daniels does all things above average and nothing very very well. My opinion of course. That’s why these posts aren’t getting too much activity, everyone thinks that their TE is most valuable at what they do and therefore there isn’t much of an argument to have.

Daniels has also played one more game than Dallas

As regards the stats you posted, Daniels had played 7 games, Clark had played 6.
You have to account for that.
So not only does Dallas have a better completion %, he has more Yards Per Game.
He also has a longer reception than Daniels (80 yds.).

Now that Dallas has played HIS 7th game, he has more yards than Daniels had in his 7 games, and a much higher YAC.

You really have nothing to justify your claim that Daniels is better except homerism.

Dallas gets the nod because he has been putting up numbers like that consistently for years.

by HoosierHorseman on Nov 5, 2009 8:29 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Go to ESPN>NFL>Stats> recieving

for authentic stats.
Now, after Clark’s 7 games and Daniels 7 (and a fraction) games played;

Clark is ranked 7th in the League among all receivers,

Daniels is 13th.
