Pierre and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad, day
Pierre Garcon had a rough Sunday. He caused a lot of frustration in the gamethreads and the computers agree. He rated out as their least valuable WR of the week, turning 8 targets into just 3 catches (one of which he fumbled and another ended a yard short of the sticks on 3rd down). His best play of the day was drawing a 43 yard DPI call, but it came right after being flagged for interference himself (which may not even be factored into DVOA's negative assessment of his day).

Well that settles it...
he is NOT driving my future kids to school for a day.
Go Colts!

One bad game. Big deal. Yes, it’s a letdown. But I’ll only be concerned if it becomes a trend.

he looked bad like that in preseason too
I’ll be happy when Gonzo is back

Yeah, I remember that...
… and I pointed it out in a couple of forums. But he shows a lot of upside too. So the ultimate question is, which direction will he end up going? Even considering yesterday, I still think he’ll improve.
If he doesn’t, I’ll revise. But I’ll need a seasons worth of game viewing under my belt before I make that decision.

I'm still excited about Frenchy
I think it just shows that he isn’t quite there yet. He’ll probably still get some time as a deep threat/screen guy with Gonzo back while he works on his game.

And yes, I'll be happy when Gonzo's back too.
Yes, I still consider him the better receiver.

PC
has actually gotten progressively worse over the past 3 games (part defenses actually covering him, part dropsies, part stop pointing and dancing preflop like your pants on fire)

He had his coming out party in the
Dolphins and Seahawks games, but you’re right. He was nearly invisible in the Titans game and visible for the wrong reasons in the Rams game. Good point.

I was at that Titans game
He was open deep on quite a few occasions but Manning didn’t see him. The kid is still a great work in progress

I would think Manning saw him, he sees almost everything.
He might have had other reasons for not throwing him the ball though.

i thought his coming out party
was in the dolhpins and cardinals (week 2 and 3) games. Pretty sure that Collie had the big game in the seahawks game.

My mistake.
Somehow my mind told me that the Seahawks game was the week 3 game. I blame my Bio test at 8:00 tonight.

For the record
… I’m not ripping on Shake here. All I’m saying is that one game does not provide perspective on a player’s ability. That’s all. And I don’t think Shake was trying to imply anything like that to begin with; he was just noting a stat that indicated he had a bad day. Rather, I say this as preemptive commentary on possible future judgemental commentaries on Garçon. He’s overall a good player to have, but even I admit he had a stinker of a game.

I just thought I'd point out a situation where observation and advanced stats were totally on the same page
since most people only hear about them when they disagree with common opinion.

Mike Hart
This is of the subject but does any of you guys have a link to the video of the run Mike Hurt had against the Ravens on that 3rd and 2 last year. I’m trying to show it to one of my coworkers who is arguing that Hart is to small to be used in short yardage. I hate that D. Brown got hurt but I’m really excited about Hart playing a little more next week. I hope he does great.
Thanks

Bad game? Drop? Fumble? Can happen.
I’m concerned with penaties. He just make at least one or two (couldn’t find exact statistics) big penalty in every damn game. It’s just frustrating, because coaches are working on this problem from the very first week with him…
Still, even with this, he had a nice season so far, but hopefully Gonzo getting ready.

There's no doubt he had a bad day. But it didn't seem to affect the score of the game any.
We still creamed them.

At this point...
I would not want Pierre Garcon out of the lineup for the sake of Gonzo coming in.
Why? We all agree that Gonzo is the better receiver, but Pierre Garcon stretches the field in a way that I don’t believe Gonzalez can.
That threat (along with the O-line doing an awesome job blocking) is one of the reasons the underneath stuff is open.
I would rather see Gonzo and Collie work the slot. I honestly don’t care who starts.
by Levante on Oct 27, 2009 5:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Actually Gonzo can...
Don’t you remember the deep catches he’s been making for past two years?
Oh no!

Pierre will be fine
Didn’t Reggie once say it took him 4 years to figure out what he was doing playing in the NFL with Peyton Manning?
This is basically Pierre’s rookie year, he’s got nothing but upside. I’m excited as hell to have him.
He’s shown that he has the talent, now he just needs to develop the consistency, and that won’t come till next year.
We Colts fans are just spoiled due to Polian’s draft prowess, most NFL rookies take a couple of years at least to develop.

i’m not worried at all…there is a lot of talent and potential there

Sloppy game
I’m sure he will bounce back, but he will also have a tough time getting playing time once Gonzo comes back. Of course, that could be a while so we shouldn’t be getting too uncomfortable with Garcon being out there because we should be seeing #85 for a couple more weeks IMHO. No one in their right mind would be suggesting taking Dez Bryant in the first round or anything. I’ll take Garcon as the 4th receiver over about every other team’s 4th receiver as well. Now Austin Collie is the hyped young Colts receiver, and he will get more attention because he could actually win Rookie of the Year.

re: collie and oroy
you really think so? I think he has a hard time just being a “#3 WR” on a team with Manning, Wayne, Clark, Addai, Brown, etc.. I have no clue who should be ahead of him.. I assume it will depend on how Mereno, Stafford and Sanchizzzzzze do down the stretch. Powers and Lacey should be talked about dpoy, too. I know that Peter King mentioned Powers as one of his top 5 rookies a couple of weeks ago.
by SpazMo on Oct 27, 2009 11:50 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Powers is great
But he’s gonna need about four picks to get DROY. Problem with good cover corners is they don’t get thrown at so they can’t make picks.

My god, Gonzo is NOT a slot receiver people. I know monstersbox has said this and so have I a few times, Gonzo is arguably the fastest guy on our team. He has the ability to stretch the field better than Garcon in my opinion. Obviously Gonzo will need some time once he is healed to get back in the flow of things which means Garcon will see a good deal of playing time, but once Gonzo is fully healthy, sorry Garcon, you’re back to the bench.

No doubt. And it's not even close.
I can’t forget Garcon’s stone hands I saw in training camp. And preseason. For about two weeks there I wanted to believe that we were way off on this guy and that he’d be great. This week, however, reminded me of the norm. Do I think Garcon shows potential to be a great player? Certainly. But the two great games don’t assure me for good anymore than the drops promise the worst. They kinda balance each other out. It’s still just potential talk at this point.
Gonzalez, on the other hand, is gonna be great. This guy is fast, he runs great routes and he’s highly football intelligent. Plus, he showed up in the playoff game last season, something Marvin had failed to do historically.
This is one of those situations where people just forget how good a player is. Injury time can do that. Especially when we’re winning and everything seems right just as it is. It’s the opposite of the Titans, who seem tempted to blame everything right now as they’re disenchanted with everything and looking for a scapegoat. I don’t think that our 6-0 start means we should stay as we are. We need to put the best players in when healthy and we need to continue improving what we do all the time.
And Gonzo is definitely not a slot receiver. He’s Marvin’s replacement. Time will remind us all of that again.

Agreed
I think people just went “WOW” and fell in love with Pierre a bit too much after Arizona game. I honestly don’t think Pierre is that great of a receiver in other areas besides being a YAC and Deep threat guy. I still can’t forget those drops (it’s not like they were long throws) either.
Gonzo, though, can be a slot receiver if needed. I think he is perfect for both roles, just a bit better on the outside. Now Collie is here, he can take over the slot role while Gonzo can switch in when necessary.
Oh no!

I think our receiving corp
is pretty good when a player like Garcon can be lost in our bench.
