Is the world starting to notice the colts defense?

We as colts fans know how good the defense really is this season and how much of an improvement it is from previous years.

The Peyton Manning lead offense can cast a pretty big shadow and keep our so far great defense under the radar, but for how long?

Ab65d56d-d146-44a4-85bd-14c81f8b57e7_medium

So far so good, as our defense starts to take a more leading role in determining the game's outcome early, the blowout streak will continue for quite sometime with our remaining schedule. I  just hope our comeback skills dosen't loose it luster during that stretch in case we ever come to need them. Not that i miss the cardiac workout in close and comeback wins as i rather be a healthy fan.

The way our defense is performing is making Peyton's job a hell lot easier week after week and the world is starting to notice it. While browsing various sites today i have noticed a slight shift on the tone when people comment on the colts, defense talk is starting to make room in  conversations and for a change it is about how good is looking and not how bad it is.

On game six Peyton didn't reach the 300 yards in the game as his previous five , but it was more that he didn't need to and less on that he couldn't make them. Defense are making plays and are not letting the other team score, but we knew it was going to be this way , we had faith in Polian, Jim and Larry, right? well after all we are devoted fans and will always be positive. But the world thought different and almost all NFL coverage media outlets pronosticated the demise of the colts dominance in the AFC south and envisioned this season be the colts worst in a decade.

They just didn't know how wrong their speculative assumptions based on changes on the team were. Among those changes, Larry Coyer as our defensive coordinator , Coyer's defense consistently ranked among the NFL's most productive during his three seasons as the Broncos' defensive coordinator and helped the team advance to the playoffs each year. The Broncos placed in the league's top-7 in run defense in every year under Coyer and allowed an average of 93.3 rushing yards per game since 2003 to rank second in the NFL during that period.

With the colts firepower offense and what its starting to look as the best colts defense in manning era another Super Bowl win seems possible and nothing farthest from the media off-season prognosis of a bad 2009 colts team.

I will let our team tell the rest of the story and to show us how it will end ,but how sweet for us and sour for them if this come to an end with the Colts as the 2009 World Champions.

And i ask, is the world starting to notice the colts defense?

I read that column by Marot,

He called our defense DOMINANT. I Love it.

why would any one who knows Colts football

say this D is a joke? as of now one person has said that. If that person is reading this comment please come and justify your answer. Give me reasons why this defense is a “joke”

Why would 2006 be better

unless you limit it to the playoffs.

Either way, this team has chance to be the best, but the bar it should be set against are the 2005 colts.

I was thinking the same...

actually 2007 defense was better than 2006.

And I agree about 2005 – what a team! This year’s team is shaping up to be…(don’t want to jinx them)

Funny, I was thinking a little about this earlier today… there were comments in one thread about the disparity in the league right now (number of winless teams versus those with few or no losses). I also had an argument with my husband that the Pats-Titans blowout was a total travesty because it just diminishes the excitement of the game (naturally he was thrilled with the game).

Anyway, expect a Fanpost on this topic in the next day or two if I can find anything about the physiological aspects of watching close games versus blowouts.

How can you not love a team that does this?

Well...

if nobody’s done a study about it yet, I’ll glady accept a grant to research said topic. ;-)

If I had known I was going to do this

I probably could have collected sufficient blood pressure and heart rate data from myself to fill a few volumes. Between the cardiac Colts and the bad news Bears, I’ve been a bundle of nerves at times!

Personally,

I love ALL Colts games, close, blow outs, lead changes, whatever. If it goes down to the wire, it’s like getting a workout, I can’t sit still.

I still think that the 2007

D was the best before injuries killed them.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: This video right here has produced one of my favorite lines ever. It was so awesome that there has been 2 sequels. One where you must put a banana in your ear, and another where you must grab their tongues. Purely awesome.

well i should have added 05 and 07 Defenses on the poll

But is my gut feeling that when its all set and done 09 will get the laurels as the best of them.

I voted yes

But even our Superbowl defense was pretty lousy for most of the year. We’re a scheme defense, not a talent defense – we rely on having enough of a lead to force opponents to pass and y’know, we’re as good as anyone at that, but that’s all.

We have talent

Freeney, Mathis, Sanders, Bethea, Brackett and probably some others ive forgot are all very talented players. We dont rely on having enough of a lead to force opponents to pass, look at the miami game. Yes we are very good at defending the pass, and yes we are often in the lead, but we dont rely on it.

Ahhh...

That would be the Miami game where we were done for 239 yards on the ground and allowed 23 points?

We won that because 1. Miami can’t defend the pass to save their lives, 2. Miami can’t run a two minute drill to save their lives, and 3. because Peyton Manning is the best quarterback in the NFL.

Not because our defense was good.

It was good at preventing TD's.

Most of the time they had to settle for a FG after those 20 minute drives. That’s a plus among plenty of negatives.

I think it might be the best of the Colts modern era

95 and 96 (pre Bills game) were damn good but nothing like this years D.

think 2005 was the best

those DTs were dominating at times…

Well

When you have Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis on a team, it should be a good defense. When you have an awesome defensive coordinator like Larry Coyer, it should be awesome. That is what I think this defense can be.

I've noted this defense was good since Game 1

When I saw Caldwell hired Coyer, I was impressed. I remembered the Hawkeyes defense from back then and it was great. Then I read Coyer’s plan for the defense come draft time. “Keep the defense mobile like Dungy had it, but add some big mobile beef to the line in the middle to stop the run.” I really liked that. I always did think our defense got overpowered some at the line due to a lack of size. Then I saw the first results and Jacksonville which normally punishes the Colts on rushing didn’t really put up impressive rushing numbers. I started getting excited. Then the Miami game happened and people started criticizing the Colts defense for being on the field for over 45 minutes. I looked at things a little differently. Almost every time the Colts defense limited them to a field goal. And even after 45 minutes the Colts defense stood their ground on Miami’s final drive and stopped Miami and won the game. After 45 minutes on the field, you’d normally expect the defense to be tired and making mistakes and it resulting in the other team scoring. To me, the Miami game actually impressed me even with the high rushing numbers, because that’s all Miami did was rush the ball.

But I’ve watched guys step up. Antoine Bethea has looked awesome. Freeney was stepping up in Arizona and looking like his old Pro-Bowl self just sacking and sacking. And then Jerraud Powers and Lacey stepped up last game.

And I love how the Colts changed their strategy from when Dungy coached about blitzing. This puts more pressure on the opponents quarterback and it allows for single coverage on Freeney and Mathis. I love it!

Then you have Kelvin Hayden come back who is amazing at interceptions. And the Colts finally have Bob Sanders back. This defense just keeps getting stronger and better.

Caldwell and Coyer have made the right moves. And a big pat on the back should be given to all of those back-ups who have stepped up this year and helped make this team 6-0.

Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey

IMO have stepped up every game that have played a part in. When you have 2 rookie corners that are playing at the level these two are you know somebody is doing something right. These two will be here for a long time

Lacey....

I’m not sure about every game. He was invisible in the early part of the season and made some bad mistakes in preseason. He has gotten a lot better though.
