THE STATE OF THE 49ers: WEEK 8 EDITION

I hear they also do Pilate's and Yoga together...

1.) The QB situation and O-Line

Shaun Hill or Alex Smith? I've heard these guys are good friends. However, Alex Smith might be making the move to snatch the starting QB spot. Shaun Hill so far has thrown for 943 yds, 5 td's and 2 int's. He's been the starting QB until now. Mid-way through the game against the Texans, Alex Smith replaced Shaun Hill and lets say he almost pulled through. Alex threw for 206 yds and threw for 3 td's in the loss against the Texans. Will Smith start this week? One things for certain. Whoever starts better be ready for Freeney with a side of Mathis.

Update: Alex Smith will start Sunday against the Colts

The 49er offensive line aren't the prettiest pass protecting bunch out there. So far they've allowed over 19 sacks this season.(I'm surprised Shaun Hill is still alive) However, they're a solid running team.(I'm pushing this area a bit) To be honest my money is on the Colt's D line against this area. Maybe Brock can finally get some sacks!

Update: The 49er O-Line takes another blow with the loss of their veteran RT Tony Pashos.

2. Frank Gore

Frank Gore will be the wild card going into this game. He’s been a 1000 yd rusher the past three seasons. Still, I can’t state whether he’ll be great or not by judging last week’s performance. It was his first appearance since the week 3 heartbreaking loss to the Vikings. He was injured early and Glen Coffee was moved to starting RB to cover for him.(He was an O.K. sub, nothing to rave about) Fast forward to last week, Gore only made an appearance by having 13 rushes for 32 yds. However, before injuring his ankle he had a monster game against the Seahawks by accumulating 207 rushing yd’s and 2 td’s. If the 49ers have any chance in an upset, it will have to involve getting Gore rolling. Here’s to hoping Gore doesn’t show up. I know the Colt D would rather have another bye-week after their run in with Steven Jackson.

                                                                                                 A BIG threat

3. The WR's

Here's something the Colt's D hasn't seen in a while. A decent set of WR's! These guys consist of the elder veteran in Isaac Bruce, the durable second year veteran Josh Morgan, and the explosive TE monster in Vernon Davis. I would include Micheal Crabtree, however he needs more games to become a legit receiver. Let's start off with Isaac Bruce. Hall of Fame receiver, however time has caught up to him. Yet, he's still good enough to suit up and has been pulling his weight so far with 190 receiving yds. Josh Morgan is a young learning receiver, so far he's accumulated 264 yds and 1 td. Finally, Vernon Davis. This guy is 6' 3" of pure steel, he currently leads the Niners with 355 yds and 6 tds. (That's 3 more than Dallas Clark! However, Clark is the better TE) These guys should put the Colt Secondary to work. Let's see if the Colt Secondary is up to the Challenge.

The best LB in the NFC

4.) The 49er Defense

Manning better study up because he'll be going up against a stout veteran defense. Let me first get Patrick Willis out of the way. He's a monster and has my vote as the Best LB in the NFC(Yeah, I know DeMarcus Ware). The veteran 49er D-Line is lead by Justin Smith a veteran DE that will test whoever starts LT.(here's to hoping Johnsons healthy) The LB corp is a pretty well rounded group lead by Willis. However, their Achilles heel might be their secondary. Would Be superstar CB Nate Clements isn't producing. Their safeties could be exploited in certain situations. To be honest I don't see the Colts being able to run the ball on the 49ers at all. Yeah, I know they're not a running team. However, the 49er defense might take away the play action fake if the Colts can't convince them they can run. Nevertheless, Manning will prevail in my opinion. The 49er defense has never encountered such a force all year.( I know Manning is irritated for not getting his 6th straight 300 yd game!)

I would like to thank the Niner Nation in pointing me in the right direction.(THANKS GUYS!)

Great stuff, again - rec'd

This is the piece I’m beginning to look forward to most every week

How can you not love a team that does this?

Disagree on Crabtree.

Regardless of what you may think of his business acumen/respect for the team, the guy can flat out play. Between him, Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore, the Niners are starting to accumulate a nice set of weapons. I believe I read that Crabtree took Morgan’s spot in the starting lineup, for what that’s worth. Regardless, he made a few catches in his first foray into NFL game action, and I expect him to be just as good if not better come this weekend.

I think the story of this game will be on the other side of the ball for the Niners… if they can hold Manning in check, they can win this game. The way Peyton’s playing, I don’t see anyone holding him in check.

Willis is as good a choice as any for best NFC LB. I think the Colts will be able to run enough to at least keep the Niners guessing. As we’ve shown in earlier games, we don’t have much of an issue running the ball even when not having great success at it. It’s a lot easier to run when you know that Peyton and Co. generally only need one catch to keep the offense moving.

I agree about Crabtree

In his first game ever in the NFL, Crabtree had the 4th best game of any SF WR so far this season: 5 Rec, 56 yards. And that number should have been 6 receptions for 73 yards except 1 of his catches was called back because of an illeagel motion penelty by Josh Morgan. He even took over Morgan’s spot in the starting line-up even though Singletary said he wouldn’t at the beggining of the week.

Don't trust this guy. He lies.

Want to see something messed up.....

Here’s some interesting stats from the NFL Network:

This season, here is a comparison of two 1st Round WRs from this year’s draft.

Michael Crabtree 1 GP, 5 REC, 56 YDs, 0 TDs
Darrius Heyward-Bey 7 GP, 4 REC, 64 YDS, 0 TDs

This is with no camp, no preseason work for Crabtree

Next up, Bay Area QBs, two #1 overall picks:

Alex Smith(#1, 2005 Draft): 1/2 GP, 15/22, 68,2%, 206 YDS, 3 TDs, 1 INT, 118.6 Passer Rating
JaMarcus Russell(#1, 2007 Draft) 7 GP, 74/160, 46.3%, 891 YDS, 2 TDs, 8 INTs, 47.2 Passer Rating

So yeah, there is definitely some talent out there in San Fran. I think the Colts will be prepared for it though, and lay waste to the Niners.

I also wish I had time and motivation to blog at Speed Blue Nation

Hey,

DHB finally has more receptions then he has names! Good for him.

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: This video right here has produced one of my favorite lines ever. It was so awesome that there has been 2 sequels. One where you must put a banana in your ear, and another where you must grab their tongues. Purely awesome.

DHB vs. Crabtree

before last week’s game I predicted that Crabtree would have more receptions after one game than DHB would have after 7. And I wasn’t wrong (first time for everything).

re: the Niners defense--particularly Willis

Just wondering, if Willis is the best middle ‘backer in the NFC, who’s the top guy in the AFC? Ray Lewis?

Morgan breaks through in 2009!

Gary Brackett.

Most underrated middle linebacker in the NFL and in my opinion the best (at least in the AFC). He is the absolute perfect MLB for the Tampa 2, and this team would probably be sunk without him.

Disagree on Crabtree

Through one game he has proven he is a legit WR in the NFL. He has great hands, route-running, etc. He’s gonna be a beast by next season.

Oh, and Vernon Davis is better than Clark.. Just sayin. :P
