Around SBN: Yu Darvish Diagnosed With Mariners Fever

It's Saturday! That means college football for some of you freaks out there- Open Thread

So, what college game are you strapped to today? Oh, wait a minute. Iowa is going for 5-0. Gee, wonder what weird voodoo ritual shake n bake is concocting in order to insure that 5-0 start. Here's what SB Nation writer Sean Keeley thinks of their match-up today:

Arkansas State (1-3) at No. 13 Iowa (4-0) - 12 p.m., ESPN2

Judging by the way Iowa has played this season and since this is an opponent they should beat easily, expect things to come down to a last-second field goal.  Regardless, expect Iowa to bring the suffering.

Iowa fans everywhere are naming each beer fart they produce this Saturday after Sean Keeley.

But while all these freak Iowa fans are watching their Hawkeyes take on Arkansas State Red Wolves (who?), the entire state of Indiana will be watching this beauty:

No. 9 Ohio State (3-1) at Indiana (3-1) - 7 p.m., BTN

This isn't a rivalry, it's a historically-one-sided butt-thumpin'.  Assuming Terrelle Pryor works out some of his many kinks, OSU should avoid many of the pitfalls Michigan ran into last week.

Oh, yeah. And Purdue plays Northwestern... or some junk like that.

Enjoy your Saturday, and chat away.

Northwestern (2-2) at Purdue (1-3) - 12 p.m., BTN

Washington (2-2) at Notre Dame (3-1) - 3:30 p.m., NBC

in heaven there is no beer, thats why we drink it here!

for shake-
Hawkeyes share their Team MVP thus far

Defensive tackle Christian Ballard: "Probably Adam Robinson … Running back was kind of a question for this team, but what he and Brandon Wegher have done has probably been one of the best things to happen to us.’’

Running back Adam Robinson: "Adrian Clayborn. He’s really made his presence known. He’s just a really aggressive, athletic player who knows his job and does it. I think he’s just a force for our defense. He’s really stepped up for us.’’

Defensive end Broderick Binns: "Pat Angerer. His intensity has been there every game. He’s always positive out there. It’s always ‘Let’s go, let’s keep going, let’s get after them.’’’

Linebacker Pat Angerer: "The whole D-line. They’ve just been tremendous.’’

Center Rafael Eubanks: "Adrian Clayborn has been great the way he has stepped up at critical moments, on critical downs. He’s made a difference for this team.’’

Guard Dace Richardson: "Our whole defense. They’ve done a tremendous job, especially this past week. They kept us in the game.’’

Punter Ryan Donahue: "I have no idea. I wouldn’t know who to pick. Every game someone has come out and stepped it up. It’s been someone different every game.’’

I love this team when you have so many guy who contribute that you have no clue who the best player is on the team

-29

Quarters have been played since the last time Iowa allowed a rushing touchdown

-The Hawkeyes have never begun 5-0 under KF.

-Iowa’s eight-game winning streak is currently tied for second best in the nation with Texas. Florida holds the longest win streak at 14 games. Iowa has two nine-game winning streaks under coach Kirk Ferentz (2002, 2003 and 2004).

and best of all- the gators have a bye…please no tebow ALL DAY! Im sure meyer is holding his hand as we speak but lets make it a tebow free day college football

and finally A.J. Derby chose IOWA over florida and oklahoma ! the tide is changing shake! THE TIDE IS CHANGING!

I'll be watching Notre Dame this afternoon, and THE U, later tonight.

I dislike Charlie Weiss immensely, but what the heck, I love their Touchdown Jesus!
I like THE U because of Edge and Reggie, and lastly I’ll be switching back and forth from the Irish to see Peyton’s Vols. I love football season!

Iowa 24, ArkSt. 21 final

But was it a last-second field goal,

or just a FG margin?

FG margin

They were up 21-7 at the ArkSt. 20 then Stanzi threw an awful, awful pick6 and it was suddenly a game.

ArkSt. only got 10 seconds to go 90 yards with no timeouts thanks to some Dolphins-esque clock management on their drive that made it 21-24

by shake n bake on Oct 3, 2009 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

After watching Peyton for all of my

football life, clock management (2 minute and otherwise) seems so obvious. I could tell you what to do in every situation because I’ve seen them all done by Peyton. It always baffles me how many other teams can’t grasp basic clock management.

What I don’t get is why Peyton (and Moore) doesn’t use the hurry-up from the onset and cause the defense to basically screw itself over. I’m not talking about their normal no-huddle offense. I talking about the act like there’s only 15 seconds left on the clock and it’s ticking down so we need to hurry up and hike the goddamn ball so we can throw it down the field and hope to score a touchdown offense.

Their hurry-up offense is so incredibly disgustingly good that the best way to describe it is like the shock and awe offensive we did to the Iraqi’s back in 2003.

IMO.

Interesting suggestion.

That’s not something I’d like to see every drive (need to run the ball and give our D a break every now and then), but it certainly seems like a strategy we can execute with our available weapons. I’d be interested to see how that kind of play-calling works against something other than the prevent defense.

I would like to see that strategy once or twice, just to see if it could work.

Just finished watching the LSU-Georgia game

Excessive celebration penalties are a terrible idea, and just cost Georgia the win. Also, anyone who thinks that white guys can’t be RBs hasn’t heard of Toby Gerhart.

He's not even the starter yet

actually wasn’t even on the two-deeps going into the fall. Shonn Greene’s very capable backup Jewel Hampton* was suppose to be the starter, then the great Paki O’Meara and then there were 2 redshirt freshmen, then Wegher. Jewel was shut down with a knee injury before the season started and will be back next year as a RS Sophomore, one of the redshirt freshmen got dinged up just before the season started leaving Paki, the other RS Freshman Adam Robinson, then Wegher. Paki was a disaster in the opener, leaving Iowa with it’s current pairing of Adam Robinson and Brandon Wegher.

Next years backfield is going to be crazy crowded. Jewel back, Robinson the returning starter and Wegher the super-prospect. Not to mention Paki and the other RS freshman will be back (baring a transfer for Brinson)

*=Hoosiers fans should remember the 114 yards and 3 TDs Jewel put up on top of Greene’s 115 and a TD that game

I'm probably setting myself up for disappointment, but Iowa has a legit Big Ten title shot

but Michigan is up in a week and @OSU is still on the schedule and I can’t be unafraid of any team on the schedule because of Iowa’s tendency to play to the level of the competition (see the Stanzi pick6 when they were about to put Arkansas State away with a 3 score game).

by shake n bake on Oct 3, 2009 9:26 PM EDT reply actions

"tendency to play to the level of the competition"

With any sports team, that is a tendency to be absolutely terrified of. Fortunately, the Colts don’t do that often, if at all (The last time the Colts did that was @ Houston in 2006).

By the way, that little UNI team the media keeps bringing up and bashing…to remind us over and over again how iowa escaped this “lowly” team, lambasted another team again yesterday, 62-7. They are 4-1 and since losing to Iowa, they have won by the score of 66-7, 30-0, 35-7 and 62-7.

this week stanzi decided to have his two good quarters first and his sucky two last.

still not impressed with LSU. they will get pounded by the gators if they play like they did against georgia.

love this quote by KF
Last time we had a non-style point game we played OK the next three weeks," Ferentz said. "So maybe we’re ready for another three-week burst here again. I don’t know.

Iowa. Perfect? No. Undefeated? Yes.

by kinnickcolt on Oct 4, 2009 9:08 AM EDT reply actions

LSU is way overrated

They barely got past Washington, Mississippi State and Georgia. They’re only up there because 1. They’re undefeated, 2. They’re in the SEC, and 3. Because everyone in front of them fell apart. They won’t be so lucky against Florida.
