Jacob Lacey fined $10K for excessive celebration

Falling clearly under the category of significant BS.  Adam Schefter is reporting that Jacob Lacey got fined $10,000 for his flagged endzone celebration after his pick 6 in St. Louis.  How is his end zone slide worse than doing flips into the endzone?  As an undrafted rookie free agent, I'm guessing he'll feel the pinch of this fine worse than others.

Maybe some of the other guys on D can chip in and help him out...

This is absolutely redicules

Hm – maybe I can combine the calendar idea with a fund raiser to help him pay the fine.

How can you not love a team that does this?

eww

that’s over half of a gamecheck for him.

He won’t ever to that again.

Abso-freakin-lutely!

Hopefully he’ll appeal (it IS BS) and get it knocked in half, then the rest of the D pitches into a hat to help him out.

First time offender, UDFA, first INT, first TD, no props, etc, nobody hurt. They will have to halve it.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Viz Media (The creators of my absolute favorite show of all-time and inspiration to my avatar, Naruto) just announced a partnership with the channel Disney XD to bring the English-dubbed episodes of Naruto Shippuden (The continuation of the Naruto series) to that station with a new episode airing each week, starting, well, NOW. With the series recording I just put on it, this is one of the greatest days I've had in a long time. I'm not kidding. I love the show that much.

Crazy

The reason it’s a fine/penalty is that unsportsmanlike conduct is the wording from the rulebook:

“Individual players involved in prolonged or excessive celebrations. Players are prohibited from engaging in any celebrations while on the ground.”

I guess sliding is “on the ground.”

this is rediculous on so many levels

Did he purpose to a cheerleader? Nope
Did he pull a cell phone from under the goal post padding? Nope
Did he run out and start celebrating on the Rams logo at mid-field? Nope
I could go on on. This is bullshit. The NFL needs to fine the refs for even throwing a flag in the fist place. The guy did nothing wrong. I hope he appeals the fine and gets it overturned. The NFL is a sport loved by many but its getting harder and harder when you get fined for EVERYTHING. I mean damn they are just out there having fun. I even think the new Tom Brady rule is BS. Lighten up NFL. Lets get back to football and not seeing how much money we can rape player for. Damn.

This is bullshit.

When an overpayed player like Kyle VandenDouche is only fined $5000 dollars for a low hit on Peyton Manning (an act with possible career-ending implications for a player) and a low-payed free agent rookie is fined twice that for doing nothing more than “sliding down” into the endzone, something that QB’s and high-priced WR’s do all the time on the playing field, then there is something truly fucking wrong with the current fining system in the NFL.

P.S. Fuck You Roger Goodell. (1st time I’ve ever said that…to Goodell, that is, I say fuck you all the time…)

well, let's hope it's not the last

We can pitch in and make a giant papier mache hand extending the middle finger, paint blue horseshoes all over it, and send it to Jacob to tape his fine check to, then UPS the whole damn thing to Goodell.

I always planned to leave my current job with a similar gesture—one Monday the boss walks by my empty office and sees this giant hand, gesturing. Just a sculpture, really.

Wowie - 10k?

I guess you can do flips because you’re technically on your feet, but the guy from the Steelers that did the flip landed on his ass first, so under the rule, he should have been flagged since he was on the ground with the ball.

Ridiculous.

by Gwen on Oct 30, 2009 6:24 PM EDT reply actions

^^THIS

the rule is the rule, so I feel sorry for Lacey getting caught up in it. But you are correct, why aren’t the flips where they roll on the ground being flagged for the same reason?

Go Colts!

I’d make sure the check bounced.

I did this a few times at that dump of a site I used to write for so I figured, hell, why not try it out over at Stampede Blue you know? At least this time someone will actually be reading it.

Not to side with the NFL on this ridiculousness

But I wonder if the problem with this penalty/fine had to do with the timing. Find a video for it and watch when he starts his slide. He’s about halfway into the endzone, which may be seen as excessive since the deed was already done.

I guess I could see the penalty, but the fine doesn’t seem to make any sense for something as tame as this. Oh well. Hopefully the team helps him out on this, but we know he won’t be doing this again, which is unfortunate, because I liked it, haha.

This league is completely

out of control. If Manning and the boys weren’t so freakin’ good, I wouldn’t even want to watch the NFL. It’s really sad what this league has morphed into.

by Ayrshire on Oct 30, 2009 6:36 PM EDT reply actions

I thought the announcers said

that Lacey threw the ball into the stands. I watched the replay looking to see what happened, but it seems like they cut it off too early for me to tell what exactly warranted the penalty (and apparently the fine as well)

by yellowsnow on Oct 30, 2009 7:02 PM EDT reply actions

If you watch closely

You see him drop the ball to make the safe signal. It seems unlikely that he went to pick up the ball again and then throw into the stands.

If I were rich, I’d send him the $10K because this is a retarded fine. Maybe i’ll send him what I can just as a sign of support….

by UnofficialPants on Oct 31, 2009 5:20 AM EDT up reply actions

10K

Is a big hit for somebody who makes the league minimum. Still, give the kid a break, he had his first pick-6 as a pro and his celebration was not bad at all.

Man guys

Don’t you realize that we hurt the poor St. Louis Offense’s feelings? How cold and disgusting are we?!?! I mean, it’s not like these guys are grown men…

/end sarcasm rant

I compare this BS penalty to a police tickets. They don’t really care if it’s a legit law or not. They just want the damn money. It’s sickening. It really is. To hit a rookie with a fine like that when he makes a great play is just cruel.

don't the fines go to charity?

I found some references saying it does. The one link I found said it wasn’t made clear where the money goes but that fines are regularly reduced or waived without any public comment after the media is done talking about them, and that fines are tax deductible.

by shake n bake on Oct 31, 2009 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Even if it does

I’m sure that the NFL does donate to charity, still, it doesn’t matter how you spend the money, It’s thievery. If they want to make a donation to charity, do it with a fair rule or with their own money.

I doubt that the fine is taken off after the publicity goes through. What does the NFL gain from this publicity? They gain bad publicity if anything, so I don’t see their incentive.

That’s an interesting article though. Why is the NFL so skittish about keeping their finances discreet?

Suggestion for Cass

Why don’t you bake your famous (non ladybug) cookies and sell them at tomorrow’s game for $50 each to raise money to cover Lacey’s fine? I’ll buy one from a distance.
