The New Orleans Saints moved to 4-0 on the year for the first time in forever. This team has been lead by a Pro Bowl QB in Drew Brees. They have 1 win over a quality team (Jets) and even that is questionable based on the team being led by a rookie QB. They've had 2 blow out wins over 2 teams that are completely not any good, and it took 2 TD's on defense to win the game against the Jets. Is this team for real?
For all the hype about Drew Brees, in the last 2 games he's combined to throw for about 362 yards and failed to produce a single TD passing. In today's game alone, Peyton Manning threw for 353 yards and 2 TD's. Any question of whether Drew Brees is in Manning's class ended today. Brees is a top 5 QB, but there is zero discussion of him being able to compete at Manning's level.
Many of you will read this and say well they are 4-0. It's easy to be 4-0 against bad teams. The entire AFC East last year is a prime example of what playing a schedule full of cupcakes can do to you. It's no coincidence that all 3 of the AFC East teams didnt make it out of the first round (or into the playoffs) despite their records.
Another point is that the Saints have yet to play a single team that is considered an offensive threat. The Eagles at full strength might have been a game of it, but thats about it. The rest of these teams are in a transition period or simply aren't any good. The Saints defense gave up almost 50 pts thru 2 games against the Lions and the Eagles. That simply won't work against a team like the Giants, Colts, Steelers, or even the Falcons..(dont sleep on them).
Some have already pointed out that it would be great to the see the Saints play the Colts in the Superbowl. This is only great if you are a Colts fan because this game won't be close. The last 2 times the Colts and Saints have played, Peyton threw for 11 TD's and the Colts roasted the Saints by a combined score of like 95 to 40.
The Saints are a great story. They are a fun team to watch and I for one enjoy seeing that team (a laughing stock much like the Lions and Cardinals for most of its history) doing very well. However, I think saying this team is for real is a stretch. You might ask why I would post this, but I'm simply tired of guys overlooking Peyton Manning for some flash in the pan player as they do every year.
