The under the radar Marlin Jackson situation
Has anyone else noticed that Marlin seems to have lost his starting CB job? At first, I figured they were just bringing him back slowly after the injury, but it seems now that they simply want him as the nickel CB exclusively. This is kind of a big deal in my mind, as it's not a situation where the Colts had a subpar player at CB they had been trying to replace. Marlin has been great for the Horse. It seems that their desire to have Marlin play nickel CB is coupled with the fact that the rookies are just that freakin good.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

Marlin
Is actually a better cover guy for a slot receiver than any of our other corners or linebackers. I think it is more of a get him back into game shape and the fact that teams are going to give us alot of three wide formations which means Marlin in the slot.

He's been playing great ball
so they must just be platooning him still. There’s no reason to demote him, he’s been making great tackles and covering well. The other thing is they’ve traditionally kept him inside in the nickel anyway.

Kinda . . .
I know they’ve always liked him at the nickel, but there’s no question he has been our starting CB for last 2 years, so I don’t know that it’s accurate to say they’ve kept him at nickel traditionally. I’m not busting on the guy, I’m just saying, in my mind, it’s kind of a big deal or at the very least, an interesting situation that isn’t getting much coverage from the local media or amongst fan circles. We fans for the last two years have been quite proud of our 1-2 punch at CB of Hayden and Jackson. Most of us felt Jackson could have made the probowl a couple of years ago.
I totally get that it’s always seemed they would rather play Marlin at nickel or safety, but I don’t think anyone would have dreamed coming into the season that a healthy Marlin would not be our starting CB, and that’s exactly what’s happening.
It’s an awfully good problem to have when you have too much talent at one position.

Different philosophy
I think it stems from the change in philosophy between Dungy/Meeks and Caldwell/Coyer. Coyer seems to like more man-to-man coverage which favors Powers, Hayden and even Jennings to an extent. Marlin plays better across the middle and in Cover 2 or zone schemes and he is more physical as well. I like the change because I don’t think a whole lot of Marlins man-to-man coverage skills.

A few possibilities
First, he is DEFINITELY still dealing with the tendinitis that comes from major knee surgery. While he still looks very good, he won’t be back to normal until next year. So the less reps he gets now, the better his knee will be in January. You can count on it. The fact that he’s only been seen in nickel situations is probably due to the fact that this is where he provides the most value. Having his size there deters teams at least somewhat from trying to run in passing situations.
Second, while I love Marlin, he is really more of a hybrid corner/safety. And especially when he isn’t 100% he’s probably not the guy you want being in single coverage on the outside when we blitz. He just won’t have the agility and straight line speed (which aren’t his strengths anyway) to keep up with a speedy WR on the edge.
And if you want a conspiracy theory, here you go: He WILL NOT get a big extension next year like Hayden did last year. We can’t afford 2 corners making that kind of money. So the Colts are either trying to see what these new kids are made of in order to see if they can replace him. And the side effect is that they are keeping him off the field and out of site to other GMs and coaches in hopes that they get a bargain next year. I’m not sure I believe this, but it is rather “convenient”.

Th einjury reason
no longer holds water. If you rewatch the game, Marlin was playing on special teams. If you’re waiting for someone to recover from an injury to their knees, you don’t have them running down on kick coverage, etc…

interesting....
I never noticed him out there on special teams. So maybe the number of reps aren’t a concern at this point. I still would hesitate to say that injury doesn’t have ANYTHING to do with it. History has shown that it takes 2 years to fully recover from an ACL reconstruction. It will be next year before he regains all of his speed and agility, which weren’t exceptional in the first place.
The 2 youngsters have been very solid, but I can’t see any scenario where you’d want Tim “The Cushion” Jennings out there over a truly 100% healthy Marlin.

I agree
With both SpazMo and AceOfSpades. I think he’s healthy, but the change in defensive philosophy calls for guys that are faster and better at man to man.

I don't think so
ACL injury usually takes a long time to heal. I really doubt that Marlin is back 100% yet. Besides, he’s the best guy on the roster for covering slot receivers anyway, and the basic DEF scheme is still Tampa 2. From what I’ve noticed, Jerraud isn’t exactly the best type of guy in run support, blitzing, etc compared to Marlin (even Kelvin isn’t quite as good in that matter). Marlin is also more versatile than any of other DBs, and versatility is something the Colts absolutely love.
Yeah, it’s the new defense blah blah blah, but as long as the base scheme is Tampa 2, Marlin is better fit. It’s not like the Colts blitz all the time. They blitz sometimes, and Jerraud or Lacey can be brought in during those man to man situations.
Oh no!

Give it some time...
Most guys do not go back to a starting role within a year of blowing out their knee, regardless of who you are. Sure, it’s been done, but most of those guys missed well over a year of time…
Jackson might be 100%, he might not be, ultimately…the Colts just need to get him on the field.
He’s a better player than Jennings, and if you have been paying attention, you’ll notice that with Hayden out, they’ve had Jackson, Powers, Lacey, and Jennings on the field….
Put Hayden back in, and you can almost guarantee Jennings goes out…
