Why knock Bob?

Previously I've written that #18 was a victim of the former coaching regime (for too few SB rings), but in truth the guy who suffered the most from it was Bob Sanders.

With the arm-tackling, jello defense that couldn't tackle a teletubby, Bob was the one who gave up his body repeatedly, ultimately to his physical detriment (i.e. injuries).  If his career is ultimately cut short, I blame the former coaches.  Please let's not forget what we owe him.

Some people have compared Bob to Polamalu, but at least Polamalu has James Harrison as a teammate on the D while Bob's had to play with such inept-tackling marshmallows as Gilbert Gardner and Cato June.  Presently we still lack a Mike Curtis type LB who can drill people.

Now as far as trading him for cap space or a needed player, I'm not saying rule it out.  Hell, Unitas, Namath, and Montana were all ultimately traded or released, so it's cruel but that's pro sports for you.

Actually right now I'd trade Gonzo (since we're very deep at WR) for an OL or LB.  Hell, even for a Hester-like returner.

Anyway, please don't make it sound like it's Bob idea to be fragile on purpose.

actually

there a bunch of guys who have showed their love for #21 in related posts.

Im one of those guys. I love the guy, I respect what he had done and i really want to see our new D with Bobzilla there. His presence alone makes the Colts a better team, not just a better D.

I say when you sign

a guys paycheck, that looks like he just won the powerball…………you dont really owe him shit after that. Might be the other way around a little.

How can you really have a complaint about a coaching staff who consistently won 12 games a year?

So youre saying you havent been frustrated at all that Sanders hasnt been able to stay on the field? You cant fault any of us for wishing the guy would be able to earn his paycheck more often than he’s been able to.

I shoot high, I guess

Marvinindy:

To me winning twelve games a year is nice, but that’s about it. Shit, with #18 as the QB, Ted Marchibroda could’ve done that.

Excuse the lazy analogy, but I agree with the Yankees philosophy; if you don’t win it all (the Yankees haven’t won the World Series since 2000), you’ve had a bad season. You don’t necessarily call for anyone to be fired, but there’s obviously room for improvement. Which frustated me no end about the previous coaching regime: “We do what we do.” Thank God Caldwell is fixing areas that have needed improvement for a long time.

I understand how you feel, but I’m more frustrated that Bob continues to hurting himself because the rest of the team are arm-tackling weenies. If we had a James Harrison on the team, maybe Bob could keep his health. Just sayin’

You have good points

I’d like the team to have a few more SB wins or appearances, but I’ll take what we’ve had over the alternative (not making the post-season).

If you dont at least make it, you have no chance at getting to the big game. So I’m happy the team has at least made it to the post season as much as they have.

I’m not sold on the idea that the scheme or other players have anything to do with Sanders being injured so much. I mean, there are 3 other players in the secondary who’ve managed to play quite a bit without much injury. (I use that as a point, when both starting corners are injured, i know…….but recent happenings aside)

I was never a huge fan of the Dungy style defense. Not because I thought it didnt work or anything. If you have the right personnel and everyone on that side of the ball does his job, it can be a hard defense to be successful against. Ive just always liked defenses that change it up a bit, and have a few tricks up their sleeve. Its just more fun to wonder what badass thing they will hit em with next. That verses base defense……vanilla……same old same old……where you can guess what the F is going on 85% of the time.

When Freeney plays without missing any time after a quad injury

And Manning has missed one snap in his NFL career, when someone is constantly hurt but makes a lot of money it gets annoying.

"Brett Favre was a man who thought he was retired, but he knew it wouldn't last."

by Colts Homer on Oct 8, 2009 9:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, and

this it he last thing I’m going to say on this, because its sort of pointless to divide fans of a team over a player, but the thing that annoys me most is when people say,

“Just sit Bob for the games we don’t need him to help win! We need him for the playoffs! Gotta protect Bob!’

What? Okay, so against the Rams, Seahawks, Bills, etc… we should be sitting Manning, too, right? Manning is clearly the better player. I’ve never heard of a player be praised for missing 25, 50, 75% of a season before, like its a good thing. This guy is a top 3 paid safety, his salary actually counts against the Colts’ salary cap. Its not like baseball where the Colts could pay him 500million and just sit him on the bench, isnt his salary like 5% of the cap? Thats a lot for someone thats not playing 100% of the games.

Finally, to the ‘we need Bob for the playoffs’ cry. Why do people say that? He’s been in the playoffs every year, right? The Colts have been successful with him for one of those years. And how do you go to the rest of your team and say, ‘Ya know, you guys are fighting, scratching, kicking, screaming, bleeding to get us in to the playoffs, Just go ahead and don’t hold anything back, risk injury, play with a bad knee, play with a torn quad, but the glass safety is going to sit on the bench, we need HIM for the playoffs, we can risk getting you injured, Peyton and Dwight.’

We all know that the team can't go anywhere without Peyton

but the defense is a different story. Plugs can be filled in different holes on D, but for how long is the question. If I were to rank the top 3 most important defensive players on the team it would be 1) Freeney, 2) Brackett, and 3) Sanders. I’m hella scared if Freeney misses a ton of time and concerned with Brackett (but it’s been better since Keiaho has been doing a fine job the past 2 games), but with Sanders, I forgot all about him because of he never plays.

No Bullitt isn’t All-Pro, but he did make game-ending INTs last season when the Colts’ margin of victory was 5 points or less, and his hit on that kept that Cardinals receiver out of the endzone which lead to the forced fumbled that who caused..Bullitt. It could’ve been 10-0 at that point, but it ended up being 21-3 at the half.

Bob is a better safety than Bulllit, but Melivn deserves p.t. and I think Coyer will find a way to put them both on the field at the same time.

"Do I believe in aliens?" Stephon Marbury asked. "I don't know, because I've never seen one. But I believe in Jesus because I saw him in the shower the other day."

Well, neither Freeney nor Manning play safety, which is the most abusive position in the league. Adrian Peterson said he wants to play safety because he loves the hits. So neither Freeney or Manning are going to see the impacts Sanders does. We see Bullitt hit people, but that’s not the way Bob hits people. Bob knocks people like Fred Jones—the 255# fullback from the Jags—BACK. Remember that play? Jones-Drew—BACK. Bob’s going to get hurt. And when the safety is cleaning up a run every damn play, it’s because the linebackers, heavier guys that are supposed to stop these guys, suck. Sander’s great years were when he was playing linebacker for the non-tacklers. This is N Colters point, and I agree.

NFL is a business. If Bob can heal up and play several more years, he can sit the year out and make money for Jim Irsay. He fills the seats. Any play he could do something spectacular. From a business perspective, a Bob Sanders comes around once in a generation. You don’t trade him if nursing him along a year will probably give him several more.

It’s not about the playoffs or Superbowl, it’s about filling the seats. Star players fill the seats.

not going to comment on the Sanders portion

I’ve made my feelings known/clear and no one is going to say anything that changes my mind… however, Bob Sanders did nothing to Fred Jones. Maybe to Greg Jones, though.. :P And yea, I remember that hit, it was a beaut, but Jones was a blocker, didnt have the ball, and didnt MJD still get to the goalline and score on the next play?

by SpazMo on Oct 8, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Greg Jones...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_g3DMiXelc&feature=related

He’s got the ball, it’s at 1:13.

Ever see that college video of Greg Jones running up the field splatting all the defenders?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wbO3ZOQMbQ

Bob Sanders, 50# lighter, wasn’t having none of it. Bob knocked him back, by himself, and didn’t even go down. Fullback touchdown—DENIED. That’s not a helmet on the football.

by wcwills on Oct 9, 2009 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hell

remember that tackle on Jerome Bettis in 05? It was a thing of beauty.
And there are several reasons why players fill the seats. In this case, its because #21 makes a defense better, having awesome tackles, awesome plays. He fills the seats because he is remembered as one of the keys for this team to accomplish what many thought as impossible, and that was winning a super bowl.

Its pointless to discuss this Sanders issue. Im pretty sure that when he comes back, everyone will show their love for him again.

Yes, thank you

Very eloquent of you, that’s exactly what I meant.

If our LBs for the last few years could hit at all, Bob’s injuries probably wouldn’t have been so severe because he probably wouldn’t have had to give up his body so much.

He should never have been our primary enforcer, merely a complementary one. Perhaps that’s still the way it’ll turn out. Let’s hope.

Bob's awesome, I'm glad he's on our team

And his durability’s not his fault. Guy just doesn’t heal well. Unfortunately, with the way Bullit’s played over the last year, it hasn’t really created any sense of “Damn, I wish Sanders was in there.” We’ve gotten solid production from Bullit and it’s made it more of “Damn, why do we pay Sanders so much for 8 games a year when Bullit’s been so reliable?”

If they could find a good trade for Bob, and pulled the trigger, I’d like to see if he was more durable on another team. Kinda like how Shaq went from banged up in Miami to healthy in Phoenix. Obviously, he had a new motivation there, and I don’t think that’s Bob’s issue, but a team’s medical staff can definitely impact how guys recover from injuries.

I think once Bob gets on the field, we’ll know the answer to what he means to the team. Our defense has been rock solid without Bob, and either he’s going to catapult the team’s defense into elite status, or there’s going to be a marginal bump in production that’s falls short of justifying the cap hit – in which case a trade, or even release, may be an option.

Personally, I hope he comes back and does make the defense something to be feared. It seems like it’s become cool to hate on Bob lately, but I think he’s still a game changer – even for this recently efficient defense.

You don’t post here a lot. How do you manage to bash Dungy’s coaching nearly every time you do? I’m really sorry he killed your dog and all. And I’m also tired of engaging you on the Dungy front. However, it kinda surprises me even from you that you’d turn the Sanders debate into blaming Dungy for his fragility. Unbelievable.

by coltsfanawalt on Oct 9, 2009 2:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it actually makes sense now...

Dungy ordered Bob to kill the guys dog, and in the process of doing so, Bob got hurt. I’m glad we cracked the case.

I'm sorry for sounding off, coltsfanawalt

Although I felt that you were being merely dismissive, I shouldn’t have responded the way I did.

Without civility these forums stop being fun and just become rancorous. Never my intent.

And for the last time, I don’t hate you-know-who (my original post didn’t even mention him by name). Just his defensive philosophy. Which I’ll try my damndest never to bring up again, directly or indirectly.

The lover of Dungy's nose goblins chimes in

c_walt: I agree; you are tiresome. I thought we’d amicably agreed to disagree, but here you are again, reducing me to being merely a Dungy hater while addressing none of the points made in the thread.

Let’s turn your chicken-shit ad hoc argument on you instead; you’re a Dungy Nazi. Which means you hate a lot of people, including those on this thread who agreed with me (more Dungy haters!). In this thread, you prove yourself a Bob Sanders hater too, as you blast him for his “fragility,” instead of respecting him as the only guy on the team who risked his career and long-term health and who didn’t merely arm-tackle or get out of a charging Fred Taylor’s way, and who deserves better than take-a-hike-Melvin-Bullitt-will-do.

Bye for now, Dungy Nazi.

Ad hominem, not ad hoc

Sorry about that, Dungy Nazi.

by N Colter on Oct 9, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, and to answer your question

No, Dungy didn’t kill my dog, but he royally screwed over Bob Sanders with his undersized philosophy.

by N Colter on Oct 10, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um, I hope you know that you responded to your own comment

and not coltsfanawalt.

Anyway, how did Dungy’s undersized philosophy screw over Sanders? Dungy’s philosophy gave guys like Sanders, Freeney, Mathis, and Brackett a chance to make an impact in a league where size supposedly matters.

Your Dungy bashing is getting really old and annoying especially since the man has retired. Just stop it.

"Do I believe in aliens?" Stephon Marbury asked. "I don't know, because I've never seen one. But I believe in Jesus because I saw him in the shower the other day."

+21

read my sig its from the Dungy Era

The way our defense is set up, it puts me in situations where I'm one-on-one in making tackles on running backs. When I go into it, I think I am going to win. It really doesn't matter the size, height, weight, whatever. I'm not afraid of putting my body in there." - Bob Sanders

by coltsfan723 on Oct 12, 2009 11:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It was an addendum to my previous comment so it's placed correctly

All the injuries on defense (including Bob’s) and the fact that the defense couldn’t get off the field and a failure to deny teams on third-and-short to me indicates a lack of size. But we can agree to disagree.

Again, I don’t hate Dungy; I just disagreed with his philosophy. And it often seems that people were eager to blame everything else for the team’s past shortcomings, including Bob’s “fragility.”

But you’re right, it’s history now. I was primarily motivated not for an excuse to bash Dungy but by all the indifference and callousness directed toward Bob. I’m hoping he comes back healthy and makes the present team that’s dong great even better. Regards.
