Kyle DeVan 2nd look
I lost my DVR recording of the game so I had to settle for the NFL Network Replay of the game so I'll have to settle for missing some plays. I spent this specifically watching DeVan on every offensive play they showed. Here's a breakdown of what I saw.
1st quarter: Looks very comfortable in pass protection. Fights well with his hands
Strong when running the ball as well
Beaten on 2 pass plays, Both bull rushes, 25 pass plays seen
2 plays skipped
2nd quarter: Second level too quick on stuffed run play
Beat by spin move inside and speed to the outside on consecutive pass plays during 2 minute drill. Manning saves his sack stats.
9 pass plays, 1 run play seen, 9 plays skipped
Rest of the game after the jump
3rd quarter: Only three plays here. None shown4th quarter: Pancaked by straight ahead bull rush, Led to sack by other defender, no where to step up.
Good timing moving to second level on run play and seal off on draw to his side. Back to back rushes gain 19 yards.
Nice blitz adjustment across the line on Collie catch
Left Double team too early and that man made the tackle on stuffed run
Didn't really throw a block on the Addai TD. Looking for someone to hit, but didn't have much luck.
10 passes, 7 runs seen, 3 plays skipped
Overall Thoughts:
While DeVan did not play a perfect game by any stretch, he showed flashes where he was VERY good. He looks the most confident in pass blocking. He did get beat more times than I initially thought. Most of his beats were on plays where the defender switched up the rush technique he was using. He fights well with his hands but needs more work reading the defender. I would be interested to see the whole game film to find out if there are things that I couldn't see on this video. There are things that need to be addressed quickly to make us a better team, but I still call him an upgrade over Pollack. Just one mans opinion. Anyone else got one?

I noticed on one run play that went nowhere
that DeVan took his guy ~5 yards beyond the LOS, but other guys missed their blocks.

Here's the deal though...
The difference between an average starter and a pro bowler is usually two or three blocks per game. DeVan, Pollack and to a lesser extent CJ are losing quite a bit more than 2 or 3 blocks when compared to a pro bowler. Tells me they’re not even average starters at this point. I say, at this point, because I do believe cohesiveness is a big part of line play; therefore, they should improve as time passes. The 49ers were the only top 10 defense we’ve faced (DVOA) and the Pats are performing similarly. I wouldn’t be surprised to see our offense perform about like we did against San Fran unless Peyton is razor sharp.

If he was getting beat with technique changes...
That sounds like it will get better with experience. I can say I feel more comfortable with him in – it looks like the coaches do as well.
I really hope we spend a few picks on the O Line this year.
I know Polian went after three centers two years ago (probably for their smarts), but I hope he goes after some tackles this year. Oh I long for the day of Tarik Glenn!!!
