Why Peyton Manning has thrown the ball 98 times in the last 2 games...

Okay...so I have been eagerly watching every video I can leading up to this game trying to see what people think the advantages for each team will be. One in particular is this bullshit about Manning attempting 98 passes in the last 2 games. Okay lets look at this for a minute...do you honestly think Peyton WANTS to throw the ball that much? Me personally I don't think so. I could be wrong, but this is all opinion here. One thing the media hasn't pointed out is that Donald Brown has been out for the last 2 games. Brown may not get a ton of carries but he is a huge part of the Colts run game. With Brown out, Addai has to run the ball, catch passes, and take the hits from blitzers. This league is not a one back league anymore and right now the Colts are basically working with one back. Sure Simpson comes in from time to time, but all he does is loose yards do we can't really count him here. The absence of Brown, in my opinion, is what has caused Peyton to have to throw so much. Addai would be wore out and beat up if we ran the ball like we needed to and have to worry about picking up blitzes and catching passes. Especially against 2 hard hitting defenses in Houston and San Fransisco. Not to mention the fact that Manning is probably calling these passes cause most of the time he sees a favorable mismatch. I don't know...what are some of your opinions on this? The media seems to be emphasizing this as a huge advantage to the Pats.

I agree

I think Brown returning to the offense this week will be a huge factor in the game this weekend.

Good post but... eh..

Good post overall except for this..

“The media seems to be emphasizing this as a huge advantage to the Pats”

Since when is putting the ball in the hands of (arguably) the best player in history favorable for the opponent? Unless he throws 60, half of which being forced i think were ok. Lets not forget the reason hes so good because his “forces” are more accurate than relaxed throws for the average QB.

Don't listen to the media...

don’t do it. Don’t get sucked in…it will always end badly. I have learned this from experience. Trust me.

I just think we all would like to see a more balanced game, yes? I like 60-40 pass-run, personally. But if Peyton sees a mismatch, he’ll take it and I agree that is what he did especially last week against the 9ers. I also agree that we need Brown. Addai can’t do it all and he has been. Simpson seems to me like just a warm body to have out there to give Joe a breather.

The media isn’t taking anything that you pointed out into account. And why would they? That would be way to insightful for them. I learned a while ago that we know our team better than the MSM idgits. They always seem to be missing the point, imo.

I just walk away

I was eating lunch earlier this week and Skip Bayless was on First and 10 talking about how he thinks Peyton is overrated because he only has 1 ring, and the Colts beat a Rex Grossman-lead Bears team to get it. What does that have anything to do with Peyton being overrated? He also mentioned how Big P is liked from his commercial, so his likeablility plays into him being overrated. Again, Huh?! MSM just continues to try to grasp at straws and try to prove why Peyton isn’t a top three all-time great right now. First it was not having a ring, now it’s for not going against a quality opponent to get the ring and he must get one more to be considered an all-time great? Excuse my language, ptb, but that has to be the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard!

Rings aren’t and shouldn’t define a quarterback’s career. Johnny U is considered the greatest QB in history, but only has 1 Super Bowl ring, right? Elway, played in 5 Super Bowls and won two; he’s in the top 10. Dan Marino went to the Super Bowl XIX, loss and never went back, but he’s in the top 5 all-time QBs. Like that article someone posted weeks ago: There’s no more “but”, Peyton’s just great.

Oh, the excuse the MSM uses to say why the Colts won’t win the Super Bowl (even though the playoffs start 2 months from now) is all of the injuries they have, boo hoo. Injuries are apart of the game, but I don’t think that’s a good enough reason to hold the Colts back. Yes, the secondary is thin, but it’s playing really good. Whenever Hayden comes back, I personally will feel even more confident about this team.

I still don’t think the Pats are better than us and the difference between the Colts and the Steelers really isn’t that significant. I actually find it as a compliment that the media doesn’t see any major flaws to our offense, defense, and our good special teams play and that they have to use injuries as their lame accuse for why the Colts won’t win it all.

Because beating a Jake Delhomme-led team is

that much more impressive. Or a team whose #1WR has a broken ankle and still puts up a century on you.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

Correlation does not equal causation.

They threw a lot because that’s what the game plan was. Sunday’s game plan could very well involve a lot more running.

Are you a psychology major

or professor because you mention a lot research things like correlation and regression towards the mean? Just sayin’ :-).

Like this?

Seriously, though, I’m sure the game plan did include running the ball less and passing a lot more. As I am sure when they were making said game plan they were factoring in the very strong possibility that they would be operating essentially with only one effective running back. Running a game plan that would leave that back winded and in need of rotating out often with no one to take his place wouldn’t be smart.
In other words:
Game plan without a lot of running=Joe Addai on the field 95% of the time protecting Peyton, catching passes, rushing in limited amounts

Game plan with a lot of running=Joe Addai on the field 70% of the time, picking up more rushing yardage, but 30% of the time leaving Chad Simpson or Mike Hart to block for Peyton and catch passes (which equals more dropped passes and even more sacks, knock-downs and hurries for Peyton)

I think they trust those guys just fine to catch the ball… but the blocking is the main reason Addai played 90% of the snaps. He’s just so much better than, well, anyone.

I've been thinking the same thing

better to spread the ball around passing than wear out addai even when you are getting good ypc on the ground.

Peyton threw a lot against the Texans and 49ers because they dared him to.

With any other QB that might be a disadvantage, but Peyton is no ordinary QB.
That’s what the talking heads seem to forget. Peyton defies logic.

they dared him to, huh?

Playing a lot of zone, having 0 linemen on 3rd and 2, rarely blitzing, playing a lot of coverage, all of those are daring a QB to throw? Where I come from, thats daring a team to run. These team is passing because it can’t run.

Being an asshole doesn't make you wrong. :)

He threw alot

because of the ineffectiveness of the running game. When you cant run effectively against nickle and dime packages, it tells you that running the ball is pointless. Lets hope that they can find a way to run against the Patriots to keep their defense honest. You cant be predictable against Belichick. After 10 straight games, Im sure Peyton knows that.

by metal_militia on Nov 14, 2009 10:04 PM EST reply actions

Personally, I think Peyton is so good

that the Patriots could drop eleven guys back in coverage and Peyton could throw it every play and still find his guys. Yes, that’s how good he is!
