Five Things I Think I Know: Armageddon Edition
Im still in awe and amazement over this win, We knew we had something special in this team, now there is no doubt. Lets get to the five starting with the most controversial issue.
1.) I think Belichick made the right call on that 4th and 2. Personally, I thought the odds were better of getting a stop if they punted (though I dont think they would have), but this was the right call for a few reasons. If the Patriots had converted the fourth and two, victory is assured and why wouldn't you place trust with an offense that features Tom Brady, Randy Moss, and Wes Welker? The Colts are known for giving up a majority of third/fourth and shorts. In these kinds of situations, you want to put the ball in your best players hands. The best players the Patriots have are on offense. The Colts defense simply wanted it more.
2.) I think we need Gonzo back sooner rather than later. Unless Garcon (and to a lesser extent, Collie) get out of their funk of dropping easy passes that are perfectly placed in their hands, Gonzo's absence will be felt hard. They have to stop playing like rookies (even though they essentially are rookies, yes that even includes Garcon) and start playing like the Vets they looked like at the beginning of the season. This is a major reason the offense has been struggling of late. As my friend likes to say when we play football, "no hands, no future".
3.) I think the defense, though not as worrisome, is still troubling at times. Perhaps we (or at least I) was a little to confident that the loss of Hayden and Jackson will produce very little drop off. Did I think there might be lapses? Yeah, but I never thought I would see what transpired through the first half of that New England game yesterday. The only guy I have almost full confidence in right now, is Jarraud Powers. He has been absolutely phenominal in his first year. Lacey is good and I think he has the room to be better, but he still isnt ready to compete against some of the elite receivers in this game (Moss and Johnson made that very evident the last two weeks). Jennings? ugh, keep him to nickle and dime please. The reason why i dont have full blown panic, is because they really stepped it up in the second half.
4.) I think that a win in both of these next two games could all but lock up the AFC South title. Im not going to say the Colts locked it up yet, because right now the rest of the division is picking up there play. The Titans have reeled off three in a row, The Jags are above .500 and the Texans had a week off to correct there mistakes. In the NFL, there is no rest for the weary, even those that have an unblemished record. If you watched Caldwells presser today, he is preaching the same thing.
5.) I think the Bengals are going to win the AFC North. They have a sweep over the Steelers and Ravens, the two main competitors for the division as well as a win over the Browns. This means they are 5-0 in the division and have the best record in the division for the rest of the season. Those are huge tiebreakers that are vital for a division title. The only way the Bengals lose there grip, is if they have a catastrophic breakdown. With the way that defense is playing, I dont see it happening.
Fire away guys, this victory was sweet.

My five
1. Agree that it was the right call, though maybe the wrong play
2. Give me Gonzo and give him to me now!
3. Imagine what we can do once Hayden returns!
4. I feel confident about the Ravens, a little less so about the Texans, but love the way our team kept their minds in the game and never gave up the fight.
5. I still think the Dolphins will give the Pats a run for their money (oh please please please please please)
How can you not love a team that does this?

My fingers crossed guess
He is back for the Houston game OR he AND Vinatieri both return for the Tennessee game
9-0 feels oh so good. Bring on the Ravens....

4.
Winning the next two games will clinch the afc south. We will be 11-5 worset case scenario and after beating Houston in the second of the two games they will be 11-5 best case scenario and we beat them twice head to head…

Don't forget the Jags
Jacksonville is 5-4 and could certainly win their next two (Buffalo & @SanFran).
Three games from now the Colts play the Titans at home. Win that one too and we’ve got the best division record and we definitely clinch.

re: Gonzo
I saw him on the sidelines last night, don’t know if this was mentioned, but I don’t remember seeing him around in past weeks. Hopefully this is a small sign that he’s getting close.
Never doubt Peyton Manning, he’ll make you look silly

surgery was on Nov 5th
and I think the estimate was a return within 2-3 weeks; my bold prediction is that he’ll be back in time for the Texans, but not the Ravens

so funny how much 6 weeks can change
6 weeks ago Garcon was clearly playing to his ceiling, which seemed higher than Gonzo’s, and now Gonzo will be a welcomed, much needed addition. Even Collie has been playing like a rookie (that bastard). Hope to have all hands on deck the rest of the way, another season ending injury, esp to WR or DB, would be killer.

Garçon was never higher than Gonzo
At least not in the eyes of one very important man. Remember, Peyton loves him some Gonzo.

I think that Collie is playing very well for a rookie
Last night he did drop that one pass that was right on the numbers and the other target that he didn’t catch was thrown wide by Manning. Collie was targeted 8 times and caught six of them. And some of those catches were for important first downs. Not to bad.
Garcon has been Mr. Butterfingers. He was targeted 11 times and he caught only 3. I mean come on. Give Collie that many throws and he catches for over 100 yards.

collie to a lesser extent

I'll agree that Garcon drops passes,
but you have to consider the type of receivers they are when looking at targets/receptions. Collie is a possession receiver and Garcon is more of a deep threat. It is to be expected that Collie has a higher percentage of receptions per target than Garcon.

Garcon
Too inconsistent, makes some unbelievable catches but misses on a lot of gimmies. A very frustrating player because Manning is forced to go back to him but we never know what we are going to get.
I agree that Gonzo being back will bring more consistency to the offense which is all we need. I love those 10+ play drives that methodically move the ball downfield and result in a TD.

way too inconsistent
emillier17 is right though in saying that Garcon is starting to have a stinging feeling from those drops and I think thats exactly what he needs. He said after that game, that once he sees the replay of the drop, he is going to feel disappointment again. He better, because he has made way too many easy drops that have killed drives.

My Five
1) The roof being closed helped pump up the team. Caldwell said it after the game. It was LOUD in there!
2) I think Garcon grew up a bit this game. He felt the sting of the drops and penalties and kept his head up and ran an AMAZING Slugo for that TD.
3) The Hoodie didn’t out coach Caldwell as national media is saying. The Pats out executed the Colts for the first 3 quarters. There were openings for the Colts, but they did not capitalize. We all know the game is 60 minutes though.
4) Peyton is in the Hoodie’s head more than the other way around. Nice switch to see. 5 years ago Billy doesn’t go for that!
5) Coyer underwhelmed in person yesterday. Our D looked very vanilla. It was like he was afraid to throw a curve ball at the Pats. I could tell the coverage 3 plays out of 4. I never played QB and if I can tell Brady can tell. I was hoping to see more disguises. I still love that he brought Brackett on the blitz on the last play. Brady only had time for one look because of pressure up the middle.

Agree to an extent
about the way the defense performed early in the game. I think that both of those big plays to Moss could have been avoided if Bethea or Bullitt (one each) had been more disciplined and not committed to a run so early. The Pats were effective running the ball, but they weren’t going to beat us by running the ball all game so our guys should have known that they would try for a couple deep balls.
I actually thought that the Colts would have doubled Moss the entire game because he is the only way that they would beat us. I would accept Welker getting his underneath stuff in exchange for Moss having a couple big plays because more times than not our offense is going to outscore the other team.
9-0 feels oh so good. Bring on the Ravens....

I saw both of Moss'
early long catches as just being great execution by a great football team. The first play over the middle held Brackett up to the line with the run action and he missed the ball by inches. Bullitt was expecting the coverage to be there and it almost was. Perfectly executed play.
The TD to Moss was caught in spite of perfect coverage by Bethea. It was a zone scheme on that play and Lacey let Moss release to the safety as the play called for. Bethea stayed right with him and made the catch tough. Just a better play by Moss on a perfect throw. Again, better execution on the Pats side.
I agree that Coyer should have done something a little different with Moss. Calling a play that sets up Bethea to be in single coverage if Moss goes downfield is a bit odd, but Bethea did everything he could and was in perfect coverage on the play. Moss just got the catch.

Re: #3
I can’t remember who I heard say it before the game, but one of the analysts was saying that at some point in the game, the coach was going to have to make a crucial call, and that when that happened, it would be a game-deciding moment. Funny part was that the analyst was actually talking about CALDWELL, not Belichick. God I love me some Schadenfreude.

Defense
The thing I like most about the defense this year is that when the game is close or coming down to the wire, they bring pressure and have the ability to play press coverage on the outside to force a quick throw or INT. It happened against Jacksonville, Houston and New England.
This is something we never saw with the Dungy/Meeks defense. I was proud of how they forced the issue towards the end of the game.

Credit to...
Brackett for learning something new and getting good at it. His timing has been quite good on those blitzes. That takes some talent and football smarts. He is not getting any national coverage for that, but I think we all agree that he is making a difference there.
by emiller17 on Nov 16, 2009 11:07 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Also
Brackett and Session did a great job of confusing Brady a little on both the 3rd and 4th down plays. I’m not sure if they were actually making a defensive play call at the line, but they gave the impression of it and it made Brady hesitate just enough for Powers and then Bullitt to make the plays.
9-0 feels oh so good. Bring on the Ravens....

One more thing
It seems that every time Peyton faces a good defense or “brilliant” defensive mind, he struggles for the first half of the game while trying to figure out what the other team is doing. The Colts usually fall behind during this time. But once #18 figures it out, you can almost tell immediately and the Colts start rolling.
Once the Colts start rolling, there is nothing you can do about it. As soon as Manning has you figured out, you are going down. That’s why Bells went for it at the end of the game. It was the only way they were going to win that game because he knew that Manning was going to end it either by going 70 yards or 30 yards.
9-0 feels oh so good. Bring on the Ravens....

Agreed...
It is very much like a switch going off. My only problem with the 4th down play is that I would have run it. Our interior line got dominated all day. Very few stops for zero of negative yards. I don’t know why he would just pound it down the throat.

My 5
1. After this game, Garcon will play better. Like the Pierre we all loved from the first games. He will be more confident after that great TD catch and that amazing comeback.
2. Even if I think Garcon will improve, we need Gonzo as soon as possible. Garcon and Collie, as a rookie WR will have drops at times. #11 is just so secure that, together with Reggie and Dallas, they might give Collie and Garcon less passes thrown to them, making them feel less pressure without being constant targets.
3. That stadium roof must stay closed for the rest of the season. It must, but won’t unfortunately.
4. If Freeney is contained, you can always count on Rob Mathis. That guy is just so amazing. He is always running, always trying to make a play and always playing a 110%. So underrated, so great.
5. Addai is playing great football right now. Even with the injury he had, he had a couple TD’s. He was a key in the last drive playing smart football and not trying to reach the endzone (he wouldve reached it if he wanted to).
I don’t need to say Peyton is best QB in the NFL. Everybody knows that. If you don’t, you are just as idiot as those guys who left the Luke before the game ended.

I love how Harrison and Bruschi disagreed with their ex coach on the “call”.
Everyone is saying Peyton didn’t have a “great” game, in my mind, since we won, it was great enough.
This team fights for 60 minutes. And I think they fed off the crowd.
Speaking of the crowd- the twelfth man really came through, even after Peyton threw his interceptions, the crowd was loud!
Any fan who left early should be ashamed of themselves, and stay home. Free up the tickets for the people who REALLY LOVE this team.

Peyton and the "great" game
How many QBs in the league would give their left nut for 327 yards passing, 4 TDs and the win?
Just goes to show how alone Peyton is in his own universe. When he doesn’t totally annihilate the opposing defense people shrug and say it wasn’t one of his “great” games. By the time he retires people will be going “meh” if Peyton hasn’t scored two touchdowns before the coin toss.
Never approach a vast undertaking with a half-vast plan.

Powers/Lacey
To be honest, the thrashing we took in the first half from Moss was not on the corners, it was primarily on the linebackers and safeties who failed to adjust when Moss moved around. No, Lacey didn’t knock down every pass to Moss, or force a turnover, but when he had Moss in coverage he was right with him, even on the Bethea interception Lacey was right there.
Lacey, like most corners in the NFL, is physically limited in his ability to cover Moss, Johnson, and those kinds of guys due to a massive size disadvantage. Simply put, all things considered, Lacey and Powers had very strong games, and the majority of the coverage blame should fall on the nickel, safeties, and linebackers.
Just my 2cp.

actually, I agree to a certin point
I noticed that some of those deep completions to moss were designed by scheme as they were zone plays. The Corners responsibility after a certain point, is to pass off the player to another guy in zone. However, I just felt he struggled a bit on the shorter zones where he was responsible fro making the play as the Patriots were moving the chains early and often.

Bethea had great coverage
on that long pass. You watch the replay, he was ALL OVER Moss, was about two inches from breaking it up or picking it off. But it’s Randy Moss, you couldn’t cover that guy with a blanket.
by slash196 on Nov 17, 2009 11:30 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I don't disagree slash
That Bethea was even able to stick with Moss at a dead-spring like that, and blanket him as much as he did was impressive. It took a great catch by Moss for the play to work.
That said, he reacted too slowly and never should have allowed Moss to “get by him”, that is a safeties job when the receiver runs a pattern like that. If the receiver gets behind you on that play, you got beat and are responsible for the play. Hard facts, but true ones.
Again, I give him credit for his hustle and determination but the play was his responsibility.
