Ask Baltimore Beatdown: Questions for the Ravens Blogger
Hey Colts fan, it's Bruce from Baltimore Beatdown. Looking forward to a real tough match up and a chance to derail your undefeated season this weekend in Baltimore. While that was looking to be a real possibility earlier in the season, the way our Ravens and your Colts are playing right now, it would take a great game from us combined with a poor one by you to make our wishes come true. However, this is the NFL and who knows what can happen, right? Right?
Anyway, post your thoughts and questions here and between now and game day I'll stop back to respond from a Ravens point of view. Let's both do our best to keep the Baltimore vs. Indianapolis Colts issue out of this. However, I'm sure the Matt Stover signing by you guys with our kicker just being released is sure to be a hot topic as it already is here in B-More.
At the same time, feel free to click on the link above to come on over to The Beatdown to join and post your thoughts as well. Thanks and see you!
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

So who IS your kicker now?
Haven’t kept up with the Ravens that much this year. The only game I’ve watched before Monday was the Cincy/Baltimore game and just during commercials of the Houston/Indy game. But I thought after your near losses against NE and MIN that you were still an excellent team. Then I see some of your game against Cleveland and can’t figure out if this is the same team. Why was your offense so ineffective against the Browns?
Im a colts fan but..
I dont believe they have a kicker now as the rookie they were using just got kick after missing another makable field goal and extra point this past weekend against Cleveland
Hauschka's worse than Cundiff?
Yikes

That could be a bad thing on our part. I’m not sure why he was so good in Indy, but failed in Tampa, but I hope after this season the Colts think about trying him out again. He looked great for us.
Bob Sanders does not play Hide-and-Seek, He plays HIDE and PRAY-HE-DOES-NOT FIND-YOU!
We also looked at Mike Nugent whom I thought was the better of the two
but I think Nugent might have said “no thanks” for some reason.

How is Flacco performing this year?
Last year he did better than what everyone expected and the Ravens were successful. Is this success continuing this year?
Flacco has made huge strides
and should come close to 4000 yards, as the Ravens are throwing a lot more than anyone expected.

What adjustments will your team have to make with Suggs out?
How can you not love a team that does this?
Not much we can do to replace
our best pass rusher. Quinn’s hit, while not a deliberate attempt to injure, was on purpose and aimed below his knees. Brady should be fined more than Ray Lewis was for his hit on Ocho Cinco a month ago ($25K), and should also be forced to miss as much time as he is making Suggs miss, which might be as much as the rest of the season.

sadly Mangini
may make that happen. Not because of the hit but because he can’t decide which is the lesser of two evils at QB.

What do you think about the perfomance of the Ravens' defense so far this season?
I belive it giving up 2 additional points per game than last season. Is that because of the departure of Rex Ryan?
Peyton Manning makes it Wayne on them hoes!!!!
Nothing to do w/ Rex
but the defense has been truly disappointing. The players are just not executing and it all starts with the non-existent pass rush.

Who will fill in for Terrell Suggs? Is he even going to be out of the game? How large (or small) is the impact of his loss?
You all have a great franchise, and I was sad to hear that Suggs got taken out on a low block by Quinn. I’m sure this game will be very tough for us, regardless of your record or Suggs’ injury.
@lefpsyd
erbaps the rookie Paul Kruger
who hasn’t had much playing time so far this season. Hard to make up for the loss of your best pass rusher when your pass rush wasn’t that good to begin with.
Hope we play over our heads and you do the opposite, but I doubt it. Just want the game to be competitive through the second half.

Does Orton make it Marshall on dem hoes? Does Garrard make it Walker-Sims on dem hoes? Does Sanchez make it Edwards on dem hoes? Finally, does Bills QB make it Bills WR on dem hoes?

How is Flacco doing
this year? From what I’ve seen, many QB’s who had success as a rookie fall back to Earth in their 2nd year. Have you seen that from Flacco?

which is impressive because he essentially
took the game off last Sunday. Not physically or mentally, he was just shut down. Had some great blocks though.

4 catches, 65 yards

Our o-line has been pretty stout
with big bookend tackles in Gaither (6’9", 345#) and the well known rookie Michael Oher at RT. Freeney will get his but I love Oher’s nastiness and expect him to be our LT one day in the not so distant future. Go see the movie later this week and read the book, The Blind Side, as it is a great one.

Do any Ravens fans get mad about how much Ray Lewis whines about things?
A few weeks ago he went nuts about how the rules were unfair because the Ravens couldn’t hit Brady in the knees. Then he comes out and throws a hissy because Brady Quinn hit Suggs in the knees. I know the rules are different, but it drives me crazy how the guy cries about everything that doesn’t go the Ravens’ way.
Funny thing is...
…most players totally agree w/ him and so do I. He isn’t whining and the league should listen to people like him. The rules are so favorable to the “stars” of the NFL that it is hard to not laugh when Tom Brady gestures and then the refs throw the flag. I said in an earlier column that they should just cutr out the middle man and give Brady a yellow bean bag flag to throw ion his own. Knowing how Brady has done against you guys, you should agree w/ me.

I'm pretty sure I'd be complaining if Dwight grazed Tom Brady's knee...
and got a penalty from it and then on the next play Freeney intercepts Brady. Brady is then the last line of defense and aims for Freeney’s knees and Freeney goes down with a season ending injury.
So, yeah. I’d be agreeing with Lewis about that.

Ngata practiced and
said he was ready to play. I think he could of played against Cleveland but why not wait for this week instead, which was the right decision. As good as he is against the run, he is not the pass rusher we need and will miss with Suggs out.

How good do you think the Ravens are? I know you have lost a number of games closed and most pundits think you are far better then your record, but god knows I don’t trust those jackasses.
From the highlights I’ve seen, it just doesn’t seem like the same old Ravens as far as the defense, which is not a good thing. Flacco is very good, but does he have anyone to throw to other than mason?
I think a better version of what i’m asking is: what are the relative strengths and weaknesses of THIS ravens team. I just don’t know how to deal with a non-defense oriented team that can’t complete a pass 20+ yards.
How good (or bad) are my Ravens?
Depends on which Ravens team shows up. The one that dominates the teams we should, or the one that is good enough to compete with the better teams but puts itself in a hole that they just fall short at the end? Well, since Indy isn’t the Chiefs or Browns, I’d guess the latter group. I will find it hard to expect a Ravens victory unless we play lights out and you play like kah-kah.

Beating the Colts
Thank you for not re-hashing the Indy vs Baltimore thing: very few people knew the truth of the matter, or what it was like sitting in Memorial stadium this time of year with the fog.
I was at the Miami game this year, it showed you cant say beating the Colts is contigent on keeping ball away from Manning.
Best defense is nickle and dime packages as done by SF, Texans and NE. Colts dont have the offensive line they had in 2006, they cant run consistently even when its conceded by defense. Problem I see for Ravens,,,this defense is very different then their normal attack style defense, I doubt if you can adjust that drastically for just one game, especially tough because Ravens played Monday night. Also, Ravens dont have an Andre Johnson, or Randy Moss to exploit Colts secondary.. best they can hope for,,keep game close and hope for turnovers.
But then you have the Denver game
where our defense played like last year’s. Then again, I guess we also exposed the Broncos for the pretenders that they are.

Glad to see this is more civil than last time you came over here.
My questions:
1) How’s your interior offensive line? I know that the running game is still solid and that Rice is scary to me, and I know how your tackles play… no idea about the interior guys though.
2) Where does Ngata live? Address please, as well as gate codes. If you could leave me a crowbar that’d help too. (Sorry – I just think they don’t have any chance without him AND Suggs.)
3) What, if anything, has changed about the pass defense since those games earlier this year when they got shredded?
4) Ray Lewis got a bit too much credit for that one stop on Sproles, given that it was a play they had run before and well, nobody blocked him. But he still seems to be a force, even after all these years. Has he lost a step? Is he still a dominant player, or simply a very good one that is famous?
5) Are they going to wear all black including pants? Cause that’s ugly.
6) Why haven’t I heard Todd Heap’s name all year?
7) Assuming Ngata plays and both teams execute reasonably well (let’s say they operate at like 90% of capacity and don’t have a ref who throws a billion flags)… what are your predictions for this game? 160+ yards on the ground for Baltimore but 350 for Peyton? Low scoring affair?
Willy, you catch more flies (or DTs) with honey than with vinegar
I bring Ngata cookies and you offer a crow bar? Which do yo uhtink he’ll open his door for?
I love Ray Rice and have since college. I have a soft spot for Rutgers as a good chunk of my HS class went there and I like how they revived their program in recent years. (Was it EVER alive this century? Maybe they “vived” it?) Rice worries me more than Faulk did last week (and Faulk was a big concern for me and, apparenlty, Dungy too) simply because he’s on the field more and seems to carry the ball with a fierceness. Think MJD with Ray Lewis’s mentality. If Colts can get comfortable with their containment of Mason and Heap hurting them semi-deep, I think they can then close the envelope tighter on the run and short pass game.
I hope Freeney busts loose out of frustration and starts another 9-game streak.
As Bruce pointed out, the Ravens are an inconsistent team and predicting a final is tough. It could be one of our traditional recent no-contest games, or could end up like SF/Hou where we’re not really concerned about losing, but think we should win more thoroughly (on paper, at least).
I am of the opinion that we should start taking a preseason approach to games—not that we don’t care who wins, but that we find out what we have, who can do what, and try different personnel packages in different situations, so that when we hit week 19, we’re holding a hand of about eight cards and the opponents are only holding five. Depending on how the game unfolds, new schemes, injuries, etc, we can just play the card we tried out in week 12 for a series, etc. Balt is a good but not great team, so gives us a ’real-world" lab to test things in, as opposed to playing the Chiefs/Raiders and trying things against them.
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.
Ravens also seem
to play up or down to their level of competition. That said, it means we will show up and just not roll over like you or some people may think.

1) Ben Grubbs at LG is a former first round pick from 2007, Matt Birk at Center from Minnesota and Chris Chestor at RG. All have been great for us this year, especially Birk. Birk is the older one of the group, as our other 4 guys are all under 27. Chestor has player nearly every position on the line and is actually a back up TE if we ever need him. Willing to switch alot. One thing you need to watch out for though is when Oher and Gaither line up next to each other on the left side. Many should consider our O-Line to be one of the best in the AFC.
2)
(Sorry – I just think they don’t have any chance without him AND Suggs.)
Don’t apologize. It is definitely going to be tough without our two best pass rushers. Suggs is definitely not playing, but Ngata has been practicing this week and I just cannot see him missing a game like this.
3) Not much man. It really hasn’t. We looked good against Denver because they play a short offense. But other teams have lit us up. Wayne should be able to manhandle Foxworth and Washington. The fate of the secondary this weekend is going to be with Ed Reed. He must play one of his best games of the year if we want to stop slow down Peyton.
4) The fact though that it was Ray making a play like that is what made that play great. Of course it was a wide open tackle, but Ray making it is what was great. We needed someone to step up, make a play to end the game, and Ray did that. He is still…………serviceable. Still is great at getting his men where they need to be, motivator, all the things you think of when you say Ray Lewis.
5)
Are they going to wear all black including pants? Cause that’s ugly.
Won’t even go there. You just disrespected the greatest uniforms in the league. The all black is god like.
6) Heap started off on fire in the beginning of the season and was a huge part of our offense. We would like to see more, but Ray Rice is who has gotten alot of Heap’s looks.
7) Of course I have to say Ravens win 26-21. Peyton will get his, I am well aware of that. If we can get an interception on him, that would be huge. If the Ravens are to lose though, I hope to see a good game. I just cannot see us losing this one by 20 like we are used to. Should be one of the best games of the year. You guys have to admit however that we are not a team you really want to see right now.
You have to hate losing more than you love winning.
Answers:
1. O-line is a strong point, if we stay out of the penalties.
2. Ngata lives at…..wait, crowbar,…nevermind. He eats at a lot of local buffets though.
3. Pass defense is totallly a result of the pass rush. If we get one, we’ aces, if not, we’re toast.
4. Ray is still a great player, might have sacrificed speed for smarts but still understands the game as good as any.
5. Black, better than the black pants w/ white tops that make them look fat, especially the o-line guys.
6. If you know where Heap’s been, let all of Baltimore know as well. He’s been around but not enough!
7. Bet the house on the over, but I do not like our chances in a shootout and can’t see our defense stopping you so we’ll have to open up the playbook and try to keep up. Thanks!

I don’t know about you guys, but I was pissed when Ngata took that cheap shot at Garcon. I mean, he’s a freaking nose tackle taking a shot at a wide receivers kidneys! On the ground! On a play that LOST yardage! How petty do you have to be to do that?
I lost all respect for the Ravens defense after that. That kind of thing is just unacceptable, and stupid. It’s also institutional.

Offensive line question
I haven’t seen any Raven games so the only thing I know about Michael Oher is he has a book and movie about his life. My question is how do you guys think he will do against Colts DE Robert Mathis? Mathis is a bad ass to say the least and Oher is just a rookie. Just by knowing that I think Mathis will have a big day. What do you guys think?

Oher is a nice kid off the field
and a nasty guy on it. I’ve seen him play w/o his helmet and block a defenseman over the field from one side to the other. He’ll push you around and do more even if you’re on the ground. While I don’t like Gaither’s chances against Freeney, I do like and look forward to the Oher-Mathis battle.
Thanks!
