Pereira Wishy-Washy on Official Review
The NFL gave everyone reason to continue debating whether the Pats actually converted on the infamous 4th down by featuring Mike "it could have gone either way" Pereira. He praised the ref for making a decisive call, but said that the call would not likely have been overturned regardless of how it was called on the field.
So I'm being a bit sarcastic here, because in fact I agree - I don't think the call could have been overturned. Nevertheless it would have been nice to hear that the call was 100% the right one.

yeah, nothing like a 'glowing endorsement' of the official
from referee spokesman himself to put a definitive end to the discussion. Sheesh.
Keep the faith!
he's clearly in a pickle
has he ever said any of the calls were wrong? I think he’s only agreed with the call, or said it could have gone either way. He’d probably be taken to task if he ever said the ref made the wrong call.
How can you not love a team that does this?
he has
but it’s rare. He’ll only acknowledge it if it’s blatantly wrong and he has no outs to hide behind. Lately they’ve been putting that part of the segment on the website but not on the show (sort of a bonus footage thing, likely gambling that fewer people will watch it) but I’ve seen him admit that it should’ve been called differently many times.
In this case though, he could dance around it a bit based on the fact that it was so tough to tell from those angles. Eisen could’ve even asked directly “don’t you think he was over the 30 at this point [freezes frame] when he had one foot on either side of it?” and Pereira still could’ve said it was too tough to call. Which is not untrue.

He is wishy washy on the spot itself because the angles make it impossible to tell. This is why it’d be upheld wherever they spotted it. But that’s a ton of ammunition for the Pats fans, because what he was very clear about was that he gets forward progress at the spot where the ball was secured, regardless of his feet, and NOT at the point where he landed.
This gives the Pats fans a pretty legit gripe. It’s entirely possible that forward progress was on the 30. In fact, I’d say it’s somewhat likely. But the cameras can’t tell us that, and Stabile can’t tell us that with 100% accuracy either.
So yeah, it’s great that he was decisive and saw the bobble and called it… but it’s lucky that he spotted it where he did. Because if he put it directly in the middle of the 30 we wouldn’t have any case either.
I’m going to guess that BBS doesn’t retract his statements about Witzel being nothing but a whiny Pats sympathizer though. If I may:
Wetzel is wrong in his replay assessment. Completely, flatly, and blatantly wrong. Tom Brady’s pass hit Kevin Faulk in the hands. He was then met hard and driven back by Melvin Bullitt, forcing Faulk to bobble the ball. Bullitt drove Faulk back and by the time Faulk had complete and total possession of the football, he was a yard short. Using the TV “line” is not official. It is where the stick are on the sidelines, and from the vantage point of just about every possible TV angle, Faulk had possession when he was one his back, one yard short.
Someone’s completely and flatly wrong alright…
eh...I don't really care right now really
If it were something blatant, like Ed Hochuli’s gaffe last year, then maybe we’d be whining louder and with good reason. This was nebulous enough in my opinion to let it go. Now if you want to discuss how Maroney cold have lost the football in the endzone…
Keep the faith!
actually as fumbles go...
that one wasn’t so awful. It was well before he got there and came out on kind of an unexpected angle/hit from Wheeler.
But yeah, there were plenty of missed chances (for both sides, of course). You shouldn’t leave one decisive play to chance like that anyway… another half yard on that route and it’s not even a question.
Speaking of officiating
On the post-game Polian radio interview he mentioned a bad hold on the Welker punt return… I haven’t seen it yet. I think there was a minor one on 37, but not til they were down at the Colt 20 (I think) anyway. Anyone else see it? He didn’t mention it on his monday show so maybe he was just off.
not till they were at the 20 anyway?
so if thats the one he’s talking about, it doesnt really matter, because the 30 isnt better than the 7?
Never doubt Peyton Manning, he’ll make you look silly
Im a douchebag, an asshole, and I'm rarely right.
right
I never said anything about whether it mattered. The implication was that the return only happened due to a hold. The return was well underway at that point and the hold, if it even happened, didn’t help him get to the 7. That’s all I meant.
It was either a hold or a block in the back.
I seem to remember Polian saying something about that.
Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.
Man, I need a life...
Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: I turn 19 on Tuesday, November 17. I accept all gifts. If any of you can figure out a way for me not to have a test Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday on the week of my birthday, that would be the best present ever.
