Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Has Jason Whitlock been Taken Over by His Son

I used to like Whitlock's writing, but good God, look at this from his Weekly NFL Truths column:

Star-divide

5. I'm almost willing to guarantee right now that neither the Colts nor the Saints will play in the Super Bowl. They're on borrowed time.

Ignoring current records, here are the top teams:

1. Vikings: Brett Favre should be the league's MVP, and Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen will deliver Favre to the Super Bowl.
2. Bengals: Swept the Steelers and the Ravens. What more can a team do to prove their Super Bowl worthiness?
3. Patriots: Indy embarrassment is probably exactly what Belichick and the Patriots need to regain their focus.
4. Eagles: Philly will back into the playoffs, advance to the NFC Championship and then it all just depends on whether Andy Reid screws it up with bad strategy.
5. Saints: Mark it down, New Orleans is going to lose three of four during their Patriots-Redskins-Falcons-Cowboys stretch.
6. Steelers: Never count out Big Ben in the playoffs. His ability to stay alive in the pocket keeps Pittsburgh in games.
7. Colts: The wheels come off this week in Baltimore.
8. Ravens: I haven't given up on Ray-ven Lewis. As DeAngelo told us in season 1, da king stay da king.

This is ludicrously insane

I love his "What more can a team do to prove their Super Bowl worthiness?" line. I don't know, Jason. Maybe win all their games, period?

I found this funny:
Vikings: Brett Favre should be the league’s MVP, and Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen will deliver Favre to the Super Bowl.

How could the Favre be the MVP if it will take both Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen to get him to the SB? You can’t be the MVP with players like that on your team, imo.

besides

he says that the Eagles will reach the NFC CG but then, it depends on Andy Reid not to mess it up on the strategy.
My goodness, so, Favre is the MVP, but, has to great players to carry him to the super bowl, BUT, it depends on Andy Reid’s strategy?

excellent point, but he'll never see that as a contradiction

Bizarre.

Patriots move up not because they beat the Colts, but directly because they lost to the Colts. Even Pats fans wouldn’t attempt to use that “logic.”

Keep the faith!

Wow. So we're the seventh best team in the league.

What more can the Bengals do? How about not lose to the Broncos and get crushed by Houston? A Houston team that we beat. Or how about not need overtime to beat Cleveland.

Minnesota also had a close game against San Fran like us. A lot closer actually. We could have won that San Fran game by seven, but we chose clock management instead.

NE lost again to the Broncos and the Jets and the COLTS. Oh this was before Tom was Tom. So as a result we ignore their close wins over Buffalo and Baltimore don’t mean anything?

I don’t even know why I’m responding to this crazy post. I think I’ll stop.

The one that kills me is
Mark it down, New Orleans is going to lose three of four during their Patriots-Redskins-Falcons-Cowboys stretch.

Seriously?!?! SERIOUSLY?!?!?

I really don’t see them losing to the Redskins or the Cowboys, and I think they can take the Falcons. I definitely see the Patriots giving them fits and starts, but to lose to two other of those teams seems highly unlikely.

How can you not love a team that does this?

The Falcons will be a tough game for them

The Falcons gave them a run for their money their last meeting

They just lost their running back and that's the Saints biggest weakness.

I don’t think it’ll be even close this time around against the Falcons.

Garbage. Complete and utter garbage

This is one of those things I’d love to see BBS go batshit nuts on and would agree the whole way. What a fat moron. he has always been one of those love him or hate him guys, often alternating from week to week, but he hasn’t been right about anything in a while.

Speaking of stupid rankings, check this out:

http://www.sportingnews.com/college-football/article/2009-11-19/top-25-football-broadcasters

Aside from the fact that it combines PBP and analysts in the same list, this list is all sorts of wrong.

Gary Danielson is an IDIOT. He knows football but doesn’t explain it very well at all because he’s busy goofing off with his idiot partner, the idiot Verne Lundquist. I’ll be polite and assume that he’d be better if he didn’t have to cover for Verne. Verne drags him down. Somehow they then also put Verne at #8.

I think Collinsworth is the best educator/teacher analyst there is by a large margin.

Al Michaels gets extra credit for his voice. As long as he doesn’t veer at all from telling me what happens, he’s fine. Once he tries to converse about the game with Collinsworth, he’s a moron.

Phil Simms is a complete idiot.

Kirk Herbstreit is a complete idiot and a tool.

Joe Buck shouldn’t be anywhere near the top ten.

Mike Tirico doesn’t teach anything. He’s the play by play guy. Sometimes he sings on air. (Otherwise I do think he’s good now that TK is gone.)

Gruden is not better than any of the three that follow him.

Papa is too low.

Trent Green and Brian Billick should both be on the list, likely in the top 10.

Sorry for the hijack. It’s a bad journalism/announcing party.

You like Collinsworth?

I can’t stand that idiot. He’s absurdly smug for no reason, and I feel that he tends to add nothing in terms of analysis, and his attempts at humor make me do facepalms.

Don’t watch college enough to have an opinion on Danielson, I do know that Herbstreit is an annoying QB/BCS humper. Simms is terrible, he might be my least favorite of the bunch, Theismann when he was around was the absolute worst though IMO.

I'm probably one of the few

but I loved the Paul Maguire – Mike Patrick – Joe Thiesmann trio on ESPN Sunday Night Football. They were hilarious. Not much in the way of telling us insights, but I laughed alot.

you might be the only one, actually.

Theismann found a nice home on NFLN though and does a good job now. I think those three man booths are just recipes for disaster. Too much distracting each other and goofing off. I bet Jaws would be way better in a 2 man booth too – TK corrupted him and turned him into a buffoon on air too and now he’s the instigator most of the time with Gruden. But he’s always well prepared, and without another guy in there to deal with, I bet he’d just talk a lot more football and be better.

by willyduer on Nov 19, 2009 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

It was a ton of goofing off in that booth

but they never tried to be anything else. I like booths that are either goofing off, or very analytical. Booths that try to do both (cough* MNF *cough) I hate.

I've had several arguments about Collinsworth on here...

I totally buy that people hate his smugness, his stupid face and beak, and his bad humor and condescension. Part of being a good announcer is being easy to listen to, which is why some guys can be absolutely awful but still get away with it because of their voice (Musberger, those SEC guys, etc).

But as far as football information, nobody else provides anywhere near the level of detail that he does. He notices the things that really make a play, and he has the explanation immediately after the play. He’s generally well prepared (though he has said some stupid stuff that indicates that sometimes he has off/lazy weeks, I think, such as before the Titans game) and teaches things well. I’m not sure how even his biggest haters could say that he doesn’t add good analysis. I don’t really think there’s any room for debate on this. He’s always 100% on top of coverage schemes, line play and blocking techniques, whether a guy is ineligible downfield, why a hole opened that shouldn’t have (or didn’t when it should’ve in our case), and all the stuff that goes beyond the plays the famous QBs and RBs and WRs make.

I guess if you’re just the average Joe who only cares about fantasy football, the details mean very little, but if you’re interested in always learning more about this amazing and complex game, he’s great.

Trent Green is pretty good too and not smug, though I’ve only heard a tiny bit from him. Billick is decent but not as quick and at ease as Collinsworth – he’s better cut out for Playbook, where he’s excellent. Gruden would be decent if he wasn’t always acting like a jackass homer and afraid to say anything negative. Maybe Collinsworth is too negative at times, but he’s giving legit information even if it’s not spun nicely.

as long as I'm on the subject...

Might as well give credit where it’s due. I’m not always a critical bastard.

This is a good article about the Wildcat, how it’s so different in Miami, and why it’s basically useless everywhere else: Perloff on the Wildcat

GREAT quotes from Sharpe and Theismann (see, told you he was good outside that 3 man booth) that very concisely talk about why it’s different in Miami.

This is the only worthwhile piece of writing I can remember ever bearing Andrew Perloff’s name.

by willyduer on Nov 19, 2009 3:56 PM EST up reply actions

I don't find that he gives too much in details though

I find guys like Tim Ryan, Tony Boselli (A shame that he’s not on Fox anymore) Billick, and even Daryl Jonhston do a very good job with pointing out things, especially line play. When I’ve listened to Collinsworth, I’ve found that he doesn’t usually say a whole lot that I think the average fan could point out. And he seems very QB-centric and WR-centric like many of them.

I haven’t heard enough of Trent Green (or John Lynch, who seemed decent from the little I heard of him) to have much opinion of them. Gruden seems like someone who could be excellent after a few more years’ experience.

We’ll agree to disagree, I don’t think Collinsworth’s analysis is anything more than average, and he’s a douche to go along with it.

I do like the Collinsworth points things out. Even if they are things I did notice it is nice to hear something more than what yard the ball will be spotted on.

by sandsnake on Nov 19, 2009 6:38 PM EST up reply actions

Ryan

I like Tim Ryan but he said something impossibly stupid last weekend (or possibly 2 weekends ago) that made me downgrade him by a lot. I wish I could remember what it was.

My memory tells me that Collinsworth does plenty of pointing out the line play and definitely a lot of things the average fan or even an educated fan (me) doesn’t see the first time through.

Let’s give Papa/Millen our ears tonight – if you pretend it’s not Matt Millen the moron GM, he’s pretty good, and they seem to have adjusted Papa’s mic or something, which makes him sound a lot better this year. I believe he’s known for being very precise in his PBP skills.

One other thing is that I refuse to take anyone who calls reverses or end arounds “double reverses” seriously. This includes Gruden. (And once I heard Nantz call an actual legit reverse and end around. Nobody ever gets this simple thing right!)

by willyduer on Nov 19, 2009 7:19 PM EST up reply actions

Millen used to be Fox's 2nd team before the whole GM thing right?

I haven’t heard him enough to have an opinion on him. He was a good player. Papa from when I’ve watched the Thursday games…just seems kinda average. Not bad or good, but average.

Also, I do get annoyed quite a bit with end around/reverse, it’s really a simple concept.
