Five Things I Think I Know: Week 8 Edition
A win is a win and you take them any way you can get them, but this win one of those ugly ones. Time for some ranting
1.) I think something is wrong with the offense. No im not just talking about today, Im talking about last week as well. Im not sure about the rest of you, but I saw the offense struggle against the rams during the middle of the game as they were stuck at a 15 point lead. Today was no different as the Colts struggled to TD's on the board and kept having to punt. Based on the limited game footage I have concluded that this problem stems from the offensive line with its inconsistent pass and run blocking (specifically Pollak) and a number of dropped passes (emphasis on Garcon). The Colts must find a way to correct this, because kicking field goals or having to punt in numerous occasions is not winning football.
2.) I think the defense, on the other hand, deserves some much needed praise. Despite that long run and that lackluster effort on the last drive of the first half, they have been on fire. They shut out the Niners for the rest of the game after their last TD. Each time the Niners were nearing the endzone, Mathis and Freeney, the most clutch DE's in the league, came up huge with sacks to end drives short of FG range. Coverage was a little shotty at times but Overall though, great performance by the defense.
3.) I think the Gonzo's return is going to greatly help this offense. This one is fairly obvious, but it holds alot of merrit. Garcon, although he has shown some great things, is still a bit raw in some area's, still too accustomed to college rules, thats why he is getting penalized. Collie, while great, is not a huge deep threat and more a first down machine like Stokley was. We all saw what happened when Baskett got into the game, dropping several easy catches. This is likely a result of him getting acclimated to a system that gives most receivers problems adjusting their first years. With Gonzo's return, it will give leway(sp?) to players like Reggie Wayne, who is battling a groin injury and take away the constant dubbles on him
4.) I think we have a candidate for Dr. Jackle and Mr. Hyde. To go place of the once inconsistent Texans, the Cardinals seem to be the newest of inconsistent teams. The Cardinals who looked out of sorts in the beginning of the year, ripped off 3 (2?) straight wins and then fall to the Panthers with an embarrassing performance by Warner. This opens up things for the Niners despite them dropping one today as well.
5.) Reserved for Monday Night

Is #3 reserved for tomorrow, too?

lol, true
I agree, something is not right with our offense. It’s not something the Colts can’t fix during the week, but against the Texans, it will be a very difficult contest so you have to try to solve all those issues asap.
BTW, is there a chance for Gonzo to return to practice this week?

The offense...
the running game is in need of repair…it is not good. When will the Colts try something different for Pollak?
What was Addai’s QB rating yesterday???

I don't think there's anything seriously wrong with our offense.
We’re just spoiled, we’re so used to seeing Peyton play out of his mind, when along comes a game like this, it seems worse. Most teams would love to have an offense like the one that played yesterday. You don’t go undefeated for nothing in the NFL.

My Five
1. I only had audio to the game, but I kept hearing the commentators say that passes were either high or dropped. I have read in multiple places that Manning was sick. I think rest Manning and replace Pollack with DeVan and we are back on track.
2. I may get yelled at for this – but I am an Addai homer – I like him!!!
3. I love our defense!
4. I love how the announcers kept pointing out that our two CBs for the second half were rookies! And the 49ers still couldn’t do a thing!
5. I am ready to get Gonzo back. Anyone got some info on his return?

I'm with you...
I just think Peyton was sick – when I heard he took off 1/2 of practice on Friday (something he never does) I was worried. I’m hoping he just got a touch of the “illness” that seems to have been going around the team the past few weeks. He’ll be fine this weekend, I’m sure.
I am very proud of our defense. Game ball to them.
I liked the call for Addai to throw the pass. Caldwell isn’t as conservative as Dungy, this is something I like alot.
Ready for Gonzo as well.
Ready for Brown to come back, man our running game definitely needs him!

I'm proud of the defense as well. Well said.
This is the first I’ve heard that Peyton was sick, he doesn’t sound sick in the post game press conf., but it would explain his lack of accuracy yesterday.

There's been no confirmation
regarding why he didn’t practice Friday afternoon. Pure conjecture on my part. His sitting out was unusual for him and the thought of an actual injury is scary to me, so I made the assumption that he was ill. There have been a few guys each week (or so it seems) that have missed a day or so of practice under the “non-injury related – illness” label.
Knowing our beloved Colts, we’ll probably never know. lol

I just put up a FanShot
claiming that Peyton’s resting was part of a plan. I’m honestly not buying it, but because it raised so many eyebrows, I think they’re moving forward as if it had been scheduled all along and that they will do it for the rest of the season. Seems fishy to me. Nevertheless, I can see that it would be beneficial for our MVP. Let’s just hope it has the desired results this week. And next week. And the week after. And… oh you get it.

Brown being out could be a factor
The run game is more intimidating with him in, and the offense has missed his presence. But i think Manning just was not used to being pressured so much, games like this make the Colts better. Now they can work on weaknesses. Get back soon Gonzo

Five things from a Texans Fan
1. I hate playing Manning, the guy amazes me every time
2. I hope you still play those two rookie CB;s next week
3. I think that your D is vastly improved (but so is the Texans who looked great the last 5 games)
4. Your running game is suspect (but so is the Texans)
5. Feel free to let Gonzo rest another week, or even give Manning a week off just for good measure

I did read he was sick this week
You wouldn’t want to put your future hall of famer at risk if he isn’t 100%
(I had to start tolling early this week)

I understand Manning and Gonzo willbe shopping next Sunday
for on-sale Halloween costumes for next year. They already told management they’re skipping the game. Hey, 50% off a really cool Darth Vader costume is nothing to sneeze at. What, this didn’t make the media rounds yet today…?
Oh, maybe my source was unreliable…. if so, Gonzo, come back soon, buddy.
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

They are playing VERY well so I hope you didnt mean this like you are gonna throw all over them. They are playing at a very high level for rookies.
