Joseph Addai

Well, it's time to discuss the elephant in the room. Mr. Addai. 3.3 ypc, his long rush is 14 yards, he's not explosive and at times looks confused. He's such a glaring weakness, it's hard not to notice. Time and time again he does not pick up 3ed and short. He rarely gains more than a yard or two on first down and he can not break tackles or make people miss. I truly hope D Brown gets healthy. He is clearly the better RB between the two.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors. It does reflect the views of this particular fan though, which is as important as the views of Stampede Blue's writers or editors.

What about Peyton Williams Manning?

Cooper Manning’s Little Brother?
Elisha Archibald Manning’s Bigger Brother?
or the old favorite, Jim Sorgi?

Bet you a nickel they’re all avalable.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

haha yeah I’m sure that one is available!

Ad hominem attack fail

If you don’t like his argument, address that. Ripping him for his name is just cheap and petty.

Without the 64 yarder in the Rams game Don Brown's YPC is similarly bad

Addai isn’t an elite runner, but he’s effective when he has good blocking and even with the OL issues the last two years he’s still among the best in the league in short yardage. Not even getting into his massive contributions in the passing game was a blocker and receiver.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

If there are O Line Issues, wouldn't Manning be getting sacked more?

You can’t have it both ways. On the one hand, Manning never gets sacked so the O Line is great, but on the other hand the O Line is terrible cuz Addai can’t find holes. If the line is good for Manning it would be good for Addai

pass blocking and run blocking have different skill sets

they are different actions from the very first step

Dude,

He was sacked one more time in this game than in the first 6 they played. You blew your whole point there, ace.

by tim55 on Nov 2, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

no. if you watch the game again you’ll see that mike pollack screwed the pooch on at least 2 of the 3 sacks. He was thrown around like a 10 year old little girl.

With that said, I truly believe that the oline is not the issue.

by shep31 on Nov 2, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude, Brown is averaging 4.4 ypc Addai 3.3 - end of story...

Addai sucks. Period. We all know it. Don’t tell me he can block well… we need a rb who can move the ball forward and Addai is not that guy…

by payten manning on Nov 2, 2009 11:08 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

now, our O-Line doesn't have anything to do with it

Yeah, Some runs have been for losses, or for minimum 1 yard. Same story was with Rhodes, or Simpson or even Brown. True I do prefer Donald since he’s more effective but sometimes this kind of bashing is just unfair.
You say that Manning never gets sacked so the O-Line is great. He was sacked 3 times yesterday. Besides, blocking ain’t the same for running and passing.

YPC is far from the be all, end all

YPC doesn’t reward consistency, doesn’t taken into account converting first downs, doesn’t separate a RB from his line at all, doesn’t penalize for fumbles and excludes all contributions in the passing game.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

by shake n bake on Nov 2, 2009 11:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He can block well...

This is a pass first team. He can catch as well as anyone else on the team. He is a great blocker. And on third and short, he is actually pretty stinkin good this year!!!

We have a two back system for a reason. Brown is the better runner, but Addai’s ability are great!!!

by SupermanWearsBobSander'sPJs on Nov 2, 2009 12:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

In Edge's last few years he was getting bashed too

Right after the injury especially, but when Rhodes steped in, WHAM, our pass pro was a lot more suspect.

If 18 is the most important player on the field every time he steps out there, then protecting him is potentially a higher priority than an extra 2/10 of a YPC (or whatever). We draft RBs who can do it all—run, receive, block, and THINK. Picking up the blitzes isnot just a matter of “okay, I stay ohome on this play.” It involves IDing the blitzer and if he’s a decoy, finding the right guy, or slipping out to receive.

Don’t you think the management wants the best team out there? Particularly after Week 17? Right now, my assumption is they think 29 gives them the best chance to win today while 31 learns the game and the O better. Putting the rook out there 100% is not in anybody’s best interest. Edge was one of a kind. Toward the end of the season they might be closer to 50/50 with 29 and 31.

The real test is next year—do they keep them about 50/50 or skew more toward one or ther other? That will tell us what the people who really know these guys think.

Addai does not suck. We need two seasoned, healthy, fresh, capable backs in the post season. and a better OL.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

addai

all he needs to do is not run outside on every run and when he does run inside HIT THE HOLE and not dance around it!

by incoltswetrust on Nov 2, 2009 10:51 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

He didn't dance around yesterday.

He just had no holes to go through. His 3 YPC was remarkable for having nowhere to go.

by HoosierHorseman on Nov 2, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I beg to differ greatly, watch the game again. He hesitates every time he gets the ball. DBrown makes one cut and hits it hard, its like JA makes his cut, second guesses it, and then goes towards where the hole used to be. He doesn’t hit the hole hard very often, but when he does, he’s darn good.

by shep31 on Nov 2, 2009 2:55 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Addai threw what turned out to be the game-winning TD,

He played almost the whole game which means he did almost all the blocking (well) from the RB position, and if you take away that TD run by Gore he had a better day than Gore rushing.

He probably deserves the game ball (with Freeney and Wayne) so this might not be the week to pile on Joe.

I think what we need to do is trade some future first-round picks (yes, it’s that bad) draft an entire new offensive line next year, and find at least 2 people that can run block.

It’s Mike pollak who isn’t cutting it, he allowed two sacks on Peyton and wasn’t even allowed to play in the 2nd half. He’s the next Tony Ugoh.

by HoosierHorseman on Nov 2, 2009 11:47 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don't think a whole new line is needed

CJ, Lilja an Saturday are very good and you can probably get a competent right guard out of the Diem/Ugoh/Richard/DeVan mix.

An OT in the first next year would be nice though.

Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.

by shake n bake on Nov 2, 2009 11:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I grant you Saturday had great leadership skills,

and they are all good at pass protection, but if he, Lilja, and CJ are “great”, how come the left side is just as bad at opening holes than the right? The problem seems to be mostly the guards, IMO.
I just don’t think they are complete players. Maybe we need more beef.
Polian did draft a big guard this year in Thomas, maybe that’s what he’s going for now. I’ve been looking at next years’s draft and there are some fine players that will probably go in the late 2nd round. We could pick up 2 or even three of them.
We need to have replacements for Saturday (11 years) and Diem (9 years) ready anyway, and the guys we’ve got now, except maybe CJ, DeVan, Richard, and Thomas aren’t getting it done.

by HoosierHorseman on Nov 2, 2009 12:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

As far as the OLine is concerned...

They are great pass blockers. And for a pass first team, that is good!

It would not hurt my feelings to see Polian draft about 3 or 4 OT this year. I would love to see a 1st rounder at LT next year, Lilja at LG, Saturday at C, Diem at RG, and CJ at RT next year!!!

That is just my thinking, but BP is the one who is so brilliant – I would rather him make the decisions.

by SupermanWearsBobSander'sPJs on Nov 2, 2009 12:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm thinking one high quality left tackle

one high quality guard, and one high quality center to succeed Saturday.
We can get at least two and maybe all three next year with the picks we have and the way the draft class is shaking up.

That and one more good young DT and DE(for backup), and a kick returner is all this team needs to be complete.

by HoosierHorseman on Nov 2, 2009 12:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it's not updated for yesterday's game yet

but according to FO’s line stats the Colts are much better behind left tackle and up the middle, than behind right.

by shake n bake on Nov 2, 2009 1:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Can we try a little of both.

The problem is not all Addai nor is it entirely the o-line. It is a combination of both. As well as Johnson has played at times, he is not that good. Pollak is not the answer at guard. We are just going to have to suck it up and hope we can overcome it this year and address it in the draft next year.

by Medicblue on Nov 2, 2009 11:59 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

That's all I'm saying

But I’m not as down on Addai.
He ran for a lot of yards in his first two years, and he can do it again, but he needs some help.
At the very least, he will be a fine 2nd back. He’s a great blocker and reciever, and he’s durable. And he doesn’t fumble. Most of those plays yesterday he didn’t dance around, he was just running right into a pile. He doesn’t call the plays.

by HoosierHorseman on Nov 2, 2009 12:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Would we have won the game yesterday without him?

Bad week to pick on Joe.

Indeed

It’s like making fun of Keanu Reeves after the Matrix came out. While there’s plenty to ridicule (summoning the power of the mighty Ridicules) about his acting inability, that would have been an inopportune moment.

Wow, did I just compare Joe Addai to Keanu Reeves? “Yo, Mister Manning Sir. This offense cannot go under 400 yards per football game… or the Lucas Oil Stadium will explode. We will need to… keep it functioning at a high level. Dude. Whoa.”

Good point

But if Brown were there maybe it would not have been so close. Maybe he could have gotten them the yards they needed to not kick FGs

Its the O line

They arent that good at pass blocking, the stats dont tell the entire story.

They dont tell you how good manning is at getting the ball away quickly, how aware he is of whats going on. They dont tell you about how little the opposing teams blitz, as manning tears them up with his play calling style. The O line arent awful in the pass, but in the Run they really are.

by ColtsUK on Nov 2, 2009 3:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Loved that TD pass

Following some people’s logic, perhaps he is the better QB than Manning? I mean, Manning couldn’t get it into the end zone yesterday. And Addai threw no incompletions…

This guy is a great Colt. Period. My only concern and potential knock on him would be if he proves to be injury prone. So far so good this year. I hope that continues. Addai is a well rounded back.

I am just glad he played so much so that we didn’t have to see more of Chad Simpson. I mean, it’s bad enough when he does kickoff returns. Ugh. Please hurry back, Brown or Hart! We need some depth here.

Your opinion doesn't count ;-)

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Viz Media (The creators of my absolute favorite show of all-time and inspiration to my avatar, Naruto) just announced a partnership with the channel Disney XD to bring the English-dubbed episodes of Naruto Shippuden (The continuation of the Naruto series) to that station with a new episode airing each week, starting, well, NOW. With the series recording I just put on it, this is one of the greatest days I've had in a long time. I'm not kidding. I love the show that much.

haha

awesome

How can you not love a team that does this?

by LovinBlue on Nov 3, 2009 2:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The offensive line isn't very good

That’s the primary problem. Addai doesn’t look authoritative running either, but he’s a good receiver, a great blocker and as we have seen he can toss the ball every now and then.

Sure, we’d all like MJD but realistically we have two backs who can do the job.
