5 Big things COLTS @ Baltimore Edition

We all seem to like these 5 big things posts so I’ll start one for this week.   Here are my 5, add yours below!

1) Joseph Addai is a complete back and the haters need to step back.  He will NEVER be an Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson type feature back, and the Colts don’t want him to be.  He had some nice physical runs today and got tough yards.  That fake on Ray Lewis for his TD was GREAT!  His blitz pickups are wonderful and he seems to be a good mentor for Young Donald.  Gone are the days when every NFL team has/needs a feature back.   Addai is the best in the league for our system!

2)  Larry Coyer is the coordinator of the year.  Hands down.  He trusts our young corners to do their job when he sends extra pressure and is not afraid of what will happen.  The blitz on 3rd down early in the game confused the Nevermore’s O-Line so much that FREENEY was UNBLOCKED on the play.  Let me say that again for impact.  Coyer confused an offense so much that they left DWIGHT FREAKIN FREENEY UNBLOCKED!!!  He gets the defense motivated to do their job and puts them into a place to execute.  The Series at the goal-line was a thing of beauty.  Right now Coyer is getting no respect, like the rest of the Colts, in the national media.  Let’s hope that changes.  He deserves it!

3)  I don’t think Peyton was at fault in either INT in this game.  Yes he did try to force the first one into tight coverage, but how many times have we lauded him for putting the ball in the middle of those spots?  On the Reed INT, I think Reggie could have gone up and knocked at that ball a little bit.  I think Peyton was expecting that.  I don’t fault him for either one.   People (read: mainstream media) will say that because of the last couple games with 2 INTs Manning is being required to do too much to “carry” the Colts.  I’ll take 10-0 any season, no matter what Peyton is being asked to do!

4)  Did Clark and Santi on the field together remind anyone else of the Dilger/Pollard combos from earlier in Colts history?  It was nice to see both TEs get a couple looks today.  I think we can get some good matchups for Dallas in the long run by having 2 receiving TEs in there to keep defenses in their base personnel instead of a nickel or safety coverage like we have seen the couple games.  That’s something we don’t get with Gijon.  I will never say that defenses have “figured out” how to stop or contain something.  It’s all execution.  It would be nice to have another way to dictate the matchup on Clark.  Sidenote:  The TD catch by Clark was phenomenal!  My wife calls herself a football fan “by marriage” and she was excited by it.  AMAZING!

5)  Gary Brackett needs to remain a Colt.  The Colts have a history of not giving contracts to LBs.  I understand this philosophy (you have to call it that because it has gone on for so long!) and agree with it almost all the time.  The Tampa-2 that we play is about speed, coverage and tackling.  It’s not overly complex either.  Players can come in and understand the scheme quickly.  Gary is the prototypical Colts LB.  He is the answer key that we use to grade other possible players.  Look no further than the end of last year when we didn’t have him.  This guy is the heart of our quite good D.  This year he will make over 3 mil (according to Colscap.com) and is worth all that and more to our team.  Bill and Jim need to get together and find room to help him stay.

how many times has peyton reconstructed his contract, does anyone think he would do it again for the sake of a ring

I can't help but disagree

with point #3 about Peyton’s picks…those were both completely his fault. He threw into double and even triple coverage multiple times today, and the bomb to Wayne was just a shitty throw because he never looked off the safety there (he had Collie running a post I believe, and I think he had time to pump there and get Reed to bite and then air it out to Wayne). Not saying I would ever understand the game of football to a billionth of a percentage that P does, but that is the beauty of replay on tv.

On point #4, I did like had the 2TE’s but I think they used this look way too much! Where on earth was Collie today? I was sooo confused with the lack of times he was out there!

Other than that, yeah, Coyer is the man, Brackett is the man and Joe is just awesome, and his pass protecting was unreal throughout the game…

Go Colts, 10-0 is pretty, but come January/February 2010, 3-0 would be a heck of a lot prettier!

I agree with Z Pain above

Plus, I think we keep Brackett.

Hey, I HAVE NOT heard a peep about Coyer’s COTY credentials and you’re right, that’s a massive oversight. From the ridiculed “Swiss cheese run D” to the #1 scoring D, with a new HC and new DC, playing a passel of rookies and backups in the secondary that has top-5 stats in almost all significant passing categories (opponent TDs, QB rating, etc). The more I think about it, the more outraged I am.

Screw Gregg Williams in NO—we hold the opponents to fewer points! Screw Rex Ryan or whoever the DC is for the Jets—we’re undefeatd and are playing a slew of backups!

Man, I am just getting pissed off now…..

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

The Saints are getting more attention

simply because of how inept that franchise has been. Case in point….. they go 8-8 the past 2 seasons after getting torched in the NFC title game by the Bears….They couldnt stop a JV football team from scoring the last few years…. and all of a sudden the Saints are now 10-0 with Gregg Williams at the helm on defense..

That’s why Coyer is getting no love. The Colts have been one of the best teams year in and year out, and consider how good the Colts D was last year statistically.

However, the Colts defense is remarkably even better this year….and for anyone to even remotely say the Saints defense is better…..needs their head examined….we havent allowed a single QB to throw for 400 yards….and the Saints have done it twice…..worse yet…the Saints allowed almost 30pts by the Lions, over 30 by the Dolphins, and 22 by the Rams…. the Rams didnt even score a TD vs. the Colts…

To the credit of the Saints D

The DO score an awful lot (which actually makes their O look less impressive in traditional PF/PA stats, if the D has scored 6 TDs or whatever, that’s 42 fewer pts the O has scored.)

But they are high-risk/high reward apparently. They’ll allow 28 but get 7 back, meaning a net of 21, which is okay. For us, we allow 16 on your twelve drives, and that’s all there is to it. I like our method.

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

Great job emiller

though I have to disagree with you on the third point. I thought only one of those picks was Mannings fault and that was teh first one. That was just a bad decision since Clark had three people around him. At best, it would have been incomplete. There was no way that one was going to be repeated. The second one was also his fault since it was over thrown, but I think reggie could have made a better effort to go and get it

I think your #3 is kind of weak, really

you might consider replacing it with Colts Defense.

But that’s just my opinion.

Addai has been impressive this season.

Brackett is important to the team’s future.

Larry Coyer is doing a great job.

I think that the way Santi played early caused some to somewhat overlook the fact that he hurt the team with some mistakes later in the game. Still, I like his potential. I have some reservations about Gijon, so this could be a great answer.

For a team that’s been so “dominated”, we aren’t looking bad at 10-0. =p
