The Colts won't be known as the team of the decade because of their middling playoff success. Eight times since 2000 they've made the playoffs; five times they've lost their first game."
Peter King, schmuck extraordinaire at SI.com, explaining why the Colts (who have won more games this decade than any other team) are not the team of the decade. King thinks that Patriots are. The same Patriots who were caught cheating during their Super Bowl years. Thanks Pete. Thanks a lot. FYI: There is no "Team of the Decade" for the 2000s. The Patriots are cheaters and the Steelers missed the playoffs for three years.

he's right
how can you be the team of the decade when you have so little playoff success? I would agree its the Patriots, it pains me to say it, but they aren’t far behind the Colts regular season success and have much more playoff success. The only other possible contender could be the Steelers.

There is no "team of the decade"
By any measurement, there isn’t one. If you say the Patriots, you have no soul. Teams who cheat to win are not the best teams of a decade. Plus, Indy has dominated the Patriots for half of this decade. The only team that could really be seen as the “best” this decade is the Steelers, but no one is going to say that because they missed the playoffs in 2000, 2003, and 2006.

quit whining about the Patriots cheating
You still gotta execute on the field
Jeez...

I disagree with all of the above.
I would argue that this is the decade of the Trifecta: The Patriots, Steelers, and Colts.
Those three teams have completely dominated this decade with a random NFC team thrown in a couple of times. There was no one team who dominated this decade, there were three.

I can list reasons why or why not all 3 should be it but if you’ve gotta pick one………

Why?
Why do you have to pick one? What rule says you have to?

cause its the team not teams
if you want to give an accolade for something then you have to pick one. Co-accolades just takes away from the award. So you either pick one team or don’t pick a team of the decade. In my opinion of course.
Indianapolis Colts, taking focus away from my DBacks every Sunday.
Why?
You still haven’t given a good reason. Plus, decades are arbitrary. Why do we have to pick just one team to represent 10 years of football? And there’s no “award” here, so we’re not taking away from anything.
None of this prevents anyone from wanting to crown a single team-of-the-decade, but this decade seems to point to no one clear team.
check what MonkeyBusiness said below
he puts it really well.

The problem with his assessment is that the Pats haven't won a Super Bowl since Spygate...
…and have been far bigger failures in the playoffs than we have in the last 4yrs. Of course, Peter King is part of the MSM who tries to pretend that that didn’t happen. As for the Steelers…Too many meh years in the first half of the decade.
Um…I’m pretty sure this decade isn’t over yet people. Let’s wait until this season is over before we start crowning anyone.
If I had to choose however, it’d probably be the Patriots. Yeah they cheated, but they’ve made it to the Super Bowl 4 times, won 3 titles, and had an undefeated regular season to top it off. You can’t argue with that so just deal with it.
depending on how this season finishes.....
I could move the Colts to #1 on the list. IF it stays at its current pace.
Indianapolis Colts, taking focus away from my DBacks every Sunday.
Eh, I've no problem with the Pats being declared the best team of the decade.
I’ll take my Colts. But really wouldn’t you say we’ve had the third best playoff results in this decade as well? Even with our disastrous one and outs? So if you’re better than 29 other teams, are you really such a playoff failure? Yeah, we should’ve won more, but we aren’t the Braves or the Bills. We WON the Superbowl. (Not by three points either. It was a pretty solid team win.)
I gotta agree
Let’s just hope the Colts are the team of this season. Two Super Bowls in the Manning Era will sure help with this debate! Kravitz quoted this stat: Colts are 80-20 in their last 100 (regular season) games, but the Pats are 82-18.

Since technically 2009 is the last year of this decade, the discussion is open and appropriate.
You only have three choices: Colts, Pats, Steelers.
Indianapolis Colts:
Pros: A lot of memorable games (Tampa Bay 2001, 2004 Season, 2006 Playoff Run, 2009 every other game), Super Bowl win, winningest franchise of the 00s.
Cons: Some ugly playoff losses to the two other Team Of The Decade contenders, only one Super Bowl win
New England Patriots:
Pros: Three Super Bowl wins, record breaking 2007 season, lots of memorable games
Cons: Spygate, 2002 and 2008 seasons, 18-1, Super Bowl wins were early in the decade, Super Bowl XLIII and “We’re only going to score 17 points? Haha, is Plax playing defense? I mean, give us a little credit.”
Pittsburgh Steelers:
Pros: Two improbable Super Bowl wins,
Cons: Highly inconsistent, no real credentials outside of Super Bowl wins
Basically, the Steelers are in the discussion because they won a pair of Super Bowls. If the Colts win this year’s Super Bowl, then the Steelers are out.
The Patriots have more positives, but more negatives as well. Spygate looms large over the Pats three titles, but regardless of whether you were cheating or not, your players still have to execute.
The Colts big negative is the lack of playoff success. Regardless of what the metrics and analysis say, if you’re tops in the conference year after year, one and done isn’t going to cut it.
I’d say the Patriots are the Team of the Decade right now, pending the results of this season. If the Colts go 19-0, then they’re it, hands down. If they lose one or two and win Super Bowl XLIV, they get a share of the title.

Colts are the team of the decade
because they won the game of the decade, the 2006 AFC Championship. Never has there been a better game played this century, and the Colts won it.
The Colts are MY team of the decade,
that’s all that matters to me. MonkeyBusiness has great points, but I’m following my heart.

I'm with you.
I’m over actually caring what anyone else thinks about the Colts.
That said, there is ONE person I’m annoyed with today: Tony Dungy. How, HOW?, can he say that Bretty Favre is the MVP? Cause “he’s brought the Vikes further?” Really, Tony? Perhaps he should study the Colts a little more: Bob Sanders – OUT, Kelvin Hayden – OUT, Marlin Jackson – OUT, Anthony Gonzalez – OUT, Marvin Harrison – GONE. 2 ROOKIE CBs, 1 Rookie WR and another that could be considered a rookie. This is NOT the same team that has repeatedly been in the playoffs. Peyton HAS done more with less. Brett Favre isn’t even the best player on his team.

He also said Vikings weren't an 11 or 10 win team last year like the Colts.
For one, What does last year have to do with this year. Favre isnt the only addition that made them better.
Second, The Vikings did win 10 games last year and won their division. So Dungy was a little off.

TOTALLY agree.
So much more is asked of Peyton. Anyone who knows football will tell you that. Tony Dungy is wrong. Peyton runs that offense, I get the feeling Brett has a lot more help decision making. Tony should know better. end of my rant.

I agree with BBS that there's no "team of the decade"
But that implies that the Colts aren’t the team of the decade. Peter King’s right by citing our lack of success in the playoffs as a factor. Had we won another or maybe a couple of more Super Bowls, we would clearly, unarguably be the team of the decade. We still have a chance to win one this year, and maybe THEN there would be a “team of the decade”. Personally, I like Peter King and I read his MMQB every Monday, but it’s kinda obvious he likes the Patriots more than some other teams. On the other hand, he still lists Peyton Manning over Brett Favre (and of course, over Tom Brady), something not even Tony Dungy thinks. I agree with King, and I think you all do, too. He’s certainly a missing piece for that team, but he’s not the MVP.
GO COLTS!
I think the real question is “How much does QB play affect the other skill positions?”
No matter which way you look at it, Brett Farve is an enormous improvement over either Sage Rosenfels or Tarvaris Jackson. Consequently, he makes Sidney Rice, Adrian Peterson, Visanthe Shiancoe, etc. better because defenses have to key in on him more than they might have otherwise.
Favre joined a team that was one QB-sized piece away from being a legitimate contender. Consequently, they’ve done exactly what they expected to: win.
Peyton is on a team that has endured significant turnover: a Hall of Fame WR and a Hall of Fame coach gone, significant defensive injuries mostly in the secondary, #2 WR out for most of the season, etc.
What are the Vikings without Brett Favre? A playoff team. They showed as much last season. What are the Colts without Peyton Manning? I’d bet 6-5, because I don’t think anyone other than Manning wins those last five games. Not Brees. Not Brady. Not anyone. Only Manning.
That’s why Manning deserves the MVP.

It's also mental
The Vikings have also convinced themselves that Favre was the missing piece they needed to step up and be great. With him they feel invincible and they play better because of it.
Manning is a victim of his own success. He’s been so good for so long that any season where the Colts don’t win 12 games AND go to the Super Bowl is considered a disappointment.
Fortunately the Colts have been trained to not let personal awards distract them. It Favre wins the MVP and the Colts win the Super Bowl, Peyton will be perfectly happy and so will I.
"The best defensive player is the sideline." - Trevor Pryce, on how to stop Peyton Manning
It just cracks me up
that the media is all “OMG, Favre hasn’t thrown and interception in the month of November, OMG OMG OMG!” I mean really? He’s got the record for the most interceptions and now that he’s controlling himself and making better decisions, he’s the most awesome ever? His decision making should have improved a long time ago.
I really want Peyton to win at least one more SB, and I would definitely rather see him hoist the Lombardi again than another AP MVP.

It's an easy calculation.
Super Bowl win: 6 points.
Undefeated regular season: 2 points.
- seed: 1 point.
Division Title: 1 point.
Playoff appearance: 1 point.
Peyton Manning: 100 points.
This makes sense to me.
I’d say this whole argument has been settled. Thank you very much!

Maybe
They should make Best Regular Season Team of the Decade so you can win that. I do find it neck in neck between you and the Patriots but unfortunately Spygate doesn’t wipe of any of there Superbowl wins so I have to pick them. If you guys win the Superbowl this year then I definitly would have to give you the nod.
You never hear of the Buffalo Bill’s being called the 90’s decade team and they made four straight Superbowls but they lost all of them.
Taylor Mays > Eric Berry
yea we didn't go to the superbowl
any times and not win we went once and wone so that last sentence really makes no sense in this conversation to me

Well
I’m just showing that a team that was really good and had been to the Superbowl 4 straight had big let downs in each bowl so no one really remembers them. That relates to how the Colts have been to the playoffs every season since 2002 and yet have only one superbowl appearence and win.
