Patriots Quit, Colts Don't

Okay.  I'm accustomed to the Patriots doing unconventional things after all of these years (video cameras, "star" QBs lying on the ground and slapping the turf until a ref throws a flag, 4th and 2, etc.), but they f**King GAVE UP WITH 5 AND A HALF MINUTES LEFT!!!  They pulled Brady and the starters.  The Colts would never concede; they would never believe they were out.

The Pats are supposed to be an explosive, prolific offense.  You don't give up.  What an awful team and what a disgraceful turn in this franchise's history.  Take away the video cameras and.......

It was the smart decision. They were getting their butts whooped. What a game by the Saints.

by willyduer on Dec 1, 2009 12:06 AM EST reply actions

I disagree, The smart decision would be to at least run your first team offense out there and give it a shot, putting your tail between your legs and whimpering off into the tunell after the game is not how this game is supposed to be played. Mad props to the saints for demolishing whatever the pats called a defense tonight, but you still never give up, i specifically remember the colts down 21 against the bucs any takers on how that game ended up????

I was just about to post this

but I was sure somebody already had. How could someone NOT post this? That was the most embarrassing display of a New England Patriots organization I have ever seen. I hate the Pats with everything I have and think Belichick is a classless prick, but I’ve always at least respected their ability to play intense football. That all changed tonight.

Of course the Saints absolutely dominated them the whole game, and the looks on the pats’ faces just showed it. Yet, at the end of the game, down by 3 TDs with 5:38 left to go, you throw in the towel. Just plain cowardice by Belichick. If this was some middle tier team like Miami or Chicago with no playoff chance getting this beatdown, I MIGHT understand that move. Yet this is a team that prides itself on winning and prides itself on it’s offensive game of Brady, Moss, Welker, and co. 3 TDs is a big deficit, but can be overcome if you want to win enough. The Patriots clearly did not. Just a disgraceful way to end the game. Steve Young had it dead on. It’s like playing your little brother in checkers and you’re beating him real bad. Rather than keep playing and try to come back and win, he smashes the board and runs away.

The little respect I had for Belichick as a coach was just lost forever, I think. He thinks it’s cool to run up the score on teams with losing records, but once he gets his ass kicked, he just rolls up into a little ball. Being the Christmas season, I’ll say that he is like Scut Fargas, the bully from A Christmas Story. He thought it was so fun to pick on weaker kids and never let up, but when one of them beat the crap out of him, he cried like a little wuss. How anyone can like this team I’ll never know.

I concur

Absolutely, everybody in America knew the Pats had no chance. But you play to win, not get your scrubs 5:38 of game experience. You tell your team you have confidence in their abilities, and among those talents are resiliance, adaptability, determination….. Apparently, for the Pats, another is the ability to curl fetal and cover your balls when the going gets tough. Pathetic.

If Bruschi and Harrison and all the others were outraged by the 4th and 2 decision a few weeks ago (i.e. “I have no faith in my D”), how did they feel about this admission of loserdom? Wasn’t this an admission that neither the D nor the O can get the job done? “Five minutes is too long for you guys, so I’ll let you get some much needed rest and put out the JV squad.”

Have you ever seen an athlete in one-on-one competition give up when the score got too bad? A boxer, wrestler, tennis player. (Yes, I know two of those sports always have the threat of a sudden all-encompassing win. Believe me, I’ve been there. But when one guy is up in such a commanding way, it’s pretty clear the other will never get the KO or pin. And STILL you don’t see guys walking off the mats before the final whistle.)

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

Aside from all THAT

I will say that the Saints looked unbelievably tough. They are for real and deserve all the credit in the world for that excellent display of football. Except for Sedrick Ellis on one play, who for whatever insane reason going through his head, decided NOT to fall down after a fumble recovery, and coughed it up. Oh well, we’ll all laugh about that one tomorrow.

nah... Pats got beat with a stick

Drew Brees picked on CB Jonathan Wilhite all night long – there was no stopping it. Man! That beat-fest didn’t hurt as much as the Colts loss did.

Ever remember a game where you just felt the team didn’t have it and wasn’t going to get it? Not this year of course, but you know what I mean. That’s why it didn’t bother me about Brady sitting out that five minutes. Pats were done. Brees picked apart the secondary like it wasn’t even there. I’m trying to remember a loss where it was that emphatic a beat-down where nothing was working. It was the bad news bears out there.

Didn’t mean to rant, but that was something last night.

Keep the faith!

don't worry Marima

I felt far, far worse after that 44-17 waxing by the Jags in 2006. We won the Super Bowl that year.

I remember the 2003 MNF game, Colts at Tampa Bay

I felt like the Colts didn’t have it, and I felt like they were never going to get it. With 5:09 left in the game and the Colts trailing by 21 points, I’ll admit that I turned off the game and went to bed. I didn’t want to see the Colts get beat any longer and I was ready to waive the white flag. Belichick did the same thing last night with 5:38 left. I’m just glad that on that night back in 2003 Tony Dungy and Peyton Manning refused the same option.

I agree that they should of gave 100% effort till the final whistle. I also believe that even if the Pats (with their current roster) was at a 100% they couldn’t have beaten the Saints, the Saints were on their game and just has so much more talent than the Pats.

My mom made me go to bed

with some 6 minutes left in that game. Never forgiven her for that.

Colts-Jaguars and Colts-Texans. Both games I would like to wipe from my memory forever.

Two things from a more sober perspective

My first post was a bit under the influence…of chocolate stouts, a pumpkin beer, and some bad swill. A day later and it looks just as bad. Two other things:

1. New Orleans played a phenomenal game. Virtually every skill player on their offense is a threat. That’s amazing offensive football. McKenzie was a beast.

2. The Pats simply gave up. It had nothing to do with “protecting” their personnel. The Pats are happy to leave all of their starters in during 59-0 blowouts and other games that allow Brady to pad his stats. It makes sense to keep your guys in to fight and claw their way back into a game; it does not make sense to risk injury during a game that is clearly beyond your opponents’ reach (and to keep them in there to make the QB look unbeatable and to make th coach look like a genius).

by tenyardfight on Dec 1, 2009 8:11 AM EST reply actions

Got to agree

When I watched the humiliation of the Titans I kept thinking, “This is going to end badly.” I was really concerned that somebody would get desperate or frustrated or both, and that in the driving snow there would be some monumentally stupid play that got a player hurt for the rest of the year. Thankfully I was wrong.

I don’t know, maybe I wasn’t giving the professionals on the field enough credit. I just thought that it was hugely irresponsible of Belichick to keep all his starters on the field in those horrid conditions when they already had such a huge lead.

I also remember 04-05 playoffs when Belichick directed the Gillette Stadium staff to leave the cover off the field all week before the Colts arrived, because it would ice up the field and make it more difficult for the Colts. I remember being intensely mad at Belichick’s willingness to gamble with player safety for a game advantage. I wanted him to break an ankle and see how he felt about ice after that.

So yeah, I agree, Belichick couldn’t give a rat fart about risk of injury. He wanted to end it quickly or punish his starters or both. You stay classy, Bill.

Bill Belichick has always been a terrible loser

A coach leaving the stadium before the game is finished, running up the score on winless teams, and now this.

I can’t help feeling that this is the beginning of a new era in New England – the cocky confidence of the last decade sure seems to be shattered.

Except last night

The weird thing I saw was how long Bill stayed on the field after the game, talking to Saints coaches and players. Maybe he always drinks too much Gatorade during Colts games, and needs to find a bathroom. That would explain the quick/lack of handshakes when the Colts win.

By the way

Tom Brady and Belichick are making me so much more proud of the way the Colts have handled themselves during the years. You keep on fighting, even when it looks impossible, that’s a winner’s attitude.

Not only that....

but the Colts, more than not, get it done. I’ve learned to never give up on them. On a side note, I got a laugh on what Kordell Stewart just said on ESPN. He said that the Saints win was important being they’re trying to pattern themselves in the mold of a New England, who’s been winning consistenly and the ‘right’ way for years. Excuse me…..the ‘right’ way???? Are you friggin’ serious? I guess Kordell’s view of the right way and my view are completely different. The Colts would be the organization to pattern oneself after, not the Pats.

1996 AFC Championship Game

What else do you expect from the guy who caught a key touchdown to beat the Colts after running 3 yards out of bounds directly in front of an official. Kordell just loves winning the “right way.”

The 4th and 3 call in the third quarter

Was the time when I knew this game was over. It’s obvious Bill has no confidence in his defense. Where were the halftime adjustments? Rodney Harrison and Bruschi said how they would be offended and angry by plays like that because it shows no faith in the defense. The coach admitted that they couldn’t stop the Saints offense and the players started to believe it. Disgusting.

When Brady came out, I was thinking was because he was hurt. He was getting drilled all game. But no. They just quit. Incredible win by the Saints, but I feel like we saw the end of an era for the Patriots more than we saw the beginning of a new era for the Saints.

kind of explains the 4th and 2 against the Colts

The defense, as it is now, is not confidence-worthy.

This season

has led me to believe that we have seen the beginning of the Chiefs/Bengals/Colts/Rams era of football in New England.

What do I mean by that?

Great offense, subpar defense.

To be fair of course, the Patriots have lost guys to injury this year. However, this defense issue has been going on really since 2006. Even in 2007 when they went 18-1, that team could be scored upon at will by a good offense.

Anyone remember the early 2000’s when the Chiefs, Colts, and Rams were all high octane offenses? The Bengals could put up points but couldn’t keep out a pregnant woman on high heels on defense? Yeah, that’s what I’m seeing in New England…

If the Patriots aren’t careful, they could end up out of the playoffs for a second straight year. They have a 2 game lead in the AFC East, but the Jets, Dolphins, and even the Bills (who are playing better as of late) could all make it go down to the wire for the Pats.

by DevilsReject on Dec 1, 2009 9:28 AM EST reply actions

Colts could have posted a blowout too

But they forgot that you should probably put a cornerback on Moss. Saints didn’t, and blew em out.

by slash196 on Dec 1, 2009 10:25 AM EST reply actions

I totally agree. When they pulled Brady with 5 1/2 minutes left, I was shocked and thought of all the mega-comebacks orchestrated by 18 over the years, specifically the Tampa Bay game, where we had even less time left and down by 21.
