THE STATE OF THE TEXANS: WEEK 9 EDITION

I didn't believe he lead the NFL either

1. Matt Schuab

Guess what StampedeBlue fans! Matt Schuab actually leads the NFL in passing yds. (He actually has 115 more yds than Manning) I'm not going to get into a debate into who's better. (Manning is) However, Schaub should get some praise. He's having the best year in his NFL career. To date, he leads the league with 2,342 passing yds, 16tds, and 7 int's. Schuab is leading his team to a potential playoff run! (This would be a first for the Texans!) Jokes aside, Schuab is pretty good. He's been surrounded by play makers such as Andre Johnson, Owen Daniels, Steve Slaton, and others. However, Owen Daniels is out for the season and Andre Johnson sustained a serious injury two weeks ago against the Bills. We will see how good Schuab really is in utilizing his back ups. Still, Schaub is going to put the Colt D to work this Sunday. He better be ready for a ferocious pass rush.

                                                             Classic Case of Fumblitis

2. Steve Slaton

Steve Slaton wishes he could go back to his rookie year. So far this season he's accumulated 342 rushing yds and 2 tds. However, Staton has been diagnosed with fumblitis. In his last 8 games he's coughed up the ball 7 times! This spells trouble for the Texans, since the Colts are great in causing turnovers.  Slaton was benched last week and had to watch Ryan Moats run wild on the Bills. Moats is a 5 year journeyman and looks likes he found a home in the Texans organization. Last week he racked up 126 rushing yds, 25 receiving yds, and 3 tds. The most impressive stat was that he never fumbled the football. (Then again, it was the Bills) Moats has started a RB controversy with the Texans. Whoever starts this Sunday better be ready for the hard hitting Colts. (Here's to hoping Slaton starts)

Don't adjust your screen...he really is that big

3. Andre Johnson and Co.

Andre Johnson is a natural born beast. I hate to say it, but he's the best well rounded receiver in the NFL. At 6' 3" this guy's has the speed, height, and the power of a running back. His league leading 697 receiving yds and 4 td's is making Schuab's life a lot easier. However, Johnson's performance last week wasn't great. He was held to 63 yds that was most likely caused by an injury he sustained in week 7 against the Bills. Still, two weeks is good enough for any superstar to get back on track. I wouldn't expect anything less than a 100 yd game from this guy.

As for their WR's the Texans are looking O.K. across the board. Kevin Walter is their number 2 guy with 261 receiving yds and 1 td. Walter isn't great, but he shouldn't be taken lightly. (He only averages about 44 yds a game) Jacoby Jones on the other hand is the complete opposite. This guy is explosive and can take it all the way on any play. The only problem is he's a better returner than receiver. Watch out for this guy on Sunday. The Colts better practice their ST's coverage.

It isn't looking to good for their TE's. Their pro-bowl TE Owen Daniels was lost last week to a season ending injury. Their back up Anthony Hill is said to have caught the swine flu. (Better use that hand sanitizer) To top it off their 3rd string TE James Casey is also out to undergo meniscus knee surgery. So (drum roll please) we will most likely see Joel Dreessen as an every down TE. (Don't expect anything from him)

                        defense800.jpg D LINE picture by MAXAIR101

A New and improved Texan D

4. The O-Line and Defense

It's a safe bet to say that the Texan O-Line does a decent job. They've been protecting Schaub so far and have only allowed 13 sacks. They do have their ups and downs when it comes to rushing though. They sort of reflect the Colt running game in a few aspects. Overall, it will be interesting to see if the Colt D-Line can rattle the Texan O-Line.

With all those early first round picks, out the past following seasons. It would be a crime if they didn't end up with a good defense. Mario Williams and Amobi Okoye have lead the D-line in stopping the run as well as stopping the pass. (Watch out for whoever Mario Williams matches up against) I expect a sack from Mario at the most. As for their LB's, they've discovered a gem in rookie Brian Cushing to compliment DeMeco Ryans. These two have a nose for the football and are sure tacklers. (Expect some extra hard hits) Now as for their Secondary. (Manning might have a field day). The Texans CB's worth mentioning are Glover Quin and Dunta Robinson. Both are decent in stopping screens passes and runs. However, these guys are terrible in pass coverage. As for their safeties... only Eugene Wilson is well rounded in all areas. Overall, the Texan D is a young group. (Expect Manning to exploit their inexperience)

Isn't that stat for Schob

Both correct

But seriously, I don’t think you’re going to find any Texans fans running around claiming that these current league-leading stats make Schaub the better-than-a-Manning bestest QB ever.

But it it makes him a top-5 QB on an every-Sunday (and 1 Monday) basis, then color me ecstatic.

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

I could care less whether Manning or Schaub is better, I’m just ecstatic at how awesome our O has been. We have lots of depth at WR and TE so I think the loss of OD won’t be all that devestating.

re: Schaub's mug

Really….from a fan of Captain Forehead? (and even though I find it sad that we have been put at a point where I have to insert a disclaimer, I hope you know that is sarcasm & not an attack on you)

Let’s face it, neither of our QBs is going to be winning any GQ head-shot contests anytime soon. Or ever.

You're wrong about our five-head.

Take it from a hot-blooded american women, Peyton is GQ.

I think Peyton is great looking too!

Not in a gay kind of way! (smile) I guess it’s my way of saying, I would not want to look at anyone else under center playing for the Colts!

by Ayrshire on Nov 5, 2009 12:26 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Not that there's anything wrong with being gay, lol. (Seinfeld)

I NEVER get tired of looking at Peyton under center. He has “it”.

He has 'it', huh? That what the female Bucs fans

say about Peyton here in Tampa. And, don’t even get me going on the Seinfeld references. I had a little fun with that yesterday with the Texans.

It wasn't so bad

I think they’re a little sensitive to the tone of BBS’s comments. They don’t realize that BBS calls it like he sees it. Period. There’s no sugarcoating. Who do you know honestly, who would call Singletary a bum? It’s one of the reasons I even read his blog. I think he’s hysterical. And, he spews it out there, but, in all fairness, without an emphasis on tact sometimes. They just didn’t like being made to feel like 1st grade kids in a classroom with a mean, old teacher…..although a few of them may have acted like 6 year olds apparently, from what BBS said. What’s ironic is…..the post got over 1000 hits mainly because of Brad.

Actually we don't care about the comments he made

It was more of an issue of him banning and deleting threds he where others said it like they saw it. No problem with him bring his oppinions, is more of an issue of suppressing others opinions.

Which is what led to their being such a brouhaha when he came BRB and started preemptively chiding people for being children and threatening to lock threads, all before anyone had had a chance to have a civil discourse. That isn’t calling it like you see it, its just being rude.

re: #3 -- TEs

I believe you have a few misconceptions in this section of your post. I’d like to clear them up for the sake of discussion regarding this week’s game.

First, you stated that Anthony Hill is the backup. This is absolutely not true. Hill is a rookie who has not moved off the bottom of the TE pile all year. And due to his inconsistencies (and catching Swine Flu a few weeks ago), he has actually been on the inactive list for the past couple games.

Joel Dreessen has actually been the #2 TE (with Daniels as #1) for quite a while now. The Texans were running a lot of 2-TE sets, typically with OD becoming a receiver on the play.

Also, 1 more minor correction. James Casey is not out “to undergo meniscus knee surgery”. He has already undergone the arthroscopic procedure, and will play again after the Bye week.
And Dreessen has been one of the coaches’ favorite targets in the red zone, based on the plays that have been called. He’s basically just a slightly slower version of OD, so it will be interesting to see what he does with playing time at #1 TE this year.

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

by Shake on Nov 5, 2009 9:03 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Wow.

That formatting got pretty messed up. It took my last 2 sentences (re: Casey) and inserted them in the middle of the section about Dreessen. Weird.

Apologies for the now hard-to-follow post.

So (drum roll please) we will most likely see Joel Dreessen as an every down TE. (Don’t expect anything from him)

I think Dreessen will earn some respect this week, he is better than most people give him credit for.

Ya if you "don't expect anything from Dreesen", it is only because you probably haven't watched him much.

Dreesen starts on 20 teams in this league and competes for the starting job on another 5.

The only reason he doesn’t have the stats is that he is behind the best Tight End in the AFC right now, Owen Daniels.

Dreesen is taller, and stronger than Daniels and is almost as athletic.

I am actually excited that he is finally getting a chance to be the number 1 guy.

He also has GREAT hands.

So I would say that you may be surprised by just how well Dreesen plays on Sunday.

As for Kevin Walter, his numbers are misleading. We have so many weapons on offense that the ball gets spread around. Last year Walter ended up with around 900ish yards. This year Owen Daniels has been getting more of the receptions so Walter has seen his contribution reduced.

That said, he is a solid #2, big time 3rd down guy and capable of giving opposing defenses fits if they don’t respect him.

Ya we all know he is injured. Didn't think I had to mention that fact since it is all over the news, media etc right now...

Apparently, I didn’t plan for the lowest common denominator though. My bad.

Couple of things

Looking forward to seeing how Schaub copes without Daniels, and looking forward to seeing how Slaton deals with being benched.

Think Walter could have a nice little game on timing routes.

We all are. Our O line strength is our tackles. Winston as you may know is pretty damn good, and Brown has made large strides forward since last year(when he got destroyed by Freeney).

As a Texans fan...

… This is almost all completely right, haha.
Shaub’s number’s are actually not as good as Manning. (Manning is first in yds/gm, Shaub is 3rd). If projected right, then Manning would have 50-100 more passing yards. Manning is the undisputed king.
The only part of this, is I think the article definiatly underestemates a young, but talented, Texans D. Expect a very, very good game.

by Supertrumpet64 on Nov 5, 2009 2:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Texans Defense is a whole new entity in the last 5 games.

We have the BEST rushing defense over the last five games in the NFL. Passing D is average.

uhoh

I hope we don’t get held to 58 rushing yards.

There’d be no way we could win then.

Really?

We’ve won plenty of games with 50 rushing yards before. I don’t want to have to try, but Peyton can do it.

Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.

Man, I need a life...

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Viz Media (The creators of my absolute favorite show of all-time and inspiration to my avatar, Naruto) just announced a partnership with the channel Disney XD to bring the English-dubbed episodes of Naruto Shippuden (The continuation of the Naruto series) to that station with a new episode airing each week, starting, well, NOW. With the series recording I just put on it, this is one of the greatest days I've had in a long time. I'm not kidding. I love the show that much.
