Perception altering Reality: Why the Colts are better than the Saints
The new Colts/Saints debate is the latest case study in perception skewing reality. The following is why the Indianapolis Colts are a better football team than the New Orleans Saints. While both teams have tremendous offenses, smart coaches and quarterbacks, professional attitudes and staunch determination. The Colts are a more complete team with more maturity and experience, since for at least the third time in four seasons, they've started 7-0. For that exact reason, however, sports media is over hyping the Saints, evident in power rankings across the nation.
It seems like year after year, the Colts get off to a fast start, become the last unbeaten team in the league, and spend the last week or two of the season resting their starters. Just three seasons ago they became the first team in NFL history to win 13 straight by an average of at least a touchdown. As fans and anchors and analysts we've become so accustomed to the Colts' monstrous regular season success, that it's become nearly impossible for them to impress anyone. While the Saints have certainly played well, I won't deny that, they've done nothing to prove they are better than the Colts while showing at least a few reasons, in my opinion for why they are worse, more on that later.
But between you and me, I hope the Colts get the lowest power rankings possible with the least media hype. Staying under the radar is always a good thing especially for the Colts, just look at their super bowl run. So really I don't mind them not being ranked first, though my BCS experience has conditioned me to believe that rankings are important, so long as the rankings are made with respect and logical reasoning, rather than hype, feel good stories, and flawed perception. All from which the Saints are benefitting, to their dismay I'm sure. What annoys me the most however, are the excuses made for the Saints but not for the Colts, most notably after last weekend. In week three against the Bills, Drew Brees goes 16/ 29, 172 yards, no TDs, no INTs, and a 73 passer rating. All the media talked about was how gritty this Saints team was, being able to beat a horrendous Bills team, currently ranked last in rushing yards allowed, with decent, mistake free play from their quarterback. If that were Kyle Orton's stat line, he would be praised for being such a valuable game manager while Brees is said to have an off day. The next week, same result, except against an unbeaten Jets team, which has since been exposed, I'd say, losing twice to the Dolphins. But when Peyton Manning puts up 347 with no touchdowns or interceptions against an unfamiliar and tenacious Niners team (arguably the greatest 3-4 team of all time), people start asking, "What's wrong with Peyton." Two days later, the Colts drop in the Power Rankings and Peyton drops in the MVP watch behind the Saints and Brees, respectively. While headlines say that the Colts struggle against the Niners, they say the Saints show their fortitude against the Bills, Jets, Dolphins, and Falcons.
While I have come to accept the fallacy that "newer is better", one that I think Obama benefited from, not that he doesn't deserve it, it's another thing entirely to seek to create an icon in the Saints, which I believe ESPN, among other sports publications, is doing. I believe they see the media cash cow which is the story of the immaculate Saints rising from the ashes of once defeated New Orleans to save a city, a people, and an economy in desperate need of hope and a hero. I say this with only the best for the people of the Big Easy, but anything besides reasoned, logical, unbiased coverage of the Saints is just bad journalism and a mockery of "expert" analysis, not to mention irresponsible. While their current run is great for the city, what happens when the media over hypes this team, gets NOLA's hopes up, and they lose in the divisional round after a first round bye and three weeks of meaningless games. I'm not suggesting Katrina 2.0, but the city will be devastated, and the team will have a tough time bouncing back in 2010. Now, back to why the Colts are better. As I stated near the beginning, the Colts are a more complete team. I’m going to say that the offenses are even. The Colts have just as many weapons as the Saints, especially when Gonzalez returns, are just as hard to cover, and are just as dynamic. Some would argue that the Saints have a better running game, and I would probably agree. The Colts have better and more complete backs, however, in Brown and Addai who, in addition to running, both block and receive extremely well. For the Colts though, putting up big rushing numbers are not as important as establishing the run as a legitimate threat for both setting up the play-action and converting in short yardage situations. Note, Joseph Addai has the highest conversion percentage of any back in the NFL since 2006 in converting 3rd and 4th and short and goal line situations. At over 80%, that’s higher that AP, LT, and Brandon Jacobs to name a few. The Saints backs are unreliable, fumbling twice in huge situations Monday night.
Also, I would say special teams are just close enough to be even, a slight advantage going to the Saints, although Colts coverage teams are playing incredibly well this year. For me it’s the defense that makes all the difference. In scoring defense, the Colts are 1st in the league; the Saints are 17th. While highlight reels show Frank Gore’s 64 yard TD run, analysts claim a poor run defense for the Colts, ignoring the fact that they held him to 24 yards on 17 carries outside of that run. When the Saints give up 442 yards and 27 points to the Falcons, their defense is "much improved." It doesn’t matter who the Saints have played and who the Colts have played. Outside the Bills and the Jets, the Saints have had to score in droves since the defense had given up over 20 points in each contest. The only team to go over seventeen points against the Colts were the Dolphins (23 points), a team which would have beaten the Saints if Ted Ginn could catch, scoring 37 against the Saints. Offenses for all teams are less reliable in the playoffs, given elite competition. And when they get there, the Saints will have to be able to shutdown teams much better than the Jets and Bills. Right now, I doubt their ability to do this. While several analysts are comparing this Saints offense to that of the 2007 Patriots, I think they are closer to the 2004 Colts who were able to jump out to early leads and allow there defense to feed on pass desperate opponents.
The Saints defense is opportunistic at best and porous at worst. They allow big plays and have not shown an ability to keep their team in the game by forcing three and outs, but they’ve benefiting greatly from turnovers and, of course, Sharper’s pick-sixes. Come January, if the Saints face a team that could match them point for point, perhaps the Vikings, they better hope their defense can lean on the luck they’ve had so far. I will argue all day with anyone who says the Saints are outside the top 5 teams in the NFL right now, but they are certainly not the best. Their number one ranking is merely a result of hype, popularity, and excitement, not facts. Yes I am a huge Colts fan, and you can say that my opinion is just as biased as those who clamor over the Saints. But I've been paying close attention to sports media, and I think Peter King is the only "neutral" journalist to give the credit, I believe, the Colt's deserve (even though he ranks them second). As our friends at 18 to 88 say, "It isn't homerism if you're right." And in this case I believe I am. Your thoughts?

You're right
about the Saints being overhyped, and about them giving many yards this year, but let’s face two things: 1) They have played better teams, so we cannot argue that we would do a lot better either, yet. If we do well against the Pats and Texans, then let’s bring that up. 2) Stats are overrated…Yes, they gave up a lot of yardage and big plays, but they WIN the game; they get the Ws…They’ve got attitude and they know how to deal with pressure. In conclusion, they are in fact a really good team, and I still think we’re better than them, but I think we have better chances against the other 30 teams.
GO COLTS!

I kinda stopped reading
At “the greatest 3-4 team of all time.” Seriously? You’re giving that tag to a team who just replaced their starting QB because he sucked so much?
They’re arguably not even the best 3-4 team in this year’s NFL.
Both the Colts and Saints are great teams. Both are loads of fun to watch. I hope they meet in the Superbowl. Caring over who the media think is better now, or even who random people on the internet think is better, just seems pointless to me.

This was an exercise
in how the media and public perception function, not necessarily a call for justice or even a validation of such perception. And as far as being the greatest 3-4 team ever is obvious hyperbole, my point is that they are much better than their record suggests.

I like the analysis too
but I smell a commercial banker used to picking apart startup Internet business plans that are half hype and half reality-based. Perhaps that’s my bias.
Anyway, I too, thought the 49ers reference to being a great 3-4 team (the 2009 incarnation? really?) was off-target.
The rest, though, I liked. You left out the fact that when Manning has his worst day, there are no picks and 374 yards, but when Brees has an off day, the picks are flying and they need the D to score to bail him out. While that might support the “best team” argument, it undermines the Brees for MVP argument.
Let ’em slug it out in the playoffs. Call it the New Orleans Bowl. Or maybe Peyton vs Brett in the Future HOFer Bowl—they would have a lot of interesting sidelines as well….

Excellent analysis.
Who voted for Saints? I’m coming after you!
One area where I would give the Saints a slight edge, that you didn’t mention is, their home field advantage. There is no where louder right now than that dome. Watching the game the other night made me miss the RCA Dome.
Even though our stadium is awesome to say the least, it’s not as loud.
Everyone who’s going to the game on Sunday, should yell as loud as you can when we host Houston. That’s my plan.

than the RCA Dome, but it can still get really loud in there, especially with the roof closed.

Very nice read!
I’d just give our offense a slight advantage over the Saints, actually our QB. Peyton protects the ball better than Brees. Brees has 6 interceptions and 6 fumbles, 3 of which have been lost. And 1 that I watched being taken into the endzone on MNF. Peyton has 4 interceptions and 1 fumble which was recovered.
I like Brees and I think he’s very good. He reminds me of a 2002-2004 Peyton right now actually.
But Peyton gets the nod for now. And I agree – it isn’t homerism if you’re right! lol

Manning > Brees
Thomas/Bell/Bush/the Saints offensive line > Addai/Brown/our offensive line
Brees probably has deeper capable receivers with Gonzo out, although he doesn’t have the #1 WR like Wayne. Colston’s great, but he’s not Reggie Wayne.
With the importance of the QB in todays NFL, I give us the narrow edge on offense thanks to Peyton but really, they’re both great.

Not what he said at all.
Here’s the article link.
To re-emphasize it, destroying bad teams is a much better indicator of playoff success than barely beating good teams. The logic behind the stat is that when you barely beat good teams, the fact that you beat them is mostly based on luck. People underestimate how much of football is based on pure chance. However, when you destroy bad teams, you leave no doubt who the better team is. A couple unlucky breaks aren’t going to change the outcome of the game.
By the way, even though you were joking, don’t use the BCS in support for really any argument. It’s completely full of crap based on usually wrong opinions, but that’s a topic for another thread.

I've been saying the exact same things for weeks!!!!!
Now, before I get started….. I said the Giants would beat down on the Saints and I was wrong. The Giants simply have not shown up to the last 2 games they’ve played and got smacked around badly. Having said that….
People are saying the Saints have played better competition? In that particular case, they could be right. This season has seen several teams do a 180 in the standings….but think about this…
The Colts have beaten the defending AFC East, AFC South, NFC West, and the soon to be current NFC West Champions already this year in their first 7 games. The Saints? 1 division winner from last year, the Jets.
The Saints gave up 27 pts to the Detroit Lions, and allowed a guy who had 0 career starts in the NFL put up almost 400 yards on the defense in a loss for the Eagles in Kevin Kolb. If you let some kid who’s never started an NFL game drop almost 400 yards on you, that’s not good. People forget that the Saints beat the Eagles without Donovan McNabb in the game.
The Saints have given up almost as many points in their last 3 games as the Colts have all year. That’s crazy.
And for the comments about quality competition the Saints have faced….
Detroit – starting a rookie QB
Eagles – startings a backup QB (Pro Bowl McNabb injured)
Buffalo – Trent Edwards (need I say more?)
Jets – starting a rookie QB (who accounted for the 14pt difference in the loss)
Giants – simply put, they got beat down by the Saints
Dolphins – playing Chad Henne (Pennington lost for the year)
Falcons – Saints simply beat them
So really, you have 2 quality teams (Falcons/Eagles) and the rest are simply teams that were simply not that great. Only one of those teams even had a Pro Bowl QB start the game…
Now let’s compare the Colts competition…
Jax – Played tough as always, couldn’t convert the 3rd downs
Mia – Pennington was sharp, Wildcat ran buckwild, but Peyton was God
Ari – Warner got steamrolled by Freeney and Mathis
Sea – Missing Hasselback and it showed
Ten – Couldn’t run, couldn’t catch, and they lost big
Stl – Bulger couldnt make the plays
SF – Played well, but again, our defense came thru..
The Colts played 4 different Pro Bowl QB’s and a 5th who easily could have made the Pro Bowl 2 years ago in Garrard. I think that speaks volumes. Beating rookie QB’s or bench QB’s is alot easier than playing top notch quality ones…

The Colts played 4 different Pro Bowl QB’s and a 5th who easily could have made the Pro Bowl 2 years ago in Garrard.
The QBs:
Garrard
Pennington (Pro Bowl)
Warner (Pro Bowl)
Seneca Wallace
Kerry Collins (Pro Bowl)
Bulger (Pro Bowl? Five Years Ago)
Alex Smith
You tell me.

You want to examine the QB's...
Saints
Mark Sanchez, Matt Stafford, Trent Edwards, Kevin Kolb, Chad Henne
Eli Manning, Matt Ryan
Colts
Alex Smith, Seneca Wallace
David Garrard, Chad Pennington, Kurt Warner, Kerry Collins, Marc Bulger
Which group of guys would you rather face??? I doubt you’ll choose the Colts schedule…
by DevilsReject on Nov 6, 2009 10:00 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Assuming we are talking about the QBs this year and how they are performing now (not their history), I would much rather take the Colts.
Sanchez and Stafford are both rookies, but they’ve both actually looked good, Stafford in particular (plays on a horrible team, but it’s hard to ignore his talents). Kolb became the first QB to go for 300+ yards in his first two games (or something like that) and Chad Henne has looked good since starting.
Go past the names and the QBs (which, btw, is just one position on a team with many) that the Saints have faced are equal, it not better.
7
by Rishi on Nov 6, 2009 10:04 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
You obviously missed
the point. The Saints beat two QB’s in Stafford and Sanchez who are nowhere NEAR as good as Collins or Bulger. You cannot compare two QB’s who have complete mastery of their offense versus rookies who can’t even utilize the entire playbook.
Bulger, when healthy, has been one of the better QB’s in the league. The last 2 years in particular his team has been horrendous, and he’s taken a beating. This is the guy who essentially took Kurt Warner’s job away from him.
And Collins??? He may not be the best QB, but the guy has alot more skills than people give him credit for. This is a guy who can still throw the ball deep, still has a good arm, and is a very efficient QB in this league. You should check out some of his stats, because an 1-6 record is not his fault entirely. His receivers lead the league in dropped passes.
by DevilsReject on Nov 6, 2009 9:53 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess you could say the QBs are better...
…but then you could point at the teams surrounding them. Jets team is far superior to the Rams team and the Lions and Titans were a push at that time. It would be more fair to say that neither team has faced any strong out of division competition, but they continue to win and that’s all that matter.
I would agree that the Colts are better than the Saints, but to be perfectly honest, neither schedule would be a reason to support that statement (nor would either be something to brag about).

Besides the fact that you don’t really know English…
I can’t believe anybody semi-knowledgeable about football would say that the whole Colts team consists of Peyton Manning, and it doesn’t really matter at all that he’s from New Orleans, he’s not a Saint. Have you ever heard… of Reggie Wayne? Or Joseph Addai? Or Dwight Freeney or Robert Mathis? Or any of the Colts wide receivers that are stepping up amazingly well in the absence of Anthony Gonzalez? For that matter, do you know who Anthony Gonzalez is?
I could easily say the same thing about Drew Brees but, oh wait, I actually know the NFL, so I know who Pierre Thomas, Mike Bell, and Marques Colston are. Get out of your little Saints-Only world before you try to comment on other teams.
I actually voted for the Saints in that poll because I think they have more depth than the Colts. I think their wins against a tougher schedule have been more impressive and I would be scared as hell to play them in the Super Bowl… but your reasoning is stupid.
You can’t say that teams like the Dolphins and the Jets get beat just because the Saints beat them… have you ever considered that maybe, just maybe, you beat them, and other teams beat them, because they’re not all that good? It’s great that you beat the Giants, in case you missed it, so did the next three teams they played. Sorry, the Panthers are ranked #9 in defense in the NFL, and give up the 10th most PPG. Go learn something about the NFL and then come back and give some good reasons the Saints are better than the Colts.

Drew Brees the best QB in the NFL and Darren Sharper defensive player of the year at the halfway mark. Ill take the NO RBs over the colts, OL? peyton wished he had an OL like NO . Def ill take NO, more TOs and scores. any team that scores like NO is going to give up more points.
Why is NO Off better then the colts, simply NO have put up alot more points than the colts againts much better teams.
Only thing i see here is a bunch of colts fans in a pissy mood because this year when you name the best QBs Brees usually heads the list among NFL fans.
you guys will lose this week than come here and whine some more.

I'll take Freeney for DPOY.
He is playing on a different level this year, and that’s saying something.
Now a proud annoyance on Stampede Blue, 18to88, Indy Football Report, and Phil B's blog.
Man, I need a life...
Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: This is my dad's favorite scene from one of my all-time favorite shows. Full of win, IMO.

I'd say...
…it’s a push between them. Darren Sharper is doing things that he shouldn’t, at his age, in the secondary. It’s also just scary what’s Freeney’s been doing this year, and he’s been doing it with little to no recognition. I’d gladly have both of them on the Pats.

And as for the guy who predicted the giants to beat NO. #You must have listened to all that espn hype about how good the giants were while they were beating up on those weak teams…kinda like Indy is doing. The giants have been garbage since the cheddar bob incident. Ive known they they sucked since then because i do watch football.

It's really not a bad prediction
The Giants have had one of the league’s best defenses for the past 3-4 years….and the Saints had played who exactly up to that point??? Lions, Eagles sans McNabb, Bills, and Jets….only the Jets were a serious game as the loss of McNabb changed the scope of the Saints/Eagles game….
The worst part? The Saints defense gave up like 700 yards offense to both the Lions and Eagles, and Brees didnt score a single TD in the Bills/Jets game… so naturally it’s a good pick to choose the Giants who can run the ball and play smash mouth defense. Unfortunately, the Giants didn’t come to play and the Saints smacked them in the mouth for the TKO by halftime….
Oh, you can also squash that the Saints have played tougher teams crapola too….
Saints & Colts both face the following grouping of teams
AFC EAST
NFC WEST
The Colts and Saints both play in fairly similar divisions as far as standings…
Colts 8-0
Texans 5-4
Jags 4-4
Titans 2-6
Saints 8-0
Falcons 5-3
Panthers 3-5
Bucs 1-7
And the 2 last games for each team??? Saints had the Lions and have the Cowboys. Colts have the Denver Broncos and the Baltimore Ravens up still to play…. so at the end of the day… I’m going to say the Colts schedule OVERALL is still far more difficult, not to mention the NFC is still the junior conference….
