Marlin Jackson done for season

As zkmavz pointed out in a comments section, Marlin Jackson is out for the season with torn knee ligaments.

http://twitter.com/Adam_Schefter/status/5461973147

Crappity crap crap crap. Next man up and all that. I'm about ready for our depth to stop being tested. I know Marlin hadn't done a lot this year, but this hurts. It seems like the entire defense is banged up or out for the season. Can we have another bye, please?

hey!

the good news is this should make resigning him easy! No one tears two ACLs in back to back years, puts up almost no production, and then gets a huge FA contract.

In a totally unrelated story, beer and alcohol sales in ontario have gone up by 825%.

by SpazMo on Nov 5, 2009 6:01 PM EST reply actions

Maybe...

Or they may let him walk and rely on Powers/Lacey. I think it definitely increases the chances that Bethea will be re-signed.

he didn't participate in Thursday Practice according to Colts.com's report

well im guessing it happened at the beginning of one of the practices

and they just listed him as DNP. They are saying it happened in practice, I doubt they’d lie about it, since if he DIDNT hurt it in NFL related activities they would get out of paying him.

No Shit Sherlock

The report said it was on the last play of Wednesday’s practice! The Colts report he didnt participate in either Wednesday or Thursday practice.

I guess its just disappointing because Marlin is such a great guy.

Marlin's career over?

I wonder if this injury, when coupled with the previous one and his relegation to a nickel role in his few games this season suggests that his time with the Colts may be over… I hope not. ACL tears is gay.

by LikeButtah on Nov 5, 2009 6:21 PM EST reply actions

Doubt his career is over, but don’t think the Colts will resign him. Think that ship sailed when they gave Hayden that huge contract. Hayden, Powers, and Lacey for the forseeable future.

Damn Dude

I would echo those sentiments

if it were Hayden. Marlin had very little impact at all this year, and although this is extremely unfortunate, it is not earth shaking. The team’s been without him all year and lacey and powers have been fantastic. I wish him well and hope he recovers fully for next season (whoever he ends up with although I would love to see him back in Indy), but this shouldn’t surprise anyone. Next man up. Or, in this case, same man up (powers or lacey, whoever).

they will probably both get time cause hayden is still iffy to be playing with the knee issue

I don’t see how anyone can be shocked to hear another Colts player is hurt or is done for the season. I’m numb to this kind of crap anymore.

It’s too bad for Jackson, but his career is far from over. He’ll get the surgery and be ready to go again next season, most likely with another team mind you.

I did this a few times at that dump of a site I used to write for so I figured, hell, why not try it out over at Stampede Blue you know? At least this time someone will actually be reading it.

no way

I think this greatly increases his chances of being a Colt next year.

If he was healthy and played more this year, there’d be no way they re-signed him. Now he’ll be cheap and no other teams will be interested.

by willyduer on Nov 5, 2009 6:42 PM EST up reply actions

That makes absolutely no sense. Why would you waste the money and roster space on a guy recovering from his second consecutive reconstructive knee surgery when Powers will easily win the starting job and Lacey will be a good-great nickelback? The Colts could just as easily draft someone who won’t have to go through rehab just to be able to practice during the summer.

They won’t re-sign him and they shouldn’t.

Because he’s a former Colts player? I don’t know. He’s still young and can recover from the injuries, but my point is Powers and Lacey have proven to be players we need on the field and aren’t a liability.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: Viz Media (The creators of my absolute favorite show of all-time and inspiration to my avatar, Naruto) just announced a partnership with the channel Disney XD to bring the English-dubbed episodes of Naruto Shippuden (The continuation of the Naruto series) to that station with a new episode airing each week, starting, well, NOW. With the series recording I just put on it, this is one of the greatest days I've had in a long time. I'm not kidding. I love the show that much.

by Cassieper on Nov 5, 2009 9:10 PM EST up reply actions

I'll take that bet

Marlin, who knows our system and plays very well inside it, who is versatile enough to play safety in an emergency and defends the run FAR better than any other corner, who plays the nickel better than any other corner, will basically be free next year. Because of his injuries, he’s not going to command a premium on the open market.

This guy was going to get paid somewhere else for sure before this, so it’s not as if the Colts aren’t prepared for life without him. But if he’s going to essentially be free, there’s absolutely no reason NOT to sign him. They can PUP him for the first six weeks of next year and if they don’t need him, cut him. There’s no downside. Wouldn’t you rather have him next year than Jennings?

Lacey has been a great find but you’re overrating him. He’s still a small rookie and he’s going to get exploited if he becomes an every down player.

I agree with Willy

and disagree with KR below. The reasoning is this:
1) Nobody else will sign him
2) quality vet depth (I assume he’ll compete for the job but probably be a B/U)
3) short term contract (1-2 yrs) for not much above vet min (see #1 above) so he can prove himself and maybe get a better contract elsewhere when it’s done
4) Our DBs drop like flies—he’d be insurance in case lacey/powers/hayden get hurt or…
…wait for it…
… he’d the the lightning rod—we sign him to ensure he DOES get hurt again thereby protecting our starters from getting hurt. It’s like hiking with a slow buddy through bear country in the fall—just rub some honey on his back and you know you’re safe.

i was getting the impresssion that this was his last year in Colts blue anyway. but now the sad side of that is i doubt anyone else will sign him. and we’ll probably have to sign another corner. Lacey

I like Marlin a lot, but he isn’t the greatest cover corner in the world. Lacey is getting better and better every week and is the future for this team anyway IMO. If Hayden can stay healthy, I really like our DB situation right now. Jennings is still a solid backup at nickel and at least this frees up a spot to sign either another DB for depth/ST or make a move at a position that needs more attention – RG or RT.

I don't comment on IndyStar.com articles

either. They are the least intelligent commenters ever. I don’t even read those things.

18to88 is my favorite fan blog ever. Here is a link to it. It has great, quality analysis of all things Colts. DZ (the main operator of the site) is one of the most intelligent and articulate Colts fans I’ve ever known. He also has a very measured writing style, unlike our head blogger here. Kind of the anti-BBS. Do yourself a favor and check it out. You’ll be glad you did.

Phil B’s blog is a blog written by IndyStar beat writer Phillip B. Wilson. He does the more traditional “once a day” style blogs. He’s a great place to go for solid info, especially when he can subtly give you hints about stuff he’s not supposed to explicitly say. He’s also a great guy. Here’s the link to his blog. Once again, I highly recommend him.

On the other hand, how can you have never heard of 18to88 or Phil B’s blog? I basically advertise them in my sig in every comment I made since joining the site. I was hoping people would see those sites in my sig and check them out. Makes me sad……

Peter is still going off of

2007/2007 knowledge. He apparently hasn’t updated his brain to 2009 yet. 2009 is where Powers entered and forever broke the 3rd round curse.

Does Peter

reaize that Marlin, when healthy, was our nickelback, and corner is probably the most flexible position in our system. Case in point: after the super bowl win, we replaced both of them, and went 13-3.

Lacey, Powers and Jennings should be able to cover for him. This might also lead to more Bullitt in nickel situations.

Honestly, as long as Freeney, Mathis and Bethea stay healthy, our pass D will be fine.

The defense ...

will still find ways to help win a game. They did in 2006-2007 so they can certainly do it in 2009-2010.

Best to Jackson for a healthy recovery and hopefully some more years on a roster … somewhere. That interception at the end of the AFC championship game is one I will always remember.

Don't put Gonzo on IR yet.

Remember Clark in 2006. Too early right now.

As for the extra roster spot, I expect someone to be signed up from the practice squad. No one available really looks enticing. As the saying goes, they’re on the street for a reason.

Ty Law

Would probably be Peyton’s favorite receiver.

"It's the greatest job in the world until Peyton comes off the field and you think his thumb might be broken and there's three minutes left in the AFC Championship Game and you're down by three to New England and you haven't taken a snap all year. Yeah, it's a great job until that point." - Jim Sorgi

Ricky Manning

He was the MVP in Super Bowl XLI, right?

Sorry, can’t see his name out thinking of that.

I kinda liked Sam Madison. Don’t know if he fits, though, and he is probably too old too.

Awww, Jeez, I'm gonna catch hell for this, but

Some Adam “Pacman” Jones anybody?

75% as a returner, 25% as DB depth.

Deltha O’Neal and Surtain had good careers, but I didn’t know they were still “active.” Doesn’t Surtain go back to the days of Marino in Miami? What’s he, like 36?

I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.

here's a little info on him
Analysis

Positives: Broad-shouldered athlete with room for additional mass. Good first step to get to the second level and can hit the moving target. Very good hand placement and upper body strength to latch on and sustain blocks. At least an adequate initial pop at the line of scrimmage. Good upper, core and lower strength to absorb the bull rush, earn a stalemate and push the defender back. Protected a bit in this offense, but shows at least adequate lateral quickness and balance in pass protection. High effort player who was voted a team captain as a senior despite zero career starts entering the year. Ascending player with good overall technique.

Negatives: Only one season as a starter. Lacks true explosiveness off the snap. Sometimes gives up a step before his strength takes over. Better getting to the second level than on third-and-short situations. Lacks the elite agility to recover if beaten by quickness initially. Flanked by a great deal of talent, including Greene, that may have hid some of his deficiencies.

INJURY WATCH

2007: Missed season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his knee during spring practices.

Bob Sanders does not play Hide-and-Seek, He plays HIDE and PRAY-HE-DOES-NOT FIND-YOU!

looks like a risk with the post injury to the acl and mcl. but besides that seems to have potential

he was signed by the bucs and then picked up by the falcons when bucs released him so there is another mystery there but one that could be explained by depth mabye

this one is real legit. That Iowa line had at least 3 other pro prospects on it. Guard Seth Olsen who was drafted last year, LT Bulaga who will likely be an early 1st round pick when he comes out, and RT Calloway who will probably go somewhere in the first few rounds.

starting two rookies

does anyone else here find that defending andre johnson this week with a rookie might be a difficult task. sure they have played well this year so far that being (lacey and powers) but lets be serious. Johnson is easily in the top three wr’s in the afc. our pass rush better reach schaub in time or we might have a problem on our hands this week.

by rcalvert1979 on Nov 6, 2009 12:08 AM EST reply actions

i would say def. if it was buy himself but they will def. put a saftey up top

but still it wont be easy he is a very good WR. so he will get his yards but we just got to limit it and make sure not to allow the big gain. i think with the pass rush and the D we will play against andre johnson it wont be as big a problem as we think as long as they do there job defending

Does it matter?

Can anyone cover that guy? We’re going to put a safety over the top all day no matter who is on him and hope our pass rush gets there before AJ abuses the DBs too badly.

Goddamnit Marlin. Now we have to either hope that Hayden can suddenly get healthy or start praying that Tim Jennings can cover Wes Welker.
