Saturday College Football- Open Thread

Since both Dallas Clark and Bob Sanders played at Iowa, and since the Colts seem to have such a cushy relationship with Kirk Ferentz, they get the pic for today's college football thread. Just for my two cents, if Iowa and Florida are the last remaining unbeatens in the country, they MUST play in the championship game. The BCS and college football's "league" in general are a joke, but what would make the joke a tragic one is to pit Florida against some one loss SEC team for the championship.

Could you imagine

THe NFL having such a stupid system…….where a bunch of people vote who they think are the two best teams at the end of the year? So, yes, the BCS is a joke. Some sort of a playoff is the only fair way to determine a champ.

How much? lol

Unfortunately, I won’t be around for the early games today. Got to play with the band in the last game of theHS football season. We’re playing our crosstown rivals whose only win last season was 53-0…………………………… against us. Root against Iowa for me! ;-)

It’s been a good year sports-wise for me, with both the Hawkeyes and the Colts unbeaten thus far (let’s not talk about the Cubs, ok?).

Also, Oehser caught this quote from Josh Thomas:

I listened to a tidbit of it today

It was pretty solid. Basically saying what most of us know. Losing Sanders, Jackson, and Hagler for the season all in one week, and at the same time finding out Hayden and Gonzo will be out until December is an injury news overload of epic proportions. Yet, since Sanders played two games, and limited at that, while Jackson virtually lost his starting position to Powers before the season, and Wheeler was supposed to start over Hagler anyway, this is nothing to run for the razors about. We will be playing basically with the same team we’ve been playing with all year. The one significant change is Hagler to Wheeler, which I think will be a smooth transition. Gonzo being injured was terrible, but his recovery time has helped this team in the long run by developing Garcon and Collie. The big wigs at ESPN and others may have been speculating gloom and doom, but if they actually knew what was going on, they would realize we would just be fielding the same team we had been. We will hurt at depth, now, but this won’t affect anything. Next man up is the Colts system.

And even though I love Bob and defended him rigorously against BBS’s other posts, John Muccigross (or whatever his name is) is an idiot for referring to him as our “Peyton Manning” on defense. That is absurdly stupid. Peyton Manning has never missed a game, whereas Bob has never played more than half a season other than once (his DMVP yr). We lose Manning, we obviously should accept that the season is done. Not at all the case with Bob, who has more than quality backup in Bullitt, who is not as flashy or athletic, but he does everything right and nothing wrong. It’s a step down, but a small one. Schlereth was the guy defending us, saying as long as Freeney and Mathis are there on D and Peyton is on O, this shouldn’t be too much a concern for us due to our young very capable backups in the secondary who are now experienced enough to carry the load.

The BCS

makes college football pretty much irrelevant. If the NFL had this, the Giants would never have won a super bowl, nor the Steelers, nor us. In the NFL it’s about competition and the best teams. In college, it’s about how much money the sponsors can make. That’s why they wouldn’t dare let Utah play Florida last year. Too much money lost, even though they were better than Oklahoma (no offense to any OK fans, I’m a huge Bradford fan).

If Iowa goes undefeated, they should go, no questions asked, but what if Cincinnati goes unbeaten? I know the Big East is a joke of a BCS football conference this year, sort of like the SEC in bball last year, but Brian Kelly may be the best coach in the nation, and I wouldn’t put it past him to give Florida, or whoever, a big time fight. Three undefeated teams, though? Someone will get screwed. That is what the BCS is all about. Ask Tommy Tuberville.

PS, didn’t Iowa lose their starting RB, who was a stud? That may kill their BCS chances if they lose. If their was a tourney, they may be able to adjust and make it without him, but this is the BCS.

by npb1985 on Nov 7, 2009 11:33 AM EST reply actions

Actually,

Yeah.

It’s starting to look pretty bad for Iowa.

I said to myself, “Self, we have come from behind to win every game except for one. Don’t worry.”

Then myself answered, “Yeah, but we had our starting QB in those games.”

So I said, “Hey, Mr. Negativity! Stanzi threw how many interceptions last week against Indiana and we still won?”

And I replied, “Yeah, but we paid off the refs, remember?”

Then I said, “Did you see that ‘high hit’ call?”

Arguing with yourself is only the second level of insanity. Losing an argument with yourself is the third level. All I have left is the fourth level: not speaking to myself.

I'm not sure about the rest of the game,

but on that final drive, they could have called illegal contact/pass interference/holding on the defense on nearly every play. The refs were clearly on one of those “Let the kids play” missives on the final drive. It happens sometimes, and it honestly stinks when you see it happen.
