Five Things I Think I Know: Week 9 Edition
Well it seems a few people have beaten me tot he punch with their own little "5 things" segment, but no matter, here are my five useless observations of the day that was.
1.) I think the Colts defense has played magnificent throughout this season. It is because of them that the Colts were able to stave off the Texans and the Niners. The added aggression by Coyer and the play of the young players has helped tremendously with the number of injuries in the secondary. Despite that, however, the Colts need Hayden back because, at times, there were a few lapses in coverage, which is expected when you are playing with two rookies.
2.) I think I know where the problems on offense lye. The offensive line is the problem and while it has been better than last years unit, its still slowing this offense down. Pass protection isn't much of a problem, but it is a bit of a concern with the lapses they have had the last two weeks. Run blocking is the big one as the Colts still arent trying to pound the rock frequently. Manning threw 50 passes today and thats not winning football. The colts must find a way to create balance and that starts up front
3.) I think worrying about the Colts coverage units on special teams is a thing of the past. Before, Jacoby Jones might have returned several of the punts he got today with the former special teams units of the Colts. Now its one of the last things on my mind and I dont have to hold my breath every time they kickoff or punt.
4.) I think next weeks game between the Pats and Colts is going to be big. Well this is kind of obvious, but both teams are on a streak right now and Brady looks back to form. Hopefully, the Colts can get some bodies back this week because they are going to need all the help they can get.
5.) I think Caldwell had his worst day of coaching today. I never saw how he coached when he was at wake forest, perhaps Caldwell had worse, but today certainly was up there with any coaching blunders he may have had in the past. That WR pass was just awful as we were moving the ball well with Manning having the ball in his hands. Icing the kicker only helped Houston get points on the board. Not going for it on 4th and 1 from almost midfield was a mistake as well.

Agree on
all 5, specially #5
Caldwell still needs more experience and he’s going to correct those issues as time goes by.

im not goiing to repeat all of what i said twice on the other two ill just say
you can obviously go look but basically i think brown is key to our offense returning to form. especially when it comes to play in the red zone so as i believe he will be back next week i think we will do better
GO COLTS!!! 09 IS OURS!!!

Totally agree on the running game
Balance is the key. The Colts dont need to come out and get 150 yards a game on the ground to make things work. They just need to have that option when its a couple of yards to go………
I really dont understand why they arent running more draw plays. Everyone is playing the pass 90% of the time. Maybe the coaches should go back to the Colts’ defense of the last few years so they can see how a draw play kills the pass rush.

Agreed on all except...
- - I think Coach Caldwell did a magnificent job overall, especially with the challenge on the fumble at the goal line (props to the guys upstairs for having him throw the flag). Here is the thing, that WR pass from Reggie was a good play and the mistake was on 87, not on Coach…I am sure that on a HB or WR Pass, they are told that if the other receiver is not wide open, throw the ball away. This is something that Reggie did not do, as he tried to force it into coverage (very good coverage I might add). IF this play had worked, everyone would have been praising the Colts coaching staff for being more aggressive and using trickery. I know they have Peyton Manning, but hey, why not make teams respect the other options as well..
As for going for it on 4th & 1…same thing, they make it, they are great, they fail, and they suck for taking the risk. Did we really want to give Houston that short of field? Their offense was moving it on us almost at will in the second half. So lets say the Colts went for it, didn’t convert and the Texans drive and get a field goal (they would need like 20-25 yards to be in field goal range), well then that kick by Kris Brown potentially becomes a game-winner as opposed to a game-tying field (given that all the occurrences remain the same in-between those 2 series of events).
I liked the choices…however, we need some guys back if we are going to win on this next stretch…but hey, a W over the Texans was big.

If you're going to criticize Caldwell in this game,
you have to also mention the awesome job he did with the challenge that basically won the game for them. ESPN has an article about it.
I’m not so sure that Caldwell was icing the kicker. He put a return man under the goalpost after the time out. It could be they had the wrong personnel on the field. You could blame Caldwell for that as well, and that’s fair. But there was no way for anyone to know whether Kris Brown was going to miss that kick. If he had made the first and missed the second Caldwell would be a genius today. I don’t think that play says much about Caldwell’s coaching at all. It was just bad luck.
Even if he did do it to ice the kicker, we should also note that he learned from his “mistake” because he didn’t call timeout to ice him at the end of the game.
As far as the other points, I agree with Z.Pain above. Overall, not much to criticize Caldwell for in this game. He looks to me like one of the best coaches in the league.

WR pass
I think that was Tom Moore’s call because he’s the OC. It is true that it was a horrible call.

Unless it works
If it works, then he’s a ballsy genius. I hated that play too and I thought it came at exactly the wrong time but I would rather see a trick play fail than have an OC who is too scared to do anything but lean on Peyton.
We bitch and moan about how the Colts need more balance to open things up for Peyton, but all we can ever come up with is “TEH O-LINE NEEDS BETTER RUN BLOCKING!!!11” Too bad our O-line is weak on run blocking and we’re not getting a new one any time soon.
We have great pass blocking and outstanding receivers. Why not try to mix up our passing game a little? Obviously Peyton is by far the best passer on the team and having anyone else throw the ball is risky but at least Moore is trying to make something happen. He’s got to use the tools at his disposal.
If it makes the Pats think twice about blitzing all over Peyton next week then I’m for it.
Never approach a vast undertaking with a half-vast plan.

Anyone think
that Reggie was trying to throw it away and just got off a bad pass? The ball was wobbling badly as it left his hand, and it looked somewhat destined for the sideline. He had to throw it across his body on the run, and if he didn’t have much experience doing that with big defenders breathing down his neck, maybe it was just a bad throw.
How can you not love a team that does this?

I love Reggie
But it was just a bad (no, make that, horrible) throw!

what do you expect he's a WR not a QB
Oh no!

I just read some quotes from John O.
Reggie did say he was trying to throw it away. He said next time he’d aim for the blonde in the front row. lol While that’s funny, I hope he doesn’t have to.

I think missing Gonzo has started to show
in the last few games especially on 3rd downs or in the redzone. garcon hasnt had much luck catching the football, although he caught 4 out of 6 yesterday, and has been shakey at best. collie couldnt get his hands on the ball much yesterday but when he did he caught it except for a very good play by the defense. missing a sure handed receiver has the offense forcing some plays on big downs.

i agree
Gonzo was one of our best redzone receivers last year. When he returns i think that will help the offense in that area. He has the most 3rd down catches last year if i am correct.

I strongly disagree about the coaching.
One thing to add about things to like, the twelfth man factor yesterday. That crowd was electric. I was there, and I’m telling you, it was crazy. I’ve never heard that stadium, that loud. Awesome to be there.

Almost all coaches try to ice the kicker before they kick
I wish they would stop. How often does it really work?

I think it only worked on Vanderjagt

My five
1. I agree about Caldwell being wrong on the WR pass. However, ALL coaches try to ice the kicker. Sure it never works, but everyone does it. Caldwell is growing too. I like him!
2. DROPPED BALLS! What is going on?
3. I love Addai! I always will! But I love Addai-Brown even more and I hope Brown can play against the Pats.
4. I love to watch this defense play. For once, they are exciting. We need a big game from our rookie CBs next week!
5. I felt bad for Wayne after that HORRIBLE pass. He knew it was horrible. You could see him after the throw, going through the motions of a throw. I bet he was thinking “I threw that like a girl.” Wayne is the best WR in the NFL – let’s keep him at WR!

Setting them up
I wonder how much of the HB/WR passing plays are just to give the opponents more stuff to prep for? And to set them up for a flea flicker?
It’s a run! Every body get Addai! No, it’s a HB pass, cover everyone within about 20 yards! No, it’s a flea-flicker and Garcon is now open 40 yards downfield! Shit!
I dunno, that kind of feint, feint, strike! always worked well for me in wrestling and now when I coach 7 year-old football. The Pats might be better than 7 year-olds, though….
I hate Joe Namath. That's how long I've been a Colts fan.
