Week 9: MNF open thread
Broncos-Steelers, two likely AFC contenders. Personally I'll be rooting for the Steelers to give the Colts a 2 game lead on the rest of the AFC, and because Smire-Time Hines Wald and HARF HARF Ben are two of my all time favorite characters in any medium.
Even more interesting is the battle for the leagues drunkest, beardedest, quarterback in the league.

Here's a Brown update:
8:26 [Comment From Raskell Raskell]
You think Donald Brown will play this week? I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the offense has been less explosive since he went out…
8:28 Phil B:
I would hope so. I’ve been saying the Colts have been cautious with Brown the last two weeks, kind of a timely sitdown, too, for a guy they are concerned about in terms of hitting the rookie wall. But he’s had two weeks off, I think he should be ready to go. Caldwell said today that Brown had improved. I expect Brown to play this week or it means the injury is worse than everyone has let on. Which, yeah, I know, would come as no great shock given how much (or little) we are told about injuries.

yeah, that's why the trait is so common in Africans and their recent descendants.
it’s normally not a good trait to have (see the story on Clark about nearly dying after playing in Denver) and if you get two copies of the gene (1/4 chance if both parents are carriers) then you have massive health issues.
However, Malaria is a parasite that infects red bloodcells, but they can’t use sickle cells to reproduce so carriers of the trait are immune. Making it a solid tradeoff in areas where lots of people are killed by the parasite.

To be specific, it confers a resistance and higher survivability.
In fact, people with sickle cell trait can and do catch malaria. Not all erythrocytes end up having the defective hemoglobin that is the heart of the sickle cell trait, so the malaria protozoan can infect and survive in those cells. But, the lower numbers of available “safe” cells means that it’s a less than perfect environment for malaria to survive in, so there’s a lessed ability to just reproduce unchecked.
In addition, I’m reading something saying that when the defective hemoglobin reacts in the absence of oxygen and “sickles” the erythrocyte, the act of the hemoglobin molecules also ends up disrupting the membrane of other elements within the cell, which would include the malaria protozoan too. I never heard or read of that before today, so I don’t know if that’s right. But the ultimate thing is that sickle cell trait and open sickle cell anemia gives a measurable survival advantage across a population; whether a given individual survives depends on how many RBCs are produced that express the defective hemoglobin.
End of derail.

Computer support, but my undergraduate minor was biology
So I recalled some basic elements of how sickle cell trait affects malaria infections. I wanted to refresh my memory, which is where I got that “I never read that before” info I put up above (which I’d dearly love to bounce off a professor for accuracy… wonder if I can dig one up. Again, I’m not sure that’s accurate or not).
Oddly enough, most of my online goofing off takes place on a couple of science and pseudoscience-busting forums. And I’m shocked at how many football fans there are amongst all the geeks; I know one astronomy/space science teacher and one geologic surveyor online (and it’s a she to boot!) who’re Pats fans, and love to give me grief. It’s funny. :) Another fan is an SF guy who just kept saying he was hoping the Niners would keep it within 3 touchdowns! He got more than he ever thought out of that game.

Yeah, I saw that.
It’s nuts just how varied survival strategies are in nature. It’s also funny how some of them supposedly work; part of me agrees with the authors in thinking how some of those must be completely ineffective. But, well, nature is unforgiving in that regard, so there has to be some survival advantage in those acts, odd and ineffective as they seem to us.
